He had long believed, and he now saw the confirmation of his be lief, that Senators on the other side ol tho Chamber were louder in professions that in acts in behalf of the colored people. He had no doubt that the Senator Irom Olro (Mr. Sherman) attached more value to the negro as an ignorant person as a fruitful source ol investigation than he would attach to an intelligent man and an intelligent voter. Io doubt he answered the pur poses of that Senator better in ignorance than with intelligence. Mr. InealU congratulated Mr. Vance on the very adroit appeal he had ad" ill cs setl to Northern sentiment on the subject. Tho census tables showed that tbe white illiteracy ol iMorth Uarolina wa 32 tier cent, hence tho 'gratuity m . would be very largely to tne whites as ell as tbe blacks. Mr. Vance denied that tuonov was nc-eded by ihc -white people for them selves. They would be able ta take care of their own education il they did not have so lanre a colored population. Mr. IngalU said that in the halcyon lays of tho old rcsimo. theie were over R000whitc3 in North Carolina who could not read or write, and that was a larger proportion of illiteracy than even the procnt. Mr. Vance said that North Carolina, a poor State. hd paid into the treasury twelve times as much money as Kansas, a rich one; North Carolina having paid in. in 18S0. Go'diboro Mcsscnycr : There has been, so our otrch;vrus inform us, quite a considerablo improvement in the trade of our city during the past week. Wc learn from the truckers of this vicinity that they will be ready to ship radishes to Northern markets about the e id of this week, which is rather earlier than usual. We hear that, with ihe exception of one little boy, the en tiro family of our fcixxl friend, Mr John Murphrey. ot Snow Hill, legether. with tho cook, were j poisoned nigh unto death by eating poisoned biscuits at supper last Wednesday night It seems that the poison known as "Uoitzh on Ra's" I y some means got into the flour and waa cooked Up with it.
