and he had not infrequently partaken
of it, but the Butler crow was now a
little too nauseous and be could swallow

The New Orleans Times-Democrat
'says:.' "If 'the southern States are
properly represented at Louisville in the
matter of timber and forest products,
it will be worth several millions to
them, for at the exposition these visit
ing northern lumoermen can see at a
glance what they want, and save them
selves the iatiguo, annoyance and
expense of traveling around the country
looking for timber. There is no interest,
no matter, deserving of more attention
at an exposition than timber and lum
ber. It is a display ot , the greatcs
value to the South, and will be' pro
ductive of the most important results."
the clerical delegates and the bishops
have been paid by' tho Episcopal
churcheainhis cityrasf has-been the
custom in the places where the conven
Hons have met. i It is estimated that
thi3 entertainment has cost not less
than $14,000. , The expenses of the lay
delegates, which are paid by themselves,
have been abotxt $8,000. These threce
items would make a bill! of $23,000.
which, however, js really Jess thau half
the expenses of the meeting. TraveJU
ing expenses ot the ; rriembers will
amount to" hot Jess than $40,
000. Last 1 year i they amounted
to about $7,000. Therefore, coiipting
all the extraordinary expenses1, 1 the
meeting of the convention has cost not
much less than $70,000. Otj this ex
pense Philadelphia I has ! contributed
$40,000 , and it waa therefore no sur
prise that there were few cordial invi
tations from the large cities for the
entertainment of the convention in 1886.
The Methodist General Conference,
which meets here next Spring, wiil be
somewhat larger body; It ' will meet
in Association Hail and remain in. ses
sion about six ! weeks! ! ExJ-President
Hayes, and possibly, General , Grant,
will be present as lay delegates. It is
supposed thatithc cost of the j entertain
ment of the conference and its general
expenses will amount taabout$ 100,000,
mo3t of which is provided for by the enor
moasly rioh ' Book Concern' in New
York, which has profits sufficient to
pay the salaries and expenses cl all the
bishops of the cfctarch, 1 ! , .
There will be about 600 delegates to
the conference, which will be presided
over by Bishop Si mpsou, of this city,
who, since the death of Bishop Scott, of
Delaware, has been the presiding bishop
of the church. I ! I ' i
The New York Herald recalls the fact
that in 185G more than seventy-five
per cent, of the total imports and ex
ports of the country was carried in
American vessels. In 1S82 only fifteen
and one-half per cent, was carried, and
represented the lowest point ever reach
ed. Tho figures for the fiscal year 1S83
show a slight improvement, as they give
16.2S per cent ; but this is nothing to
get elated over, and ought to be read
with a feeling of shame by every patri
otic American. Whether or not it is
the hleh tariff rings that have been
robbed of a rich carrying trade,
the United States Lhave been dependent
upon the merchant natives of other
countries. Is there any patriotism in
that? Is it an advantage toAmericans to
payXpreigners for carrying five-sixths
ot what we import?

Now York TTorta has something to tell
about the cost of the Triennial Con
vention which was recently hc.d in that
city, as well as that of the Methodist
Conference which is soon to be held
there. He says :
The; Episcopal General Convention
has been an expensive church gather
ing. There were about 200 members
of the House ot uepnue3 ana more
than sixty bishops who attended the
convention and were taken care of by
the Church in Philadelphia. The actu
al expenses of the convention for cleri
cal work, printing and other things
necessary to such a meeting were not
less than a round $6,000.

tioodrf Of oourse ererybody has to

b such a thing as prolonging life, and
also of making the most 6f it while it
lasts. -' ! " ' .
A growing child is exposed to
more risks than an adult. The sys
tem is in its formative state, and very
receptive.,: If contagious diseases are
in' the atmosphere, the child is par
ticularly exposed to them. Diseases
which will pass over a full-grown
man or woman will attack a growing
child, and often with fatal effect.
A growing child ' is liable to all
manner of accidents, j Cuts, wounds,
bruises, and casualties of various
kinds may happen at any moment.
Were it not for the natural elasticity
of children, the death-rate among the
young people would be far larger
than it is.
A grouting child is worthy of the
very best care. It shovld be guarded
against disease and accident. iTc
conquer fche diseases which attack
the digestive organs, the blood, the
kidneys, i the liver, and the nerves,
here is nothing like Brown1 s Iron
Bitters. This is the only preparation
of iron which can be given withoul
mischievous - results to teeth oi
stomach, j It vitalizes the blood,
strengthens nerves and muscles, and
oromotes sound digestion.
A growing child's future depends
much on what his condition is during
the years of growth. It is essentia
that he reach the complete adult
maturity in healthfulness and vigor.
Keeping this in view, how important
it is that parents should closely ob
serve their children's- health, and in
amole time begin . to j correct an
tendencv to weakness or decline.
The timely administering of Brown's
Iron Bitters will do wonders toward
keeoinff the crowing- child in excel
lent health. ; 9
