The Hoaso stenographer who were summarily removed by the audacious Keifer when he was in power two years ago have asked for reinstatement, and the general impression is that their ro nnt shnnld he ff ranted. They" were thoroughly qualified for their work and hold their places under both Democratic and Republican speakers. Nobody thought of their party and nobody cared until Keifer wanted tfceir places for some of his friends and relatives. Speaker Carlisle can scarcely do a more popular or just act than to restore Messrs Hayes and Devin e at the earliest possible moment. . North Carolina is well represented in the list of committees made up by Car lisle. Ot the regular committees, forty six in number, she is represented on thirteen and on oue of these there are two raerabera from this State. There:are live select committees and of these two contain Representatives from tortb Carolina, and there are two joint select committees, on one of which, that ol printing, Mr. Scales appears as Chair man of the House branch. According to the new light religion ists, the millennial age. or what .night be termed the prelude to the muien niuru, commenced in 1873 and will ter minate in 1914, after - which there will ensue a universal knowledge of the Lord ami a good ti.ne generally. Durinj; the next thirty yours, however, there will be series ol wars, revolutions "and ilisord - in the social, political and history. What particular late is to befall the Un:led States in the mean time the millennial prophets - d-v nt seem to know, excepting that we must share in the general break up as well ;s the' restitution... It-acy dependence is to be placed on these predictions, the young men of the day have a decidedly stormy outlook , and theft was more wisdom in Gen. Sherman's New York speechas translated by John Svvin ton than we have generally given the old man credit for. The opening of a new line of steam ers between New York and Mexico marks another movement of Mexico and the United Stntes into a closer commercial, relation. An English writer of an article which appeared in Fortnightly licvicio a few months ago spoke of the importance to this country of the establishment of railway that it is i'tho same as if England should suddenly 4ind a Japan or India on, her borders and separated only by tlic Tweed and an ivisible frontier line. Tho tropical products of Mexico are extremely valuable to the United States, while "the Mexican demand for our manufacturesMs rapidly increasing and may be made a hundred fold greater. , Wo import more than $70,000,00Q- oi Cuban products annually, and less than $10,000,000 of Mexican, and yet. our 'trade with Mexico ousht greatly to ex ceed that with Cuba. 'Already the hope of better means of co 114 muni cation with the United States has awakened a spirit of enterprise among the Mexicans, and every increase ot transit facilities between the two coun tries will be hailed with joy in each republic. The rapid growth of the caus? of tern psrarce in Washirg.on is noted by a correspondent of the Springfield Hepub licanl who alludes to iho fact that "the three leading candidates for Speaker formerly used stimulants, sometimes to excess," and add3 : Two of them are now total abstainers and have been for some years whiie the third only uses wine in a moderate quantity at his dinner. I can count a dozen Senators who used to tipple who have notdrunk drop in two years, and there is not a Senator with perhaps an exceptiou or two who is not prudent and most temperate in the use ' of liquor." Nearly , all of themjlo not touch anything except a light wine at dinner. It is so in the' House. It is so with most of the public men. There has grown up a sentiment that - a man is a fool who use3 liquor immoderately and that he is better off without any of it. Three years ago I saw one ot the most brilliant members of the Senate staggering drunk in front of Willard's Hotel. The other day I saw that he left his champagne untouched at a dinner. Said he. haven't touched alcohol in any form for three years. I woke up ono morning real izing that pretty much all the temper ance lecturers have said was trne, and 1 simply said to myself that I have had enough. And 1 1 have Ihavc never seen the time from that day to thi3 that I have not felt a repugnance for liquor." Garland, the learned lawyer from Arkansas, is a teetotaler.
