Magistrate's Coiirf. - Calriri Street, colored, was brought before Justice Millis today, charged with an assault and battery, on Scllars ' Pormson. also colored. He submitted and jadgement was saspended upon - payment of costs. , - "Sellars Forsusen was then arraigned, charged with an assault and battery on Calvin Street. V " Very Handsome. XTe saw this atternoon some very handsomo lettering, in old English text, done by Master Jimmy Hodrick, son or Col. Joan J, lied net. Jimmy is but 14 years old and the attempt is his first. Tho letters are nearly a foot in length, in bluo and red, on a white ground, and arc as accurately and nice ly nado aa if executed by a master in tha art, having ail been 'drawn by hand. They will be amon&tho adornments in St. Paul's Church to morrow. Iiamentablo Deatli. The sad intelligence reaches us to-day, that Mrs. Mary. Tippett, wife of Mr.. John. Tippett, formerly of Bladen - county, came to her death in a most ahocking manner by falling into the ' fire, at her home in Baxley, Ga., on Monday last. She had been subject to , attacks of vertigo for sometime past and in one of theso she fell in the flames and was so badly burneel before she could be extricated that the result was fatal, although she lingered in great agony until Thursday, the 22nd inst., when death came to her relief. Mrs. Tippett was about 02 years of age and was the daughter of Mr. Wm . Gay lor, o Bladen county. Mr. H. C Horton, of Baldwin township, has told ns of a very old and j large tree that stood near his fathers old residence. The tree was recently cut down, and Mr. Horton informs usjth: t the stump measures 6 feet 5 inches j in diameter, iraking about 19 feet in circumfcience. Eight men assisted in cutting it down with plenty of space for each to swing his axe. It took them half ! a day to fell the tree and cut tho laps witnout tonchinz tho trunk. It has afforded fire wood for a family oi two persons nearly all the winter and to-day there is a good two horse loard ! left. Tho trunk and larger limbs were! piled to gether and burned, and it was on fire a week and is still burning.
