A joint institute lor the teachers, of Duplin and Sampson will be held at Warsaw, beginning on fhe 16th of July and continuing one or two weeks. All the teachers in the twocour.t'es are urged to attend. . Sunday last, the 21th inst., was the Festivalbf St. John the Baptist, and not yesterday, as many here have sup posed. Nor was it St. John's Day, but St. John the Baptist's Day. The fdrmer occurs on December 27th. We hear the complaint that there is a great scarcity of hooppolcs in the city, in consequene iof which our naval store men are put tc considerable inconvens ience. There would be a ready sale at good prites should a lot be brought here. i1 Unmailables. - The following is a list of the unmaii able postal matter remaining in the Postoflice in this city : Lewis Dennis, Ponce, Porto Rico; Mrs. J. ''Parade antl j Inspection, ' It is expected that the inspection of the Wilmington Light Infatry will take place at about 7 o'clock to-morrow evening, and the Company will form for that purpose at about half-past 6 o'clock. If the weather is stormy, the inspection will be in the City Hall. It is hoped that our citizens generally, and especially the ladies, will turn out and witness the parade and inspection. Steel man Bucket Co. We regret to learn that the C. M. Stedman Bucket Company is in a fair wav to be disbanded. For several months mw there has seemed to be Lut little care for ts prosperity, and the building has been allowed to remain much of the time with open doors and the property al lowed to go to ruin and waste- This should not be. It is an organization that has done faithful and efficient duty in the past, and as a valuable; aid to the protection of property, it should be kept up to the high plane upon which it once stood. We know but little of the causes which have led to this apparent demoralization of its affairs, but hop that, whatever they may be, a remedy may bo found ; and; applied, and thd company once more become an houor to our, city and fire department. Military. Inspection. Col. F. H., Cameron, Inspector Gen eral North Carolina State Gaard, who is now on a tour ot inspection ot the different military organizations in the Eastern portion ot the State, is expected to arrive in the city to-night, for the purpose of inspecting the Wilmington Light Infantry. He (will perform that duty to-morrow evening, at which time the corps will turn out in a full-dress parade for inspection. Col. Cameron has now nearly completed his tour of inspection in this section of the State. Yolande. v k Those who have been waiting for 1he publication in book form of William Black's new novel, Yolande, will be glad to know that it has at" last been issued in that shape. For some time past it has been running as a serial in Harper's Bazar, and to those who have not read regularly but have merely taken a glimpse now and then at the matter, much interest has been excited as to the appearance in book form. We thank tne Harpers, the publishers, for a bound volume of the story, received through Heinsberger's book store, of this city, of whom the work may be had. Mr. Orr's negatives are well cared for. Duplicate pictures finished at low rates. Lardner, Photo., Yates Gallery. lwtl. Disaster at Wrigutsville. There was a runaway and upset at Wrightsville Sound last night. A par ty, of some young folks were in an am bulance which was being driven along between the Seaside Hotel and Capt. Manning's place when the horses shied violently at Ihiething near the road and started off m a run. The driver lost control of them and they broke from the traces and left without stop ping to say good-bye. The ambulance was dashed down the slope and over turned in the mud and two of the par ty, a young lady and young gentlemen, were scratched and , bruised, the others escaping injury, w The party were com pelled to remain at the Sound all night and returned to the city in the wago nette this morning. A. Busy Place. We paid a short visit this morning to the extensive. trunk, harness and sad dlery establishment of Messrs McDou gall & Bowden, No. 114 North Front st., and were well pleased with what we saw. The front portion of the store is occupied as a salesroom in which all the articles in their line are exposed for sale in complete order. Next in the rear is the trimming, and still further to the rear is the wood work depart ment, while in a detached building in the yard is the blacksmithing departjs ment. Un the second noor is room for the painting and storage ot car riages. Everybody was busy and there was an air of go-ahead ilivencss about the promises which seemed to be the precursor of success. IIow Colds Are Taken. A person in good health, with fair play, says the Lancet, easily resists colds But when the - health flags a little, and liberties are takeu with the stomach or the nervous system, a chill is easily taken, and, according to the weak spot of the individual, assumes the form of a cold, or pneumonia, or it niay be jaundice. Of all causes of "cold." probably fatigue is one of the- most efficient. A jaded man coming home at night from a long day's work, a growing youth losing two hour's sleep over evening parties two or three times a week, or a young lady heavily doing the season," young children overfed and with a short allowance of sleep, are common instances of the victims oi "cold." Luxury is favorable to chill taking; very hot rooms, soft chairs, leather beds, create a sensitivensss that leans to catarrh. It is not, after aU the "cold" that is so much to be feared as the antecedent conditions that give the attack a chance of doing harm. Some of the worst "colds" happen to those who do not leave their houses or even their beds, and those who are most invulnerable are often those who, by good sleep, cold bathing and regular habits, preserve the tone of their nervous system and circulation. -1 At this writing thsre is absolutely j nothing known as to the whereabouts of the two Richmond duelists. June 20, 1883 Turkish Bath Soap. rVi July and August. . A weather prophet of some local celebrity, whose predictions.have crept into the papers but whose name is not given, and who is said to have been quite successful heretofore in his pre dictions, tells us this much about the months of July and August, which may or may or be correct. He says : The heat on the 4th and 5th of July is likely to be something phenomenal, consequent uponj the conjunction and parallel declination of the sun and Jupi ter at that part of the ecliptic where it is cut by the solstitial colure in the early degrees of Cancer. It may be some consolation to the average boy bent on "having a Fourth" to learn that although that star spangled anni versary is almost sure to be hot. it will most likely be fair. On the whole, July will be a very warm month, with more than an average number of vio lent thunder showers. On the 19th occurs , the- conjunction of Mars and Saturn at- 10:19 P. M.. and on the same day. Jupiter is in conjunction with Mercury. A violent storm may be expected on that and probably the following day, with intense electrical manifestations along the and . on " the w ortn Atlantic ocean. - August will also be a hot month, with the exception ot the 0th, 12th. 24th. and 26th, about which dates stormy weath-j er is likely to prevai i . It need not ex cite surprise if the configuration of Jupi ter and Uranus, and Saturn with - Ve nus, on the 12th,should precipitate a vio lent hailstorm. Therewill be a good deal of thunder during the month, and the prospects' are that the growing crops will not suffer for want ot rain. Artistic work at' low rates lor the summer months.
