The art reception given Friday night by Mrs. Parsley's drawing class was an crcnt of such novel interest that it rcmed to deserve fuller notice than the mcro mention of a "local'1 paragraph. It also affords an opportunity for put ting in a plea for art which is irresisti- ble. v;i...: i 1 i i i her commercial pursuits, is net always rMlv vr,.i BV.nn..h..A o.,.- iment for the cultivation of the floe arts and has allowed many of her sister cities to get far ahead of her in that re- spect. Drawing and painting, musie and Ber sistr song, and even literary movements nave always languished here, as in an uncongenial atmosphere, and but for thc occasional efforts of a few enthusiastic individuals to awaken interest for some special occasion, she would know nothing of her treasures of native talent. And yet these occasions have demonstrated the fact that there arc gifted souls in our midst, their tal ents lying idle, waiting, it may be, for the electric sparks of encouragement and opportunity to rouse to action and perhaps some day to shed the lus- ffrt Sf A ,r--v.lJ vvrlAi funin ,,kvm m r ww 1 : old town. But ought this state ol things be al lowed to continue? .Should we not rather, as a community, heartily co operate with every such effort as Mrs. Parsley is now making in behalf of her own especial department ef art? Beginning with the suggestion to her pupils to arrange their work for the in spection of their parents and friends, the idea developed into a proposition to extend an invitation to other artists and stud2nts in the city to contribute from their studies and portfolios and so an exhibit on a larger scale be made. A very general assent was given and the result, under the artistic management of Mrs. Parsley, assisted by Mr. Henry Latimer, was such a display of ait work in its various branches as de lighted and astonished all who received cards of admission. Thc reception was r.UJ IiiiU.;!! ley's residence. Thc walls were liter ally covered with drawings and paint ings, sketches and studies. Decorative I art was largely represented in all the varied ways to which thc progress of :esthetic culture has applied it. Paint ed china, ornamented plaques, artistic ! needlework, decorated mirrors, &c., j &c, covered the tables and adorned the mantels. Here were pen and ink drawings by thc venerable Mrs. Kennedy in her 83rd year and there the ' small beginnings" from thc pencils of thc Kindergarten. Ancient "samplers1 quaint and : stiff, neat and elaborate showed i how thc mothers of a century ago would sacrifice the play-time ol thcir "8 years old" daughters at the altar et diligence and contrasted pleasingly with a little group of "studies from na ture'1 done in the rc.-.rcation hours of little Phila Caldcr. A crayon portrait, enlarged from a photograph, was con tributed by Miss Bessie Willard's friends. Thc young lady bcins auibi-! tious to excel is still pursuing her cd to our readers this evening on the oc studics at tho Cooper Institute, X. Y. ! casion of thc appearance here of Cal- ! She had also a arctty picture of a child iu water colors aud some beautiful specimens of china and pottery painting, j Thc collection of china sent by Mrs. Russell was also very exquisite. An exceedingly delicate painting, "Xo. 1, Gem, Cumming's Battery," by Miss Rankin, was much admired, as were also a few pieces of china decorated' by I the same lady. A bunch of arbutus iu oils on aa ebony plaque was sent anonymously by one who "did not pro fess to bo an artist." Perhaps the mys tnrv around it enhanced its beauty for certainly attracted much attention ! nfl was hiirhlv praised. f r Poiason's works had the merit - m without thn hln Oi UC I II ilU'-UlJ .uwv. mm m r of instruction, aud were so full of good points that one could not help wishing thc opportunity were afforded him of ! cultivating such decided talent. The most striking objects in the room were unquestionably those con tributed by Mr. I jttimer, the artist, par excellence, of Wilmington. Two oil paintings. "The Castle of Chillon" frem a study made on the spot, and "Wild Flowers," also from nature, were very beautiful. Mr L. sent also a superb water color by Kiesel "At Play." The perfect finish in erery detail of this ad mirable picture could not fail to be re marked, and the three paintings with Mr. L's lovely cast of the Venus de xl, , a , iiArtion of rare beauty feast upon with profit. A group of etchings, gifta to Mrs. Parsley by her friend and teacher, Mr. Falconer, of Brooklyn, X. Y, received much admiration. As to the work of the class it would seem invidious to discriminate or to commend the few where all hare done so well. They are. for the most part. mere beginners, or school ijirls who have but little time as yet lo devote to their beloved art. But we may bo ' paraonco ior mcntionmi; a for mentioning a lew ofjr ! the morc advanced pupils I works are more pretentious whose I in size : consp;cuuus upon ! thc walls" Miss Katie Jonnson s "Crry t'' rested still on the easel wnerc u nan just oeen nmsneu, ano me young artist must have been gratified at the praise lavished upon it. Miss Lossie Myers had several large pieces "A HorsVs Head," "Whittington,1 and Raphael's Holy Family, all in crayon, evinced talent which, industri ously cultivated will elevate her to a high rauk among amateurs. Miss Georgic Atkinson showed a collection of very spirited studies in water-color, and some fine pencil sketches. Miss Louise DeRosset's studies from nature were excellent, and her "Little Foxes1' deserved praise for its careful finish. But we must close and with a notice of little Keith Calder's group of studies; one needs not the prophetic gift to point out this talented little fellow as the probable artist ol the future. On the whole, it has rarely been our lot to spend an evening of more profit able enjoyment. The Committee of Reception, distinguished by their pretty and appropriate badges, did the honors gracefully and it was pleasant to see constant evidences ol that" enthusiastic love for their art which is so frequently found among the lowly followers in the footsteps of the immortal masters. It was rumored that a " Students1 Art League1' would probably be the result of this "day ol small things," and indeed we hope that some steps may be taken to render permanent the good movement now begun, and are sure thatVe express the universal sentiment when "we beg Mrs. Parsley to -accept mi t- fVnriL-a IV. ..:.-.. ruih t.h Kll n motion. We would also assure her of sympathy and support in all that she may undertake for the development of talent, for thc cultivation of the beauti ful, and for the benefit of art.
