Gentlemen;' Ayer's Hair Vigor Has been used in my household for three reasons: 1st. To prevent falling out of the hair. 2d. To prevent too rapid change of color. 3d. As a dressing. It has given entire satisfaction in every Instance. Yours respectfully, V ar. Carey Ciu.se." AYEIVS HAIR VIGOR is entirely free from uncleanly, dangerous, or injurious sub stances. It prevents the hair from turning gray, restores gray hair to its original color, prevents baldness, preserves the hair and promotes its growth, cures dandruff and , all diseases of the hair and scalp, and is, at the same time, a very superior and desirable dressing. TUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1884. 8TAT13 NETVlv Wadesboro Intelligence i The Stan lsiies have held their convention. Captain D.N. Bennett was nominated t,.w tha T-naislatnre: D C. Blalock. cv.?fr. .1 W' Snuffirs. Reeistsr of Deeds; S. D. Hearn, Treasnrer. Greensboro Workman i At the Con" federate Soldiers' Reunion jesterday at Ueidsviile, 8,000 people wee estimated as present. Spaeches were made by Senator Ransom. Gen. Scales. C. B. WaUon, Esq., James W. Reid, Esq.. and others. Raleigh Visitor: The revival at In wood Baptist church, located three mile southwest of the city, closed yes terday afternoon. The revival at Macedonia Methodist church, located abttut'rive miles southwest of the city, continues with unabated interest'. There were 27 penitents at the altar yesterday afternoon. Elizabeth City Falcon: While we are talking about big yields of corn, it is well to mention that a portion of Mr. Wi'ey G. Ferebee's farm in Cam den hasof late j ears produced 22 bar rels to the acre. And a gentleman toM ns at Edenton this week that Dr. Woodley, ot Chowan, would raise this year as much as 120 bushels to the acre. Some ot this corn ftom both places Till go the' Exposition. Durham Iieporler: We were inform ed this morning that a watermelon was cut at the residence of Capt. Wm. Mangum, of this city, yesterday, and iu the centre of the melon the initials ot Mr. Mangum's name, 'W. M.." were perfectly distinct, being of a different color from the other meat, and penetrating more than an inch on each side. No traces ot marks on the out side of the melon were to be sten. How the name cot there is a mjstery. . 3 Kinston Journal: The mail on Fri day nitiht brought us two dollars irom a colored subscriber at Seven . Spr in js to renew his subscription to the Jour nal, and the news also came along that he would probably vote the Democratic ticket this year. Now, if reading the Journal has converted this voter we hae the satisfaction of knowing that it has not been done by trjing to con ceal all lhe errors of the Demrcratic party and abusing the Radicals, but by trying to teli the plain truth on both. A fair comparison between eight years of Republican rule in North Carolina and eight years of Democratic rule will not fail to convinc1 a lair minded, in telligent man that the latter has been better for the people. Hickory Press: A lively fight took place at Little's Mills, Taylorsville township, on Thursday of last week, in which Mr. Joseph Bos-ton was perhaps fa ally wounded. This difficulty wss caused by a dispute in regard to the sli ck law election which was held that dy. Mr. B. Cavort d the measure while th:re were eight others present who op p st d it, and their controversy culmina ted in a bloody fight in which knives, cubs and rocks were ust d with the ab've result. The assaulting parties resisted arrest and at last accounts they weretill at large. News and Observer special from Asbevil'e. The largest conveniion in the his'ory of the country met here to-day. The proceedings were entirely har n.onious. Richmond Pearson and Johnstone Jones were nominated for the Legislature on the first ballot. The nomination were made unanimous, amid wind enthusiasm. The nommess were chosen with fepeeial reference to their advocacy of the completion of the Spartanburg & Asheville railroad. The people of the French Broad valley are determined to have the Spartanburg Asheville railroad ; if the owners will not build it, the people will. Jurors. EpiTon Review: One may commit a crime and yet by the laws of the land he isdeemed innocent until proven guilty and no punishment for the crime can be inflicted until conviction. If the rights of the committors of crime are so guarded I Would like to ask why does not the law also protect jurors? Why ire jurymen who have violated no law or committed no icrime fre quently punished by our courts? Is is any wonder with such treatment that our best citizens and those best quali fied to act as jurors should shun that duty and ask to be excused from dis charging the same? Take for example the recent jury in tha Ransom Jones case. The jury was completed about dinner time Tuesday whereupon the court takes a recess but the poor jurymen are left in the box to set thener as best they could which I presume but few ot them could do as it is to be supposed in a jury of that de scripiion there were men not only from the country but also men from the city whose homes lie scattered from Hilton to Kidder's mill from which it was almost impossible to obtain a meal in the time allowed for recess. The case commences, much time is consumed, often in questions lorcign to the case or asked over.and over, again until about 10 o'clookjx m., when, we suppose in consideration of the health and patience of the jury (who are to be confined all oteht in the Court House), the Court adjourns and the judge, lawyers, wit nesses and prisoner retire, but the jury has to remain fur the night, even at the risk of health. Of course the jury at that late hour must have supper but when it comes there is an excuse. "It is the best that can be done at that late hour as the cooks have all gone home." Now, the jury are anxious to get to their homes, fam ilies and business, and as they have to remain the query comes, "why could not the Judge and lawyers also remain and the case be proceeded with?" I venture to affirm that if the lawyers were required to remain at night and make their speeches there would not be so much time consumed nor breath wasted. All of Wednesday and until say 12 o'clock on Thursday, the jury remaine1 on the case, and if we are rightly informed, although kept at the Court House Tuesday, Tuesday night, Wednesday, Wednesday night and Thursday op to about 12 o'clock, they received from tha authorities tut thre3 meals, and one of tbera necessarily a very sorry - one in consequence of ita - being- -ordered and fur nished at such a late- hour. Now. I contend there should be some law relievinz jurors or, in other words, making them more comfortable while in the service of the State and some law by which a case shall be decided by a majority of jurors and not allow one ignorant, unqualified juror to keep eleven men confined because they will not decide to suit hi peculiar views or feelings, as is frequently done here.
