On motion of Mr. Singleton, of Miss.,
Senate bill for the construction of a lib
rary building, was taken from the
Speaker's table and referred to the com
mitte on the Library.
The House then resumed consideration
of the contested case of. Chambers vs.
Manning, but pending discussion the
House adjourned.
Mr. Caleb Dixon, a highly respected
citizen of Albright township, met with
a most horrible accident that caused his
death in three or four hours. He had
recently put op a saw-mill at his flour
mill on Tick creek near Ore Hill, and
on last Thursday was there toseoabont
starting it- Late in the afternoon,.!
everything being ready, he pulled the
rope that let in the water and in doing
so slipped and fell right in front of the
saw which cut him almost in two. Dr.
Kirk in an was at once sent for, and
rendered all the aid tha. was possible,
but no human help could avail. Mr.
Dixon remained perfectly conscious to
the last, expressed his willingness to
die, and gave several messages for his
family.
Morganton Mountaineer: Th first
train of cars crossed the Catawba River
bridge on the Chester and Lenoir Rail
road last Vcdnc3day. A large crowd
of people gathered at the bridge to wit
ness the first arrival of the iron horse
in Caldwell county. Track laying, will
now be pushed on rapidly towards Le
noir. Last Thursday morning a
sad and probably fatal accident occur
red to a laborer at Mr Aldcn's garnet
mine in the South Mountains, a few
miles from Monranton. A force of
hands was employed in taking out
"mass garnet." a coarse varfety ot gar
net which is ground up and used as a
substitute for emory. The mine is on
the face of a mountain, and the miners
hd worked into the mountain side for
some distance. The garnet boulders
are imbedded in loose earth, and. on
Thursday morning the miners were
warned ot the approaching cave by
falling earth and were leaving the shaft
when a huge boulder, weighing more

we learn that Mr II Mclsaac. of the
firm ot Mclsaau & Jones, dropped dead
at his home in this city. He was about
the streets al. the morning, apparently
well, but was taken after dinner with
congestion of the lungs and expired
instantly. He leaves a vtifc. While
the East bound freight train was at the
French Broad depot on Monday night,
and engaged in shiltin? cars, a young
colored man named Will Sevier, aeed
about 'A was caught between the
bumpers ot two cars and so crushed
that he dial in about an hour.

passenger train from Raleigh killed a
colored man by thu nauio of Hardy
Blacknill. between Macon and
Yaughan's. Blacknall was walking
toward the engine as it flew aloDg on a
straight track and must have seen it.
The engineer, Capt Ed Clark, saw him
but thought of coure that he would
leave the track in timo. Seeing that he
had no idea of doing so Capt Clark ap
pl.ed the air brakes, but could not stop
in timo and ran over the negro, breaks
ing a leg. crushing the kull and killing
him instantly. Il is supposed that
Blacknall was drunk as a bottle was
found in hi pocket which had contain
ed whikcy but was broken. Wc un
dcrstand that the coroner's jury return
ed a verdict ccnsui ing the engineer for
nezlect. Blacknall j wile, it is said,

Wadcsboro 'Times: Alice Tillman.
a young coiorcu woman aoout is years

day morning at the residence of her
grandfather, ;Frank Tillman, who re
sides near 1'oplar Hill, and about six
miles Irom this town. The electric
lluid came down tho chimney killing
Alice instantly and severely stunned

entered Alice's body through her fore
arm, it is tfupposcd, as tho skin seems
to be broken on no other portion of
her body. Her clothing was set on fire
but was extinguished by her mother
who was in tho house. Bettie TiilmanJ
was thrown from her chair into the
fireplacnd her feet were severely
burned while PaLsy seems to have been
lUQre fortunate receiving only a slight
shock. It is reported that Bvtlie is in a
very critical condition, and is sppposed
to bo dying.
