As our reade-s know, the UeqUlsr,
judging Mr. Scarborough by the re
sults accomplished since he entered
upon the discharge of thy duties ot ihe
office of Superintendent ot Public In
struction in North Carolina, is of opin
ion that he bfc proved himselt a wire,
faithful and efficient offiet-r. Th-i Rcij
islcr. however, is hnppy to know and
believe alo, ih'it, his successor will
prove equally ffioient and equally
abundant in good works
The office i3 truly a most important
one. Indeed, uponjthe manner in which
it is idled, it may almost be said, de
penus the destiny oi tlie state, and we
congratulate the State, that it has at its
service a gentleman so well qualified to
succeed, worthily so able a superinten
dent as Mr. Scarborough. . And in this
opinion the litgiste'' is by no means
alone. The very handsome vote Major
h imrer received on the lirst ballot on
Thur day, and the overwhelming one.
almost unanimous, it may be called,
he received cm the second ballot, gave
convincing proof of the esteem in winch
he was held by one ot the largest and
most intcllkent representative bodies
ever assembled in North Carolina. In
deed, nrhigher praise con Id be award
ed him than that he was thought wor
thy to succeed Mr. Scarborough.
Major Sidney Michael Finger was
born in Lincoln comity," North Caro
lina, tm May 21, 1837, and is therefore
now in the prime of life. He obtained
his preparatory education for college at
the Catawba IIih School and graduat
ed at Bowdoin College, Maine, in the
Spring of 1861 in time to make his way
through the lines and enter the Con
federate army shortly after his arrival
at home. He entered the army as a
private in. the Eleventh Regiment of
North Carolina troops and continued
in active service till 1863, when he was
appointed controlling quarter-master ot
North Carolina. which post he filled
till the close of the war. At'er th-3 war
he took charffo of Qatawa High School
with Dr. J. C. Clipp, and proved him
self to be a ripe e eholar and an excellent
disciplinarian. He continued m charge
of this school s me ci2ht years until de
clmin; hea'tli forced the adoption of a
less, sedentary -lile, after which : he
entered the mercantile business at
Newtor) and prosecuted it with success.
He represented Catawba county in"
the General Assembly of North Caro
liua in 1874-'5, and Lincoln and Cataw
ba counties in ihe Senate m 18i5 '7 and
n 1881. He was Chairman of the
Committee during all his. services in
ihe Assembly, and showed a thorough
knowledge d our common school sys
tem. He had the honor of introducing
and securing the securing the passage
of the first School Bill passed after the
Democratic party secured entire con
trol of the Government of North Caro
lina. AH thef-e posts of trust and honor he
fihed with rreat satisfaction to his con-
Maior Fintr comes therefore not
unprepared for the hijrh and important
ilntiix thai, will devolve uooll him in
January next, and the State may con
gratulate itself that the eor d work ot
promoting and advancing ihe eansc of
education will go on without, hH or hin
drance under the inc ming administra-
-But it is not qierdy because Major
Finder has proved hi.nst ff a successful
educator that we. feel s tmro he will
proye a Yuccesslul "Superintendent ot
Public Inslrnetiop, but because, as
wc'l, he has, proved himself a man i f
most excitant administia ivc and exec
utive ability. In a word, becaus of
the combination in him of ihe quality
of an excellent 'sehol mas'er with
those of a mot sucf esful man ot wf
fairs, of capital common sense, judg
ment and discretion.
Again we congratulate the Slate on
the nomination ot Major Finger to Ihe
most important office in the gift, of our
people, . '
