The Daily Review. JOSH. T. JAJLES, Editor Prop WILMINGTON. N. C. TUESDAY. JULY 17. 16S3 Estered at the PostoSc at Wilmington, N. C. a mcoa1Um matter. The raluatfon of Ihe real ertateof the City of New. York for the current ' jcaleachc3$l.079.I30.650;aninercase of nearly $41,000,000 over the valuation of 1S32. The increase b mainly in the wardj affectedly the derated railroad. Alabama has II iron and steel manu factories, 19 cotton factories. 13 foundry and machine ahop3, BOTflouring and Srist mills and 3SI lumber mills. The capital Invested in these industries is $3,812,224. Employment is given 6,536 hands, .who receive $ 1S9, 179 wases. ' The House of Representatives that meets la December next will be com posed of 323 members, divided politi etllraa follows: Democrat 191. Re publican 119, Readjuitcrs 6, Indepcn dents 5, Greenbackers 2. The Demo crats have a majority of 59 over the combined opposition. Ellen M. Gifiord, of Boiton, has do natcd $20,000 for a summer homo for dozs. cats and birds. -The building is now in process of completion and will bo ready for business this week. The rates will be Mvcntyfive cents per week for small doss, fifty cents for cats and thirty-five cents for bird. The State of Florida proposes to have plenty of railroads if sho has to give away two or three times as much land as she owns in order to get them. Every new company that applies gets a charter and a land grant thrown in, although the lands" already granted exceed the amount owned by the State some 6,000.- 000 acres. Glass is beginning to take the place of wood and iron in making' railroad bridges in England. The inventor makes blocks of glass, which he har dens by a special process In solidity it is said they leave nothing to bo de sired. The experiments already made giro surprising results, and the cost is below that of bridges ot wood or iron. Moreover, the glass cannot be injured by insects like wood, nor mstcd like iron. Tbeliritish House of Commons has adopted a resolution to prohibit the im portation of American .cattle by the d4l OftA U IU) It nroK'iKita the importation of cattle lrom countries in which the laws or the sanitary con dition of the cattle do not afford reason able security against the foot and mouth disease. The immediate result of this action will only be to increase the shipment of the competing article in tho form of dressed meat, and to dimin ish it in the form of live cattle. The intensity of the struggle lor livelihood in England is illustrated by the statement of a magazine writer that there are 300,000 families in Lon don who are in the habit of pawning small articles, and that more than 6, 000.000 unclaimed pledges are sold every year in that city, while over 270, 000,000 are taken in pledge in the course of the year thronghoutTtho country. O course, some of these pledges are o stolen goods, bnt the writer estimates that they do not exceed more than one in 11,000. The Chicago Board oT Underwriters has met the danger presented in the lofty buildings now becoming incrcas ingly common by a rouna addition in the rates of insurance. Beginning with a rate of eighty cents per $100 for five- story buildings and $1 for six-story buildings under eighty-five feet hib. the rates increase until for edifices between 145 to 155 feet high: they are $4 yery nearly a prohibitive rate, and at all events, making it much cheaper to build a fireproof building than to pay inurance on a combustible pile the height of a church steeple. A French paper Rives some inlorma tion about the submarine cables of the world. Nearly all tho lines under the sea have been made by English work men, bought with English money, and laid down by English engineers. Thja camtal of the three comnaniec reaching from London to countries of tho East r represents more than 31,000 miles of submarine cables. The English com panies own 13,000 miles, agaiust 10.000 miles owned by others of the cables be tween Europe and America. Not more than a tenth of the 12,000 miles of cable connecting Europe and Brazil with the West India Islands is owned outside of Great Britain. During the last three years a firm of Baltimore brokers has bought over thirty million dollars of Conlederate securities upon the orders of prominent banking houses in London. The prices paid for the bonds are $3 per thousand ; for the State war bonds $3 to $2.50 per thousand. Some days the purchases aggregate between three and four hun dred thousand. The bonds come In all shape? so in times in picture frames, on fire-boards, or with wall paper stnek to their backs. Some are excellently preserved, while others are much faded and lorn. m A great many lauies unns them to the office and dispose of them. The same firm will take as many of the securities as they can get. Negotiations sre now pending for the purchase of two millions from, one party. The in tention ol the London bankers is un doubtcdly speculation. The idea seems to be that if the States would pay so much money their credit would be es tablished. On this basis the bankers expect to realize from their now seem ingty profitless investment. It is thought that the reduction of the telegraph rate to sixpence in England will enormousjy increase the volume of telegraphic business. -The. announce ment of the proposed reduction made clerks of the postofficc department, which has'chargc also of the lelgrapb shudder; and no wonder, lor one of tho first indications of what was before them was furnished by a celebrated firm or soapmakcrs, who promptly de clared their intention of sending out 50, 000 telegrams, by 'way ( of advertise ment, on tho day that tho six-penny rate went into effect. It is. said that the use of the telegraph as an adver tising medium has become a nuisance in England, even under the) shilling rate. . PERSONAL. Gov. Wade Hampton is trout fishing in irgtnia. ' President Arthur is expected to taken a cruise along the Atlantic . coast this week. I JvdQ Thcaker. who was once Commissioner of Patents, is seriously ill at Deer Park. Da Lessens lacks only two years of belnir lour-score. Another son was born to him last week. I Bismarck is getting in additional phys- icai uimcuiues oy cuauginx uis yujsi- cians frequently. ; Ixrd Rosebery's interest in Scottish affairs is to be rewarded by giving him the freedom of the city of Ldinburgh. Dr. and Mrs. Stephen A. Tyng will celebrate their golden wedding to-mor row. Dr. Tyng 13 84 years old. The reoort that Mr.. Charles G. Krancklvn will place a Garfield memo rial window jn St. James1, Chapel, at Elberon. is denied. Mr. Robert L. Ream, father of Vin- nie Ream lloxtc, the sculptress, lias been appointed special agent of the Gen eral Iand Oflice, to accompany Com. missioncr Smyhe to Mississippi to ex amine the lands that the commissioner contends were sold by the general gov ernment, and for which he claims now, on behalf of the'State, money and land scrip as indemnity. MOONSHiit k. "How many donkeys ..have you in Austin, my little man?" asked a passen ger on tho south-bound train, protrud inz his head through the car window at the depot. "Oh, we've . got some few donkeys here in Austin, but most of them keep right on through to ban Autonio." The stranger bumped the back of bis head on the Icar window, and sank back in his I seat. Texas Sifting. i Mrs. Gabe Snodrass attended a colored ball while Gabe was absent from the city. On his return he heard ofiranda neighbor over-heard him talking to her impressively. Texas Sijl ings. i ' Scene at tho baseball ground: A ball was knocked sidewisc and caught on a fly. "Foul and out!" was the cry ot the umpire. A charming high-school Tgirl looking at the game ejaculates: "Ah really, how can it be a fowl? I don't see any feathers!" And she turned to her attendant with an inquiring look. "Well oh! Yes, you see." he stamv meretl, "the reason you don't sec the feathers. is because it belongs to' the picked nine." At a wood-cutting contest in McMean county two women won first prizes for cross-cut sawing. It is j safe to wager that the zcslnclic education 'of these women has been fearfully neglected. The probabilities are that they don't know a thing about crocheting a sky blue dog on pink canvas or pa in tine frightful things on plaques, but they may be pretty well up in the valuable accomplishment of kicking a tramp off the Ircnt stoop. nick. I , "Uncle,"' said little Ray,. "how much arc two and eight?" Ten," was the response. Exit little Ray and enter little Rex. who asks. "Uncle, bow much are five and five?" Ten," was the response.
