T h e D a i I y R ev i e w . JOSH. T. JAMES, Editor & Prop. WILMINCTON. N; a TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 0 1883. Entered at the Postoulce at Wilmington, N. C. - ' - as second-class matter. ; , Considerable significance is attached in - New York to the declaration of State i Senator Thomas F. Grady in lavor of the renomination.of Tilden and Ilendricks a the Democratic Presiden tial ticket in 1884. Senator Grady is a Tammany leader and the inliniale per sonal and political friend of John Kelly, and his pronunciamento in favor of Tilden is believed to have the approv al of the Tammany chieftain, ; ' - The interest felt in the Virginia clec tion is attested by the action of sixty five wholesale firms in Richmond, who have sigocd a paper stating that, in view of the "great importance of iho ap proaching election," they have agreed to keep their travelling salesmen in the city until after they have had au oppor tunity to vote. Iu Staunton, Norfolk. Danville, Liberty and other cities, the business men decided to close their places on election day, in order that their employees might work for thc success of the Democratic ticket. In England an absurd fashion has set in of undervaluing pictures as orna ments tor a room The room itself. say the apostle3 of the new dispensa tion niust be a picture. Nothing but decorative art is permissible. An art patron not long since got a well-known decorator to produce an ideal dining room. When it was finished he asked : "Where w hall I put my pictures?" The reply was : "Your pictures would spoil the room. You must build a. gallery ;" and the art decorator laughed scornfully when the poor householder pleaded: "But I bought my pictures to live with!" Fewer and fewer pic turesare now hung on English walls: ; A novel real estate project la Chjca!?6 U the building of an artificial island in the lake in front ot the city, laying it off in residence lots and selling them to wealthy citizens who may wish to live where they can see the city without being in it. The proposition is to first forma square or circular enclosure, with walls mada of loose stone and rising to a safe level above the water o the lake, and then make the enclosure a general dumping-ground for the re fuse and rubbish from the city till a plateau lor the future 'town. shall be secured. It is thought such an island would be a romantic ami attractive place of residence. of the law" We cadge"6ur rulers and although it is not always done i without discord yet it is effected wi'hont- vio lence and without the slightest tremble in commercial and financial circles; Last Thursday the command of the army was transferred from one man to J another and the fact was scarcely com picntcd upon. it is as the New York World says: Without a ripple ot oxcitcruent, aN most without attracting a passing notice, the command of the army of the United States was last Thursday transferred from General Sherman to Lieutenant Gencial Sheridan. A general order from General Sherman announced in ten lines his relinquishment of the com mand. A general order quite as brief from Lieutenant-General Sheridan gave notice of his assumption of tbe com mand. Then the two generals held a reception and when it'was overpaid a visit together to the President., Only this, and nothing more. In any other country acbaugo in the head of the army would be an occasion of excitement if not of commotion In many governments it could scarcely be attempted without revolution. Here we have no need of a stantting army" except as a iroutier patrol. Our soldiers take the character ot police Probably J the only notice taken ot the change in the command will be by .those .who regret that a position of such honor should descend from a man of brains and culture to a rough, coarse and illiterate trooper. How- happy is a country whose etrcugth is in its people instead of in great armies and powerful navies, and whose glories and triumphs are those of peace and not of war ! A compact little telegraph company is being organized to do business be tween the New York l'rodueeExehage and the Chicago Hoard of .Trade. It was proposed to put up wires at first, but it was not easy to get a right- oi way, and the plan is now to buy the wires put up by the Nickle-piatc Kail road lino. They run from Weehaw ken to Grand Crossing, eight miles from Chicago, aud can be had lor 000,000. It will cost about 5,000 lo run the wires into New York City, and $10,000 to finish the Chicago end. It is proposed to have mly. members ot the two Exchanges as stockholders, and to guard againts . consolidation by . providing that no one shall hold more than 500. The bftsinc&s to be con trolled is very large, five firms which operate in both cities ! alone pay over $100,000 a year iu tolls, and there is talk about a rate as low as ten or fifteen cents Wilkie Collins writes most "of his novels with his own handci but now and then rheumatic gout gives him such pain that he caunot hold a pen, and then he employs an amamfensis. The greater part of 'Thc Mooustone"' was dictated, and Mr: Collins says it islhe only one of his works which he. has never read. The recollection of the agony he sutVcred while dictating it deters him. "For a long time, while that book was writing' he says, 'T had the utmost difficulty in getting an amanuensis who would go on with his work without interrupting himself . to sympathize with me. I am much Ifke a beast in many ways if I am in pain, I must howl; and, as I lay iiWhc bed in the corner yonder, I would often break forth in a yell of anguish'. Then my amanuensis would urge me to conu pose myself and not to write any more. Between the paragraphs I would go along nicely enough, having iu my mind just what I wanted to say. and these interruptions would drive me mad.. Finally, a young girl, not more than seventeen, offered to help me, and I consented that she should, in case she was sura she could let roe howl and cry out in my pain while she kept her place at the table- She did it, toe, and 'The Moonstone' finally came to an end. But I never read it never." There is no country like ours and . we are proud ot it and with a just pride. It is, indeed, "the land ot Iho free and the home' of the braye.'J?
