Editou Review i Some of oar citizens, feeling the necessity for and importance of a Rail road from Wilminsrton to Onslow county, propose holding a meeting in this city on Wednesday, the 28th of May. of a.1 friends to the enterprise from New Hanover, Pender and Onslow counties to sec what can bo done in that diiection. The following gentlemen have been selected to act as a committee of ar rangements for this meeting: . From New Hanover Co-4-Col. Roger Moore, Capt, Jas. B- Iluygins. Oscar Pcarsall.'Ksq. From Pender Co. Maj. C. W. Mc Clammy, J. T. Foy, Esq; P. McMillan. Esq. i i From Onslow Co. A. C. Huzgins, Esq. Bryant. Williams, Esq. W. IL King, Esq. Hail road to Sew Itiver. Editor Review :I reioico to tee some evidence that Wilmington is awakening to the necessity of establish ing c'oscr commercial relations with the people of Onslow county. Cut off from railroad facilities the latent resources of that county are not known to the world. There is, never theless, vast undeveloped wealth in the forests, the fields, the rivers and the sounds ot Onslow county. Let Wil mington act promptly then, and put forth her enenries in the construction of a railroad wbich shall be controlled inH her interest, and that of the people who will use it. The road need not be a costly one. Several years ago Col. Fremont estimated the cost of a narrow gauge railroad along the coast irom Wilming- , . . . . .. j ton into unstow county, terminating at Now River, at five thousand dollars per mile. Rails are now very nfuch cheap er than then, and the estimate of cost may be correspondingly reduced. It has always seemed to me that the sug gestion of Mr. Q. GJ Parsley, Sr., in regard to such a road and its terminus was a good one. His plan, some years ago, when the subject was undergoing discussion, was to construct the road from Wilmington along the coast to New River at a point about forty miles from the city, then to place a steamer with flats on the river, and collect the trade of the country accessible by water and the railroad, (which would include three-fourths of the county, and thati tho bc3t.part of it) at the railroad ter minus. From that point passengers and freUht would reach Wilmington in two or three hours. This would be co through line, and it would have no Northern connection, except that via Wilmington. ' With a little improve ment In the river and its tributaries, a large area of lertile territory would be opened up to the enterprising merchants ot Wilmington. Besides the trade of Onslow county such a road would develope the strip of country lying along the coast in New Hanover and Pender counties, already densely populated, and contributing largely to the retail trade of the city. I hope that the enterprising men of Wilmington will see the matter as others see it, and take steps to secure a valuable feeder to the city. Beta. Cliurcli Services To-Morrow.
