In the firat half of the present year the aver- a:o price in the markets there, as re corded weekly in the London Gazelle. was only l 17s. 8d. per quarter. We have to go back to 1780 to find as low a price. In the interval of 104 years the quarter has only twice been under 2. The cultivation ,of wheat has almost ceased in Ireland and Scotland, has greatly diminished in the western part of England, and is steadily declining in the eastern. Ex-Secretary Fish is out in a card denying the statement published by the World that he would vote for Cleve land. , He will vote for Blaine. We suppose that the World also falsified about Bristow. The less you have to do with the World the nearer you are to the truth as a general thiner. We would as soon trust the SunMornina Star. Really, if there is any falsification in this matter it has not been made trj the World; for that paper has never yet eaid that Mr. Fish would vote for Cleveland. It said that Bristow would. and Bristow has not yet denied it and it said that Mr. Fish had expressed very plainly his low opinion of Mr. Blaine and his high opinion of Mr- Cleveland We make these remarks merely to set the matter right. The World is a true, honest, upright, manly, feariess and unconpromising advoca-e of the Democratic party of the United States and as such is recognized as the organ of that party all over tho country and it is not a good time now to at tempt to belittle its influence. New River oysters were in the mar ket this morning and for sale at $1 per gallon. - . Eggs were sailing at 30 cents per dozen at some of the grocery stores this jaorning. Steamboatmen report thst the rise in the river occasioned by the recent rains amounted to about four feet. Jacobi is tb Agent- t In just four weeks from .to-day will be the State election in Ohip, and from now until that time politics will be lively in that State. It is sometimes as well to forget what we know; but when collars are selling for 10c at Dyer & Sons it is worth your while'to remember the fact. f We invite the attention of our citizens to the fact that first quality shirts are being made to order at one dollar at the Wilmington Shirt Factory. tf. Tony Denicr's Humpty Dumpty troupe will be here on the 25th inst. The advance agent was in the city to day preparing for their appearance. A gentleman who has just returned from a ten days1 trip in the country, tells us that the cotton crop, where he has been, will be very short. lie thinks that not more than half a crop will be made. We hope that there will bo a good turnout at the meeting of the Third Ward Democratic Club, at the City Court Room to-night. It is for the purpose of reorganization and will be an important meeting. Tho street brigade are busy repairing the streets, sidewalks and crossings which were badly washed- during the recent rains.; They will find it . con siderable of a job before . they get ihrough.. : - . - The receipts of cotton to-day foot up 370 bales. at this port There will be an important meeting of ihe Young Men's Progressive DenT ocratic Club, at the City Court Room, to morrow night. The survivors of the lost steamer Dos Hermanos are yet in the city and will probably not leave until the nex steamer sails for New York. The Wilmington Light Infantry are making earnest endeavors to turn out with full rants for their tour of duty at the State Exposition at Raleigh. They wish to parade with at least 40 men and we hope to see them with that number in the ranks. The first installments of New River oysters were received here to-day by Oapt. J. M. McGowan and Mr. Will West, and ara on sale by those gentlemen. It is certainly early ia the season for them yet they open well and are as fat and well flavored as any October oysters we have ever seen. Slight Fire. The roof of the kitchen on the premises occupied by officer N. Carr, on Fifth street, between Hanover and Brunswick, caught fire this forenoon around the fine of the chimney. It was discovered soon after it had ignited and the flames were extinguished by the application of a few buckets full of water, although quite a hole was burnt in the roof. No general alarm was given. Campaign Funds. It is rumored here that one 6T the cleiks in the Postoflice in this city has been discharged and that the salaries of those who remain have been cut down $25 each. This. it is said, has been rendered necessary by the exigencies of the campaign. Mr. Steve Elkins must have soap and as the moneyed men of the North will not pony up the poor clerks throughout the country must be levied upon to help elect Mr. Mulligan Blame, the author of the "Dear Fisher" letters, to the Presidency of this great country. City Court. Cad Lowery, colored, was brought before the Mayor this morning charged with disorderly conduct. He was ad judged guilty and a fine of $5 was im posed, in default of which he was sent below for 20 days. Frank Perry, also colored, for a like offense, wa3 assessed $5, but as he could not raise that amount he was sent to the city prison for 20 days. Thomas Brown, a colored drayman. pr being disorderly and quarrelsome at a colored festival last night, was fined $10. in default of which he was sent below for 30 days. Increased Accommodations. We note lhat Messrs. HollingswoUh & Sikes have recently made extensive and important alterations and improve mentsin their stable3,corner Fourth and Mulberry streets, rendered necessary by the increase of business . An addi tion runninir the entire length ot the large building, on tho North side, has hp.p.n made for the accommodation of horses and this gives up all of the main bnildincr to the housing of vehi cles. As it is, they have hardly room enough for the demands of the business and a still further increase of accommo dations may soon be necessary. To Advertisers. The fact that the Daily Review has the larcest circulation in this city and the surrounding country ot any , paper published here docs not seem to be properly understood and appreciated by the advertising public. And not only is its subscription list the largest but its prices on contracts are the low est. These facts are of interest and im- portanc3 to the mercantile commun ity and should be thoroughly under stood and appreciated by them. We invite those meaning business to call at this office and substantiate our asser tions. Another Fire. About half-past three o'clock this af ternoon a two-story frame building on Second street, between Davis and How ard, in tho Northern section ot tho city, caught fire on the roof from a spark from the chimnev. The house was oc cupied by Amelia Miles, colored. The alarm was immediately given and the fire department were promptly on band, but the flames had been extinguished bv the efforts ot neighbors and the aorvioRs of the firemerr were not re quired. The house was the property o Messrs. Blossom & Evan3. Quite a hole was burned in the roof, which was all the damage done. mwmw. Alaj. Stedman. Maj. Chas. M. He leaves us with great encouragement for the cause of Democracy. Personal. Capt. C. Partrick, ot Clinton, Samp- gon county, was in the city to-day. He reports a shori crop of cotton in his vi cinity. Capt. R. P. Paddison was in the city to-day and we were sorry to see him in feeble health. Rev. W. T. Jones, now having charge of the Baptist churches at More head City and Beaufort, arrived in the city last night on a brief visit to his parents. Rev. J. S. Black, of Burgaw, was in the city to-day, en route, with his tami- ly, for St. Paul's. Robeson county, and will take charge of the .Presbyterian church at that place. He left for his new home this afternoon on the steamer Bladen. Mr. Edward Trail, advance agent for Tony Denier'sIIumptyDumpty Troupe, is in the city to-day busily engaged in billing the town, and if he fails to se cure a crowded house there will be - no efficacy in attractive pictures. Mr. Trail is an agreeable gentleman and represents a good company. We were pleased to meet this morning with Col. W. J. ,Walker, of Washington city, who. bears a com munication from Maj. E. N. Burke, Director General, of tho New Orleans World's Exposition, as the advertis ing representative of the Exposition in the States of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Vir ginia, North Carolina and South Caro lina, with bead-quarters at Washing ton. We have known Col. Walker well and favorably for mauy years past, as the General Traveling Agent of the At- antic Coast Line, which position ho held until the organization of the Asso ciated Railway' system abolished the office. He has many acquaintances all over the Atlantic and Gulf Seaboard and it is evident thai the managers of the Exposition have confided their interests in this respect to careful and judicious hands.
