Storm signals were ordered ur yester day by the War Department and ves sel were cautioned not to go South on a.vouui of the report! cyclone off the coast of Florida. Karly in tin? day tel egrams were received at the Signal Office. from (ieneral Ilazen, ordering up signals for Smith ville and Fort Mrt on. Iatcr in the day other telegrams were received slating that the cyclone which had centered off the Northern cttast ot Florida, was moving with re newed vigor in a Northeasterly direc tion, which would bring the storm up on us. We telephoned the Sound last otglit ami the only iniormauon we could recievc was that tho wind was very strong, and that the seas were running very high. Notwithstand ing the'taot that it has been raining all lay. and a portion of the time in tor rents, we hear of but slight damages in this city, nor have wc heard reports of damages in Smithville. The amonnt of rainfall here up to 3 o'clock yester day was three inches, and at 11 o'clock, last night, when the report was taken at the Signal Office, the rainfall regis tered 4.30 inches. Host lynne. Miss Ada Gray will appear at the Opera House to-morrow evening in her version of East Lynne. Of her the New York News says : The performance of the dual role of iAidy Isabel and Madame Vine, in the well-known play, "East Lynne," by Miss Ada Gray, at this theatre, has never been equalled by soy of the great actresses whose names are inseparably linked with the part. The piece, as played by Miss Laura Keene, Miss Lu cille Western and others, is Quite fa miliar to theatre-goers. Miss Gray has reconstructed the play, changing it in many respects from the version acted by the ladies above cited, yet adhering ofosely to the story of the novel upon which the drama is founded. In its present form the story is more clearly presented and much more effective. From the first entrance of Miss Gray upon the stage she is in entire rapport with the audience. In the earlier scenes she gives some very appropriate and delicate dashes of comedy with a naivete that is delightful, and is always very highly appreciated, as evidenced by bursts of laughter and loud applause. In her moments of jealousy, in the scenes with her husband, the transitions from doubt and suspicion to trusting confidence are charmingly and most naturally depicted. The discovery of her husband's perfidy, as she supposes, is given with a force, though not bois terous either in tone or manner, that is startling. In the scene of her part ing with -Sir Francis Levison, and her interview with I Ayr d Mount Severn, she is admirable, her portrayal of re morse and resignation being most touching and tearful. Her outburst of feeling at meeting with her little son and her agony at his death are given with a power and pathos that never fail to touch the heart, the audience being af fected to tears by the realism of the sorrowful scene. He death is a picture full of sadness, the curtain falling amid the convulsive sobs of those whose pent-up feelings at last give way. Such W me power oi imso uiaj a ocuu6. Whether judged by the smiles, tears and applause of the audience, or by the cold rules of criticism. Miss Gray stands pre-eminently the greatest ex ponent of the heroine of "East Lynne" now on the stage. Her costumes are marvels of good taste arid beauty, and are shown to excellent advantage on nor grandly magnificent figure. Tho play is MeUacfieaMtt parts, aid is well mrrteflp tneTt belhg7 Wvlfral new scenes. The components of Or. The cotton was disco ved on fire as the train pulled in from Charlotte, and is supposed to have been caused by spontaneous com bustion. The cotton was shipped by J. E. Sanford, Greenville, S. C, to Hall & Co., Boston, Mass.. Nearly all of it was destroyed. Charlotte Journal: Freights are so heavy now on the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta road that all the regular trains are double sectioned, besides many extras. Last Sunday a week ago Mr Watt Henderson, who lives near the old fair grounds, missed a small dog he owned, and heard nothing more of it until Monday, when a neighbor, named Mr Bloom, brought it home in a most emaciated condition. He had found the dog in a dry mining pit near the Rudisell mine, having been attract ed thither by the barking of the dog. It had been in the hole about eight days without a bite to eat or a drop o f water to drink. News and Observer: Cotton receipts yesterday 310 bales. Father Ober- ly, of the Church of the Sacred Heart, is very sick with fever, After pay ment of all expenses, the ladies of the Eden ton Street Methodist church made $124.20 from the lecture of Dr. Chas. F. Deems. Yesterday morning Major John Gat ling arrived in the city from the North, and in an hour or two started for Utley's. On the way his horess, which were spirited animals, were frightened at the breaking of the buggy and ran away at the corner of Person and Jones streets, throwing him out and inflicting slight wounds on the face and head. Major Gatling kept right on and filled his engagement at Utley's. The go-head town of Winston has had another fire, as we learn from a gentleman fust from that place. Foy's livery and sale stable was totally destroyed by the devouring ele ment on Sunday evening about 6:30 o'clock. The origin ot the fire is un known. All of the stock and vehicles were saved with the exception of his best phaeton and carriage. Insurance very small. An attempi was also made to burn the building in which tbe Win ston Ijeader is located. A negro boy set fire to a box of waste paper in the passage and then made his escape. Whether this aiaooucai ueeu was an effort to destroy the Ijeader or plunder the stores is not known. I ho authori ties are on the track of tbe perpetrator. Charlotte Observer: McAden's fac tory, at Lowell, will be illuminated with the electric light before the end of the week, the contractor having com menced putting in the lighting appa ratus last Friday. The factory hands have organized a fire company and Mr. McAden has ordered a fine steam fire engine for their use. Through a rtleman from Lincoln ton we learn of suicide, in that plate last Saturday, of Caleb Hobbs, from an extraordinary cause grief over the death of his mule. Thcmule died Friday and Caleb con cluding that life was henceforth a bur den to him, and that he could not live without his mule, , got some whiskey and laudanum, mixed them and drank the fatal dose. Col. W. It. Myers, president of the Atlantic, Tennessee, $ Ohio Railroad, on Saturday paid out $12,500, on the debt of the company. At the time the road was leased to the Chtrlotte, Columbia & Augusta Rail road Company, about a year ago, a floating debt of some $12,000 was out standing, which has all been paid off, and the payment on Saturday was on the mortgage-debt. Under the lease the company riaries . $2M00 per annum for ninety nine years, and is at no ex pense whatever beyond a small salary of thepndent, which officer must be continued to keep up an official exist ence.
