BEGINNING THE ATTACK. The troops advanced over sand knolls and scrub for a mile iroui Fort Baker along tho Teb road, when tho tebels opened fire with their Remington rifles, but the rangn was too long and their shots proved ineffective. The rebels in swarms occupied the high ground iu fnnt and on the flanks of the British army. They retired slowly as the English advanced, keeping within about 1.200 yards of the main body of the British lorces.' Tho British cava'ry followed, covering tbe rear upon the left, formed in three lines and distaut some 900 yards Iroui the main army. At U CO o'clock the gunboat Sphinx tired four rounds from Trinkitat Harbor, but the range was too grea and the shells burst a mile short of the enemy's position. The firing was stopped, as tbe shells were dangerous to the English. The cavalry and mounted infantry advanced on tbe left towards tbe rebels, who retreated slowly, though they were not indisposed to fight. The infantry continued to advance steadily l wo or three times a nait was maue in order to aliow the sailors and artillery. who were drarging the guns, to rest Tbe square was well maintained, but where the ground was difficult the men marched by lour right in columns o companies. The road toward- Teb was studded with hundreds of corpses ot Baker P.isna's ill-starred fugitives, which filled the air with pollution and around which swarms of carrion flies lazily hovered. - ' Alter an advance of three miles had been accomplished the earthworks of the rebels came in sight. Guns wero mounted and standards were Hying in the sultry air. The rebel fire had now almost ceased except on the extremo right and left, where it still continued to be direc:ed at tbe scouts. The British stepped forth as if on a holiday parade the bagpipe playing and the High lander looting cheerily. They ad vanced till they wero within 800 yards of the rebels position, vvhero an old ugir mill was sunuliag. surrounded by a number of uative huts, and where aisj &fxxJ a fort with two guns. 'I ho shell passed wide over the quate The next two fhots wero aira ett with greater accuracy nd the shells burst close to the I British, wounding scleral. The rebels nmti.tained a rat tling lusiiace wub btuail arms, sending hundreds - o bullets which whizzed around the ears of tbe British. A mah of the Gordon Highlanders was first to fall badly wounded. As the shots increased tho ambulance surgeons were fully occupied Tbe English advanced in a square wiihout answering tbe rebel mo till they passed the north face ot the rebel works. At tins point a piece ' I shell wounded Baker Pash in the lice and twenty men were hit. After an echelon of a thousand yards a halt was ordered and tho men wero directed to tio down. I It was noon, the day was clear and (the wind dispersed the smoke of the rebel fire, disclosing the rebels1 more mcnts. The British opened fire with gnns and Martini rifles, causing (the rebel fire rapidly to slacken and almost to cease. At this the bugle sounded a fresh advance. The troops rose, wheel ed rornd on the centre of the square and approached the rebel works. The' rebels were in no military order, bat were scattered here and there, so as to take advantage of the abundant cover which the ground a Corded. They clang to their position with desperate tenacit ty. All advices from Trinkitat concur in acknowledging that tbe Arabs fought with desperate bravery, usraan uigna, the rebel leader, who gained so easy and so signal a victory over Baker Pasha upon almost the same ground where he yesterday met with decisive defeat, brought 12.000 men into the field. The most of these took part in tho charge against the British lines During the entire battle the Arabs1 want ol organization and regular discipline constantly exposed them to the deadly effect of the continuous tire which the British poured upon them hour after hour. Not more than one-fifth of Osman's forces were armed with Remington rifles. The rest were supplied with scimitars and spears But neither the Remington rifles nor the guns under the Arab's manipulation caused any loss among the British. Tbe wounds wero received at closo quarters during tbe fanatical charges or rushes upon the troops. The few prisoners taken and the sul len retroat of the enemy cause consid erable uneasiness here as to the value and results of the victory. General Graham, if he captures Tokar. will march on Oitnan's headquarters at Tamanicb unless Oiman obeys his summons and lays down his arms.
