means that the bill has been finally

caprice of tho legig-lative body but in
this we are sometimes mistaken It is
not only in the interost of the people
but at their express request that this
legislation was desired. The petition

of a refusal to sign. Petitions were also
sent forward from other points, ail in

The body of Mr. Asa A. Packer, son
o the late Judge Asa Packer, and Presi
dent of the Iehigh Valley R. R.. passed
through this city night before j last, en
route for his home in Pennsylvania.
The body was met here by a special car
in which it was conveyed the balance
of the way. -Mr. Packer died of: con
sumption and had gone to Florida
hoping for relief. He was a very
prominent Democrat and' always gave
liberally of his very extensive means to
aid the party in Pennsylvania. ! In ad
dition to other resources the income ot
his share ot his father's estate was
2.000.000 a year. Under such circum-
stance death must have been inexpres
sibly hideous.
