Harrison, has been conducting a protracted meeting at . the Baptist Church in this place for the past" week. Rockingham Roclcet: A strange story comes to us from Alamance county. A subscriber writes us that a colored wo man gave birth to a child week before last, and that her brutish husband beat her unmercifully because the infant was a girl. The man's sister rehion strated with him forhiscruel treatment of his wife, and got "a blow for her pains. This occurred on Saturday, and the man was well'and stout. On Mon day night he was taken sick and died Tuesday morning. Washington Gazette: On Tuesday of last week a young man by the name of Woolard, son of Mr. A. Wbolard living six miles below town, met with a terrible accident, the particulars of whith are as follows: He was plowing in his father s lield ana his horse be came frightened and ran away, and he having the plow lines fastened or loop ed around his wrist and being unable to extricate himself, was dragged all over the field among the stubble , and m m. Dr. Nicholson was called to him, and . on Sunday had to amputate one of his arms. The doctor thinks he may re cover, Highland Enterprise: On the 28th inst. John Dehait of Swaia.who attend ed school at Y est Mills, ac'cidentally ahot himself with a pistol. The ball entered his leg just above the knee and was found lodged in the knee-cap, causing a very painful' wound, though it is hoped that no permanent injury was received. A daughter, of Mr. J. B. Bryson, living about seven rniles east of Highland?, was bitten by a al tlesnake last Saturday, while walking near a small creek through the hem lock. She was bitten just above the ankle, through two dresses and a thick stocking. The young lady is now do inz well, and is likely to recover. The snake, which was a very large one, was killed. It had fourteen rattles. Concord Register: Wheat and oats are coming out in head. The prospect for a large sield of both of these grains is very promising. We have not seen or heard of any rust on the straw of either. They will soon be out of danger from the rust. r-Tho Lutheran Synod at its session last week, decided to re vive the North Carolina College, at Alt. Pleasant. They will not change the character ot the institution, but will make it co-cducational, for the entrance of both sexes. - Dr. John L. Hen derson was prostrated with a paralytic stroke about 9 o'clock last Sunday night. We are glad to state that he has , so far recovered as to be able to walk about, and his friends hope that he will soon be restored ro health. News and Observer: Chief Justice watte will preside at the June term'of tho tcderal Court here. . The Christian church, corner Hillsboro and Dawson streets, is to be of brick. Work on it goes forward rrfpidly. It is to be completed November I. On btroday Right Rev. Theodore B.
