The Board of County Commissioners have concluded, after all, tnat it will be best to have a regularly commissioned CoVoncr fr the county, even though the term will be a very short one, and so, at a called meeting held yesterday, Mr. A. II. lieslie-was elected to the vacant position. MrJ Leslie manied Coroner Hewlett's daughter and has on sundry occasions served for him and he is well qualified for the duties of the position. 1 Improvements. ( Mr. F. A. Schutte has recently made many improvements to his restaurant on South Front street. Tho dining rooms have been removed to the second floor, in tho front of the building, and arc neat and comfortable, with a good outlook, while the rear of the first, floor in vhk:h the restaurant was recently located is being fitted up as a billiard room and will be supplied with two tables, one pool table and one billiard tabic. Juvenile Circus. The "Grand Southern Circus," a combination of artistic stars, ranging in age from ten to fourteen years, will give a performance next Saturday af teruoon at 3 o'clock, on North F'ront street, between Mulberry and Walnut. There will bo horseback riding, hurdle jumping, and acrobatic feats, the whole to wind up with a minstrel show. Ad mission to the circus five cents, and to the minstrel matinee three cents. No charge for reserved seats. I i Mr. Pitts' Resignation. i At a meeting of the Vestry of St. John's Church, held on Wednesday evening. Rev. Thos. D. Pitts, the Rec tor, tendered his resignation, to take ef fect Dec. 1st. Mr. Pits is impelled to this course by the advice of eminent physicians who have recommended a more southerly climate for Mrs. Pitts, who has been in delicate health. Mr. Pitts will probably go to Florida. His removal from amongj us Will bo a source of great ' regret, not only as regards his own congregation, but to tho many of other denominations who have enjoyed his acquaintance. Powers, gives a fairly good idea of the great essayist's conversational powers. In "Some Authenticated Ghost-Stories," by Rev. Robt. Wilson, the reader will find more novelty than usually belongs to narratives of this kind. The fiction of ! this numoer includes a long instalment of "Fairy Gold." a quiet but charmingly written story entitled "Not as tho Romans Do, and one or" two lively sketches. Tho poetry is above the usual level, and the 'Monthly Gossip" contains several no ticeable papers, among them an ac count of Gounod's "Redemption" and a description of Webster's old homo at Marshfield and the family burial-place. Mr. James Hicks, truckman .for Messrs Adrian & Vollers. was taken very faint and sick while at the W. ,C. & A. R. R. depot with his truck, on Wednesday afternoon. He fell and was unconscious for a time. A physi cian was summoned and he was con veyed to his homo and yesterday, we arc glad to hear, he was better. I The Revival. , Tho interest manifested in the revival of religion now in progress at FiflH Street M. E. Church is as intense as ever and there are no signs of an abate ment as yet. The good work goes steadily on. There was the usual large attendance last evening. There were fifteen mourners at j the altar and four conversions were announced. In all there have been sixty-two conversions since the revival began. We can, without hesitation, say that Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup has given the best satisfaction. Before Justice Gardner yesterday George Sanders, a white seaman, was charged with assault and battery on the person of Lizzie Wiggins, colored. He was found guilty and fined one penny and the costs. The same defendant was also ar raigned on a peace warrant sued out by Lizzie Wiggins. He was ordered to pay the costs and to give a bond of $50 rto keep the peace until tlie first Monday in January next, failing .in which he .was committed to jail. Florence Williams was arraigned be fore Justice Milli3 charged with assault and battery on Fanny McDonald. She was found guilty bnt judgment was suspended on payment of costs. j Before the same magistrate Fanny Md Donald was arraigned for assault and battery on Florence Williamsl She was adjudged guilty but judgment was suspended on payment of the costs. The State Fair. Wednesday 'sNewsand Observer gives a full report of the opening of the State Fair on the day previous. Gov, Jar vis made the opening address and declared the Fair duly opened. We clip some points of interest from the News and Observer: Great quantities of machinery came in yesterday, and the large machinery shed was filled to running over. The Display of steam engines and wagons is notably large. I There are two dozen entries of cotton bales for prizes, and a prominent grow er of the staple remarked yesterday that they never have been approached by any fairi A dozen counties are competitors. m ... The ladies who have charge of their special departments, up stairs, in the octagon, say that it has never been equalled, The working model of a light house, placed in the centre of the east wing of tho main exhibition hall, should be seen by every visitor. It is made by Mr. W. H. Lyon, keeper of, the North River light house, being a model of the John W. Perry, ot Chatham, exhib its a tempting display of fraits, among which are over 100 varieties of apples and 15 of pears, grown at his orchards at Lee wood. Superb walnut furniture, made of North Carolina walnut, is shown by Capt. W. H. Morris, of this city. H.Colquitt, of Georgia, will not be at the fair. , .. , Comments on the high quality and merit of the exhibition are to be heard on all sides. It is conceded to be in these respects the best ever made here, and of course, ever in the State. i Yesterday a large number of entries of horses and cattle were made. It 1 is noticeable that many of the exhibitors have never shown stock at previous taira. Judges of fine horses and cattle are loud in their praises of the exhibit.
