Martens, the d river, to be quite' lame on Friday morning, hut was worked all day on the streets, and yesterday morning on being taken out of the stalls to again go on the s:rects to work, was so lame that he was carried to Mr. D. Quinlivan for treatment, who after a careful examina tion found a uail embedded in his foot. The nail was drawn and the proper remedies applied, and at last accounts the horse was considered much better. He is a valuable animal and would be quite a loss to the city should his wound prove fatal. Ielicatbrv Services. W'c are requested ty state that the dedicatory exercises of St. Luke's A. M. K. When he closed on Friday night hc left the carcasses of two hogs hanging up in his store, and during the night some one having an especial liking for pork and pork hams in par ticular, had gained an entrance by re moving a plank and opening the win dow, and had cut one of the hams from the better hog of the two, aud departed, leaving everything else untouclied and unharmed It was evidently a case of conscience that could stretch to a ham, but found it impossible to "go tUe w hole hog." The State Fair. From all accounts this last was1 about the best since the war. The number of people in attendance on Thursday was immense. The exhibition of farming implements and machinery was splcu did and excelled any former exhibition in that line at Raleigh. The meetings during the week of the annu tl session ofthe Fruit Growers' Association and P - j-a I - the State Agricultural :cieiy were very interesting. The address of Mr. B. VV. Four Lives Saved. Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup relieved four of my .children of a most alarming attack of V hooping Cough, from which their throats and necks became so swollen as to prevent them from 8 wal lowing. Nothing would give them even temporary relief until this Syrup was tried. One bottle, in one night, saved their lives, I verily believe. GEO. W.EARHART. Captain xf Police, Baltimore, Md.
