O. & II.- 1$. II. R., tho last spike in which was driven on the i22d ult. Capt. II. M. Dranc and Col. Henry S. Haines aro both from this section,, 'as is well known. Wc copy that portion of the account relative to the completion of the road which refers to our former fellow townsmen: i On Friday, the 22d inst., at 4 F. M., the last spike was driven at Rowlands Bluff, which completes another link in the great and most important line of railroads that penetrates our prosper ous and growing State. For Live Oak aud Suwannee county this will prove the greatest boom of the age, attracting immigrants to new and happy' homes, and developing our vasC resources. But wc have not sufficient time and space in this issue to make an extended no tice of this new road or the country through which it passes. Fir t, and appropriately,' would wo hasten to give the meed of merit and praise to those who have managed and conducted this enterprise to its success ful termination, with a degree of accu racy, rafidity and vigor that is surpris ing in the result, and gives undoubted evidence of high and superior business qualifications. , " , The general management and super vision has been in tho hands of Capt. II. M. Dranc who as Agent for the Plant Investment Company, tho con tractors, and special assistant to gener al managers 4f the S. Eight years ol cloe observathm in the service and employ of the Company managed ,by Col. Iiobcsonian: We are deeply pained to announce the death of Mr. J. W. Floyd, a talented and promising young lawyer, which occurred at the residence of I Mr. J. B. Pitman, in this town, last Monday afternoon, of typho-malarial fever, after a lingering illness of several w.eeks. He had been a resident of this town about two years, and for about eight months city editor of this paper. Durham Plant: XV. J. Evans hand ed us a boll of cotton a few days sines that contained thirteen locks of fine ootton. Wc have the authority of Donald W. Bain, Esq., the chief clerk of the Treasury department, for the statement that Sheriff Blacknall, of our county, is regarded at the Treasury as one of the best and most business-like Sheriffs in the State. . He was one of tho first to settle his taxes with the State, and settled every cent due. Farmer and Mechanic: With much regret we learn that Mr. Wm. H. Hood, of Eagle Rock, suffered the am putation of his hand last w-eck in conse quence of catching it in the saw of a cotton gin. while "feeding." From Dr.W. A. B. Richardson, of Eagle Rock, Wake county, wc learn that not only are cotton-pickers wanted in that re gion (25 or 30, at the least), but also house-carpenters, masons, etc. Me chanics and laborers are in demand in nearly all parts of the State. . Asheville Citizen: Mr. Parker, of this place, is getting out a patent for a new coffee pot which simplified the pro cess of clearing amazingly. We have seen it, without having tested it. But the principle is so simple, an! yet so sound, that we are sure it will ye a suo CCS3. The Glen Ingliss corn allud ed to in our last issue did not have all its merits pointed out. Mr. W. L. Pen land, who has charge of Mr. Kimmell s farm now known as Glen Ingliss, says that ho not only improved tho corn, but succeeded in increasing the rows in the ear from eight to ten. The average length is from 12 to 1G inches. It is cer tainly a very superior stock corn, and matures easily. Charlotte Jonriutl : A horse ran away with MrGus Alexander, Sunday, about 4 miles south of tho city, and in passing under the limb of a tree he was knocked trom the saddle and re mained unconscious for fhalf an hour. Hi3 injuries are not serious, however. As Mr John P Hunter, resident four miles from town on tho Statesville road was rcmrning home from the city Saturday night, a burly negro sprang from the woods, and getting in front of the mules which Mr Hunter drove, at tempted to stop them, at tho same time ordering Mr Hunter to, halt, which he didn't do. but produced a small parlor rifle, whioh frightened the would-be highwayman away. Mrlunter could, however, sco him in tho moonlight fol lowing tho wagon at a stance for a mile or so. An old gentleman named Patrick Donnell, of Raleigh, was found in a deplorable condition j,n College street Saturday nighi. Ho was taken in charge by the police.' and on Sunday morning ho inquired for his money. Ho was told that he had none upon his person when found, whereup on ho exhibited frantic evidences of distress, and said he had had one hun dred and seven ty-fivc dollars. He could give no account of how he had lost it nor how he came into the condition in which ho was found. From the fact that his face was badly scratched, and other circumstances, the police are con vinced that the old man was probably drugged and robbed, 1 !
