And this it is that puzzles mc And many wiser men. Hoslon Tabids. 1ULL AKl lractlccs-Ionic.Htic Unties. Mr3. Arp haul an uncommon good hreaklast this morning. Iherc was a dish ol baked tvgs at my plate, which sho knows I am lond of. While the houso was beinz cleaned up I noticed that the beds were not toucned. and so I told her I would help but she said no. ahn wanted them taken out on the" oiazzo to sun. and su I took cm out. and then she asked me to take out the bedsteads and tbcburcAU and the chairs anil the sewing machine and all. as She wanted to clean up a little. Cleaning upa littl is the old. old story at my house. When I trot through 1 sat down on the front niazza with mv pile to ruminate a little and rest from my ardu ous labor. IVelty fooii she brought me a broom and a raku aud a twine string, and nketl mc to tie the broom J handle nto the rake for she wanted to we?p down the cobwebs troni the walN. I ur.dertand all that, and so I tird it on and swept 'cin ail; lown my Ii'and retired lo tb piazza a usual. About the tune I had my feet stuck op on mc oanisiers, sim orougni out :i hamuter aud a paper of carpet tacks' aud laid Vm ilown oirH4ie table beside me and smiled. These movements re minded mc of the carpet that she had been threatening to put down in the big lamily room for a mouth, and if there i any household work that I do despise to do it is putting down a carpet. I can't double up and twist arouid like I used to. I jrave an involunlry groan aud a grunt or two and went to work. A Iule darkey bad aiready Drougtit up a passe, of hay from the baru, aud so we picket! it all oyer and got out all the itt e weeds and coarser pieces ana spread ic nieely upon the lloor. aud then I unrolled the carpet trom the nuudie each way ami went to work ou one side nailing: it. It had jto bo stretched and fittotl jiM around anil the cdire out on the hearth was the hardest of al'. for Mrs. Arp watched every tack and it it was a traction oi an iucii oat oi nuu sue ... i L 1 1 r i I aw tL ana l nail to k;cp ouuinz ar.u urnlnir under the cd.res. and when I was on it I coulUu t pun u ami l . ... . . . . . rotiiiln't cct olf it lor.the wall, ami so it was irct-itu and tret-down anil work side ways aud cross-ways, and -all sorts of wars, and ! I mashed my lingers and cram net I iny knees anu - L twisted off my suspender buttons, but fiuallv the work was done to her satis faction sorter, and I managed to get up aud utand up and be thankful to the Iord for his mercies. liy the time we cot ail the furniture set back agaiu and the-beds made up the day was ha'f gone and the children came home trom school and forgot to wipe their fec-t at thodcoraud the dogs followed them into the house and l hey all began to track around with their i muddy feet but they didn t track loug. Ihey are in the cautions state rizht now aud so am I I think I wiiWget some old baggiug aud put it dqivn over the carpet to as t? savo consequence I wish that wc men were as neat and careful as the women no I don't cither, for then wc wouldn't be much account out oi doors and would degenerate into dudes as they call 'em. but I wish we had more regard j lor neatness than we have Mrs. j Arp says she don't believe that I. would wash the window glass until ! couldn't see out for tbo dust and fly specks, and the dogs would sleep tiuder the bed and the spiders and lizzards would live in the closet. But she don't mean that. I know, and is jut talking after the manner of nice respectable women. But I don't sec any use in cleaning up so mu-h why it takes an hour every morning to clean up the family room for she will take everything oH of the manlel-pieco and the books off oi the shelves, and wipe off all the little clean dust that has settled around, (and the ashes must be taken ; up every morn ing and the hearth has to have a fresh coat of Spanish brown about twice a wecK and the water buckets must be j scoured, and every few days I have to take down the pictures so that she can wipe off the frames, and the leaves have to be swept out of the yards as rait as they fall. She bad her little flower garden all raked and swept mighty nice yestcrdsy, and I come run ning in her room excited and told her another leaf had blown down, and I just did have time to dodge the scissors sue throw a at me. i tout ner one uay that the Scriptures said man wts made out of dirt, and she siid that she reck oned be was but that woman wasn't. I wish I was rich 1 wish I. rich for her sake. I would build her a marble palace and fence out cfery bug and spider and fly, and bavo the walks laid witb marble aud the grouud all covered with grass and flowers and evergreens. She would get tired of it I know Un a month, and then I would sell out' and come back to the good old dirty home. Folks were not made to enjoy fine things all the timeour best 'pleasures come from contrast. We would't cn jov new things if they didn't get old and faded There is a power of comfort in having some new thing occasionally ucw cur tains, a new carpet, a uow lamp, new cioUics, new chzirs, a new sewing ma chine, or a new stove l cook on it won't do for things to last loo long. Wc get tired of 'cm. Wc get tired of seeing the furniture in the same places in a room and it is a relief to move the bed to another corner andjihe bureau to the other side. Even the land wc cul tivate wants a change ot crops and the sleek wants a change of diet. The birds and . the beasts change their haunts, churches cbangcthcir preachers and people change their rulers, and some lolks would changC3their wives, if they could. 1 don't believe in living in a house too line tor comfort, or hav ing I urn :tu re so fine the children arc alraid lo touch it. The Scriptures say that even the Sabbath was made for man and uot man for the Sabbath,, and so a house ought lo be made for man, loo, and uot man ior Iho houso. litit a woman deserves a nicer house and nicer things than a man. for she has morn refined tastes and she lias In live and stay in the house more, and can't get away from it it is her abiding place and ought not to be her prison it ought to be made as pleasant and inviting to her as possible. Beautiful pictures ought lo adorn the walls and handsome curtains windows, and the clock ought to strike with a sweet ilvcry tone, for fehe has to hear it all the day long. The trout yard ought to have a welcome shade and plenty ol ilowcrs and ever greens, and tbo piazza ought to be adorned with jessamins ; aud a good husband will provide all theso if he can that is mv creed and my ambition, and Mrs. Arp says she reckins I do the best I can considering.
