Tlie Retreat From Moscow.
Seventy-two vears ago last Monday !
Napoleon mounted his cream-col
ored horse and left the Kremlin, and the
retreat from Moscow was bujun. Of
all the blunders in that campaign the
grt atest blunder was the campaign it
self. Napoleon admitted at St. Helena
that it was unprovoked.- All the charges
that be made against Alexander were
mere pretexts. The war begun in want
onness and ended in disaster the most
stupendous Napoleon was one of those
whom elevation spoils. iroui the
time when he assumed the crown he
had been insufferably vain andMnsuffer-
ably overbearing and insolent. He
could not brook advice. To a military
objection offered by one of his marshals
his answer was a storm ot curses
and obscenity. If it was suggested
that it would be imrueuesely difficult
to subsist a large army in a country so
sterile and so ill supplied with water
as Russia, he replied only with oaths
and filth. He seemed to think that
a tern pest-of imperial profanity would
intimidate the elements. In June,
1812, Napoleon's armic comprised
more than 1 150,000 men. He led
nearly 500,000 acros3 the Niemen.
How many returned? It is conceded
by military crkics that the campaign
was ftiebiy managed. Napoleon's
mind si ems to have been constantly
lethargic. Besides he seems to have
been almost incapable of coming to a
decision, lim lethargy and indecision
were not vices of Napoleon's earlier
career.
The next day alter the battle of
Smolensk a battle was fought at Valu
tino. a village three miles from Smok
ensk. It wa3 a battle of such impor
tance that it left 10,000 French troops
on the field dead and wounded. The
circumstances were such that it was
Napoleon's duty to be on the field.
Yet. though he listened from dawn of
day to the roar of artillery, and though
he could have galloped to the field in
thirty minutes, this greatest of military
leaders stayed away. This is surely
queer conduct in the general of an in
vading army.
In the battle of Borodino the Russian
army occupied a position within a mile
or so ot the unfordable River Moskwa,
and nearly parallel with it, its right
resting on a little stream named
Kolotcha, having high banks and
emptying into the Moskwa at nearly
right angles. Kutusolf, with his back
to the Moskwa, had 120.000. Napoleon
in his front, and of course further from
the river, bad 130,000. The bailie
began at daybreak. Napoleon took a
position in the roar of his centre and
spent most of the day walking to and
fro with his hands behind his back.
Abont ten o'clock Murat and Ney,
having by terriblo fighting driven back
Kutusoff's left wiug and got it into an
awkward position, joined in a message
to Napoleonsaying that if bp would send
them reinlorccments they could drive
the enemy ack to the angle of the
rivers and capture the entire army.
Napoleon refused and even tailed to go
himself and inspect the' field. KutusoiT
soon recovered and the opportunity was
lost. Again at 3 p. m. the same mar
shals joiutly reported a like advantage,
asked immediate reinforcements, and
promised a like result. The Emperor
questioned and doubted and dawdled
and finally. consented to send reinforce
ments, but was so slow, whether pur
posely or not, that again the opportuni
ty was lost. What was the conse
quence? Borodino was a drawn battle.
True, Napoleon gained a technical vic
tory in the fact that Kutusoff resumed
his march. But a technical victory,
especially to an invading army, is a
sorry thing. The carnace on both
sides was awful. At least 80,000 men
lay upon the field. Napoleon's admir
ers apolpgized tor his admitted feeble
management on that day by saying
that he was sick. He was not sick. He
had a badcold. but no man, merchant,
lawyer, lariner or mechanic, stops
work or calls himself Eick lor a bad
cold. The Emperor was up and com
manding the army ail day. About 4
p m. he rode over to bis left centre, a
distance of some three miles, to recon
noitre a position. The statement that
he was sick is an afterthought.
Alter he occupied Moscow bis be
havior showed pusillanimity. Haughty,
overbearing and insolent as fcelhad be
fore beeu, he had the meanness to
make advances to Alexander for peace.
He begs. In return he is snubbed.
October 13, snow fell. Again he begs
and again is snubbed. Ho is irresolute.
The case calls for instant decision. He
does not decide Every day that passes
is a day full of threats, of unim aginable
horror to his army. Never before was
there a more pressing duty for prompt
decision and prompt ac ion. Napoleon
sits in the Kremlin moody, angry, find
ing fault with everybody and, over
whelming with curses all who came
near him. The burning of Moscow
ceased on the 19Ui of September.
Napoleon during the days when the
conflagration was going on had leisure
to reflect and to advise with bis
marshals. On September 90 he should
have decided. - In the terrible strait to
which his . insane . : ; and wicked
ambition had brought him, to expect
anything from Alexander was idiotic.
It he had begun his retreat on Septem
ber 20 he would have saved his army.
But. surrounded by perils more terrible
than ever before menaced a military
chief, he spent one whole month in
irresolution and inaction. The hor-
; rors of the retreat cannot now be re
counted, isut it is worth while to
add that though the attacks of the ene
my were upon the rear guard. Napol
eon, instead of beinz constantly there
to enforce discipline, encourage hi3
troops and direct the battle, was con
stantly miles ahead in the centre of the
army, and ricing in a carriage with a
fat man. on each side to lend him
