The Republican campaign, says the New York World, is a campaign of fraud and false pretenses. The "white plume" of "the Knight of Maine" is a fraud. Blaine's charac ter is black, his record is black. There is nothing chivalrous about him.. His humiliating appeals to Mulligan, hi famous sunstroke trick and his resig nation from the House to escape expul sion were craven acts with nothing knightly aoout them. The episode of Ben Butler is a frand and a false pretence. Under the mask of an Anti-Monopoly candidate Butler is runniDg as theHool of Blaine on a bar gain made with Bill Chandler. Butler is a money-grabber and the paid advo cate of monopolies, yet he poses as a representative of labor and Anti-Mono poly for the sole purpose of striving to cheat a sufficient number of Democrats out of thai- volts to give Blaine a plu rality in this State. Blaine's appeal to the Irish-American voters is a fraud. For two "or three years during the existence of the Know-Nothing party Blaine was a bit ter reviler of people of foreign birth, and especially of Irish Catholics, , and did his best to prevent their admission to American citizenship. When he was Secretary of State ho made no protest against the imprisonment of It ish-Americans as "suspects" in Eng land, and lha great Buffalo meeting presided over by Gov. Cleveland was held to denounce his inaction. The Republican cry of "Democratic Free Trade" is a traud and a false pre tense. Tnere is no Free Trade in the Democratic party. There are a few theoretical Free-Traders in both parties The Morrison bill, although recogniz ing Protection and having no Fiea Trade, in it, was killed by Democratic votes, first because it was a mischievous and futile agitation of the tariff, and next because a few Free Trade cranks chose to give it a bad name by claim ing it as a Free-Trade measure. The Democratic platform is outspoken in favor of a tariff that will not injure American industries, but protect and promote their healthy growth, and an attempt to justify the Morrison bill at Chicago was overwhelmingly defeated. The tout and lying personal scandal about Gov. Cleveland, set afloat through Republican agencies and circulated by lha Republican State and National Committee?, is a fraud and a false, pretense. lis authors and its circulators know it to be a lie, but in their despair of finding any truthful charge against tiie Democratic candidate they have been driven to dig down in ih mire and filth of personal slander, only to soil their own dishonest hands with ou leaving a stain on the object of theiH unmanly assault.. . The Republican professions of friend ship lor labor are fraudulent and false. Corporations and monopolies have been created by corruption and enriched while labor has become impoverishd by Republican rule. The workingmen to day know their own privations and afHiclions. They know that wages are reduced and are only kept up above a starvation .standard through the power of labor -unions; that employment is getting more and more scarce, and that thousands of willing toilers are doomed to . idleness. What au insult to their intelligence -is the assertion of Mr. B'.aino that the Republican policy for twentyfour years has been a blessed boon to labor! What a mockery o! their sufferings is his picture of the workingmaa, under paternal Republi can carc, earning enough to live in comfort, educate bis family, and put by a competency for old ageK Yes ; the Republican campaign is a campaign of iraud and fatee pretenses. But this is natural. The Blaine Repub lican party is a party of fraud and false pretenses, and that is. why it and its candidates are repudiated by honest Republicans and will be rejected by the thinking, honest people. , . Turn the rascals out! The region affected by the earthquake of Sunday afternoon appears to have been bounded by southern Maine on the north and by central Virginia on the south. The shock ws felt in near ly erery part of a belt about COO mile3 loner and 200 mile3 wide, although this width js extended midway between the ends of the belt by the reports from Ti tusville, Penn. The shock was most severe on the New Jersey coast, on the Long Island coast, and in Connecticut It is impossible to determine from the telegraphic dispatches and the state ments of observing persons the direc tion of the undalatory movement or to locate the probable centre ot impulse. Accurate records of time seem to have been made only in Boston, Cambridge. Shelter Island, New Haven and New York City. These records vary only seventy-five seconds, and they indicate if they indicate anything that the movement travelled ronr New York in a northeasterly direction. As a rule, the time recorded at places south or southwest of New York was later. The disturbance seems to have followed the coast line, although it is not plain that it was oroDasated f ram either end of the tteU'deSned. above. One man died offriffhL On the other hand, it is as serted that the shock cared a man's lame back in New Jersey, and recon ciled two families there who had been-H at loggerheads for years Several' in teresiinz eames of ooker were inter- r . rupted. . . ... . A strange spectacle for a thriving city to present is , that afforded by Wheeling, in West Virginia. The constitutional limit of indebtedness 5 Der cent, of the assessed value of tax- . , able property has been overrun, more from carelessness than anything else as it 3eeis. and all at once the municipal authorities and that they have neither money nor credit for current expenses. City orders are refused, by the banks, the receiver has borrowed small sums "on the street' until it can be done no longer, the council will not even try to find a remedy, and there is trouble generally. Police and other officers cannot be paid for several monlhs un less private, purses are opened from some new accession of faith, Before the Presidential election in November elections will be held in six States. These are Arkansas, Septem ber 1; Vermont, September 2; Maine, September &; Georgia, Oc tober, 1 and Ohio and West Virginia, October 14. The votes of Arkansas and Georgia will have little bearing on theNational election, since both o these States are strongly Democratic. The rcsults4n Maine and Vermont wil be chiefly significant as 'indicating the extent of Republican defection, as it is not likely that either will go Democrat ic. The Republicans claim, or pretend to claim, West Virginia as a doubtful State and will make desperate efforts to capture it. AUGUST ANTICS. Familiarity doe3 not always "breed contempt. For instanc?, there is the girl and ice cream. "I am a man of enter-pries." remark ed the burglar as he inserted his jimmy into the safe lock. The young man who went to the picnic with the delioerate intention of making a mash, made one. He mashed a pie. Ella Wheeler asks in a frenzy :. "Is there anything higher than a boy's am bition, that wmgeth away to the sun- riven skies?" Did Ella ever timidly inquire the price of the first strawber ries of gentle Spring?. -"If I were in California," said a young fop in company the other even ing, 'I would waylay some miner with a bag of gold, knock out his brains, gather up his gun and run." I think you would ao oetter to earner up tne brains," quietly responded a young lady. They got mad at each other on the way home from school, and as one of them turned in at her street, she called out: "Humph! Who cares for you? We are going to have the electric light in our house.; You dasn't!" "Why?" " 'Cause it woujd show the pimples on vour face!" Mothers.
