J 8TATK NBSWal Statesville Landmarks The long, long drought was broken lastijight by a heavy rain. The weather "has been threatening for some days. Wilson Mirror: We learn from a Georgia paper that Col. Curran Battle, a native ol Nash county but for a num ber of years a resident of that State, met death the other, day under the most ter rible circumstances. He was tryincr to fix some part of he gin when his arm was.caught in the saws and so badly lacerated that he died from the effects. The Colonel was about 70 years old. and the paper from which we clean this sad news, speaks of his char acter in terms cf highest praise, and dwells with eloquent emphasis upon lhat open-handed liberality and noble charity which won the friendship of every poor man in that section. Peace to his ashes. Beaufort Telephone'. On Thursday night of last week abont 9 o'clock, a tenant house on the farm of Dr. Geo,. N. Ennett, in this county, was discov ered to be on fire and in a short time was burned to the ground. The woman of the house had just gone to Dr.Ennett's residence to get some medicine for a sick child and left two children in the house, both of whom were burned to death and their bodies almost entirely destroyed. The work is supposed to have been that of a fiendish incendiary, though the motive we cannot divine, but if so we trust be may be caught and receive the merited punishment which such a horrible crime deserves Hickory Press: In the Federal Court at Statesville last week, Jas, Bollinger was found guilty of passing counterfeit money, and sentenced, to two years in the Albany penitentiary. Vance Hall man was convicted on the same ebarge but judgment was sussfended until next tjrni of Court. filr. T. C. He . was - induced to locate there by the late: venerable Joseph Lane, a native of Buncombe county, wao was a general in the Mexi can war, and who ran for Vice Presi dent on the Democratic ticket headed by John C. Breckenridge. Mr. Land tells us that while Oregon is a Republi can State, the Democrats are sanguine of success at the approaching election next Tuesday. The party, he says, was never better organized in the State In conversation with different gentle men while passing, through Indiana, be was convinced 'that the- Hoosier State" would roll ud a handsome majority for Cleveland and Hendricks. Asheville Citizen: Capt .Johnston has returned from his canvass of the district, in the verv best of spirits.
