Mr. Caleb Dixon, a highly respected citizen of Albright township, met with a most horrible accident that caused his death in three or four hours. He had recently put op a saw-mill at his flour mill on Tick creek near Ore Hill, and on last Thursday was there toseoabont starting it- Late in the afternoon,.! everything being ready, he pulled the rope that let in the water and in doing so slipped and fell right in front of the saw which cut him almost in two. Dr. Kirk in an was at once sent for, and rendered all the aid tha. was possible, but no human help could avail. Mr. Dixon remained perfectly conscious to the last, expressed his willingness to die, and gave several messages for his family. Morganton Mountaineer: Th first train of cars crossed the Catawba River bridge on the Chester and Lenoir Rail road last Vcdnc3day. A large crowd of people gathered at the bridge to wit ness the first arrival of the iron horse in Caldwell county. Track laying, will now be pushed on rapidly towards Le noir. Last Thursday morning a sad and probably fatal accident occur red to a laborer at Mr Aldcn's garnet mine in the South Mountains, a few miles from Monranton. A force of hands was employed in taking out "mass garnet." a coarse varfety ot gar net which is ground up and used as a substitute for emory. The mine is on the face of a mountain, and the miners hd worked into the mountain side for some distance.
