Bills -were introduced as followes:
Mr Whitford, to establish a standard
weight for a barrel of pork; by the
same, to remeve all license tax upon
wines, cordials or liquors : Mr Evans,
to regulate the fees of justices of the
peace.
.Mr Linnoy desired to place himself
right oa the bill for the relief of the
sheriff of Bladen, and asked that the
vote by. which it passed its final read
ing yesterday be ro-considcred. He
" did not think that relief was needed.
The vote was reconsidered, by a voto
ayea 41, nays 2. The bill was referred
to the committee on finance.
Bill for the protection of mechanics
and laborers came up on its final read
ing. It provides that no property shall
be exempt from a lien for werk done
uoon it bv anv laborer or artisan:

Bill to amend the charter of the At
lantic Coast Railway, passed its final
reading. . .
JJill to punish the crime oi poisoning,
by making it ielony and a penitentiary
offense, punishable by imprisonment
for not less than four . ruoptb.3 or more
than ten years. ;
For the bill was offered a substitute
by the committee, which also contained
a provision that any person convicted
oi an assault with a deadly weapon
with intent to kill, shall be punished by
fine or imprisonment in the discretion
of the court, or imprisonment in the
lcnitentiary not exceeding ten years .
. Mr. Lianey's amendment was adoj t
ed. The substitute as offered by the
iudiciary committee was adopted. The
bill passed its second and third read-

the following resolution, and it was
adopted under suspension of the rules :
Whereas, It is alleged that the Sta- j

Carolina Con tral Railroad Company,
-by reason? of its having purchase! a
majority of the stock of the latter com
pany, and whereas there are -grave'
doubts whether the aid Seaboard &
Roanoke Railroad Company has any
authority, under its charier or under
the laws of the State, to purchaMJ aud
hold said stock, and whereas it ought
to be the policy of tho State to encour
age competition in railroad traffic and
to . prevent the gvovAh of "monopoly
power, and especially to prevent the su
bordination of Stato raiiroads by other
corporations having their termini i
other States and run in the interest of
foreign cities, therefore
- Resolved, That the Attorney General
is instructed to examine into the mat
ters herein referred to. and if in his
opinion thero is reasonable ground Isr
bringing an action to test in the proper
courts the rights.of the said Seaboard
& Rpanoke Railrpad Company to hold
stock, and to assert tho rights of the
State in the premises. '

The Chairman- explained the object of
the meeting to be "to take, into 'consid
eration the bill before the present Leg
islature allowing the county authorities
of Pender county to issue; coupon bonds
to the amount of $1,200, being in addi
tion to $10,000 already- allowed, for the
purpose of building a court house and
jail." After a general interchange Of
sentiment and a fair discussion, the
following resolu' ions were adopted with
out one dissenting- vote: i j .
Resolved, by the tax-payers of Co
lumbia township (without regard to
party), in meeting assembled, that we
are emphatically opposed to the bill be
fore our pretext: Legislature, allowing
the county authoriiies of Pender to
