A Hat Full of Molasses.'
A robbery committed andcr peculiar
aud ludicrous circumstances was yester
day evening' explained to theCcntral
O fiico authorities. - The story told by
the friends of the Yictinr is that on Fri
day afternooa a rwell dressed strauger
entered the grocery store at the corner
of West ,,EleTenih and -Washington
streets, and asked J ohn H. Yon Dohlcn,
the proprietor, who was then behind
the counter, to change a tea dollar bill.
The groceryman took a roll of- bills
from his pocket and gave his visitor
two five dollar bills. There was in all
about $300 in the bundle of greenbacks
which Von Dohlen foolishly displayed.
. A short time afterward two young
men neatly dressed walked into the
store. They appeared quite merry and
laughed loudly. One of them said to
Yon Dohlen that they had made a
rather odd bet and wanted him to settle
it. . Yon Dohlcn asked the nature of the
bat, whereupon he was loli that thev
desired tm know which of their hats
would hld the most molasses. The
grpcerjman laughed, fcut when one of
the strangers gave him his hat and said
he would pay for the -mlassses used
Yon Dahlen began filling it with the
syrnp. When tbo hat had been filled
to the brim Yon Dohlen gave it back to
the stranger. A second after one of
the men grabbled the storekeeper about
the arms, while his comrade placed the
hat filled with" molasses on his head.
They then rifled his pockets and re
lieved him of his. roll ot greenbacks.
After securing the money the men ran
out of the store, and Von Dohlen, al
though nearly smothered; started in
pursuit, but after running sevtral blocks
S we up the chase. As the trick is new
uie police are anxious to" discover the
ingenious young men. Y. X. Jleratd.

" Lieut. Philip F. Powell, ol-the Ninth
