THE YEAR AlilWAD. Thecurtaiu has fallen, tbe play is done, says the Herald. Its title is '1884 in Foreign Land," arid the ao- dieoco, as it departs, expresses a free opinion ol its merits. Tbe general ver dict seems to be, "Dialogue good, char acters sometimes interesting, incidents varied but confused; no centrai plot." The effect is on ihe rbole disappoint- mer. . England and Fiance furnished the martial incidents. The defeat of the Arabs at Teb and Tamanieb, the fall of Berber, the siege oi Khartoum, the murder ol Colonel Stewart, the heroism oi txordon? these introduced unusn redcoats with a background of Orien tials. Captain-Fournier's treaty with Li Hung Chang, the bombardment of Kelung, the destruction of the Arscna' and Kinpai forts at Foochow, the blockade of Formosan ports these showed the French marines in their most gallant colors. . Sensational scenes were abundant. Many of them, however, were ill con" trived. The explosions at the London railway stations and London as well a the attempt on the Bridge. Nitder- w&ld monument, were roundly hissed by the gallery. The burning of the Stadt Theatre in Vienna, the sufferings of the survivors of the Mignonette, the destuction of the Royal Castlef Chr.s- tian&feorg, the earthquake and hurri cane in Spain, the collision of the Lax- ham and GijoD these, however, were remarkable scenic effects. There was some chance for a specta cle in Ihe matriage of Prince Louis ot Battenberg and Duke Sergins of Rus sia. The White Elephant led the an nual processfou of notabilities. Alfred Tennyson in his peer's robes; Baker Pasha as an Egyptian hero-, Lod Ri pon fighting the Anglo-Indian bigots; Lord Wolseley building rafts; Lord Dufferin as tho Governor General of India; the Tich jorne claimant as a freeman; Mme. Hugues shooting the spy; Miss iortescuc receiving ner damages; Lord Coleridge as a stern parent; Prince Bismarck appealing to the Reichstag; King Humbert nobly ministering in the hospitals all these had their part in their pageant. In its rear, loudly applauded, marched the Australian crioketer?, who lowered the British flag; and behind them, under a canopy. i.aced those excellent colts Harvester and St. Gatien, who ran a dead heat for the Derby, and last of all came the invincible St. Simon.. A muffled roll of drums i3 heard. . A funeral march peals forth. Laid on a huge catafaluqe come the dead of the year. Dr. Edward Lasktov Kesbub Chunder Sen, Abraham Hay ward, Eugene llouher. Thomas Chenery, Dr. Isaac Todhunter. Francois Mignet, the Duke of Albany, Jean Baptiste Dumas, I Charles Reade. Henry J. Byron, the Duke of Buccleuch, the Hertford, tbe Duke ot Marie Taglioni, Fanny Michael Costa; Midhat Marquis ol Wellington, Elssler, Sir Pacha, Sir Bartle Frere, Professor Lepsius, Count Todleben, Earl Cowley, Rev. Mark Pattison. Sir Erasmus Wilson, Hans Makart, Paul Lacroix. A. M. Sullivan, Henry Fawcett, the Duke of Brun swick, M. Vancorbeil, Bastien Lepage see their names inscribed in letters oi gold and uncover before the mighty dead. The pageant passes. The sensation al scenes are cheered. The cnedy is effective. And yet the spectators are disappointed. "The piece has no plot." they. say. Politically.indeed.it is naueht. England advanced in Egypt? Has the compromise on the Franchise bill borne fruit? Has Mr. Gladstone or the House of Peers greater cause for boasting? Spain the monarchy is tottering. In Germany the Cban cellor's'snarl with the clericals and tbe Reichstag seems inextricable. In Rus sia tbe Czar is still fighting his secret foes. Out of all the wranglings and conferences of the year is- born tbe little Congo State, and its god-mothers are already quarrelling round the font The Philadelphia Times states lhat a movement in tbe direction of cheap theatricals was made in New York last week by a half dozen managers ot that city, who formed a combination to produce pleasing dramatic attrac tions in all parts of the country at cheap prices of admission. In each city from five to ten weeks' time will be booked and it will be filled by dramatic, operatic or spectacular com binations controlled by the syndicate. The general prices of admistion will be ten. fifteen and twenty-five cents. An additional fiye cents will be charged for a reserved seat. It is said that time has a ready been booked in Baltimore Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis. Cleve" land, Buffalo, Wilmington, Del., Ro chester, Syracuse and other cities. The syndicate will simply rent tbe houses4 and give two performances a day, and it is represented that a Dumber of corn- hinntinns of co-id remsto. have nl. eady irfdicated their willingness t u oder tbe lie wlwrranateaient tor taint Its. Leading Low Churchmen have already been in consultation about it, and have called in eminent ecclasiastical law yers to counsel them what steps can be taken under the cannons to impress the assistant bishop that there is noth ing in the prescribed form for ad mission to holy orders which will sanction tbe authorization of what they call 'an Episcopal monk.1 Tne High Churchmen of the school of Dr. Dix and Father Brown, on the other band, are disposed to accept the thing as. a disposition on the part of the Church to utilize brotherhoods, as well a3 sisterhoods within her pale. What the final outcome of the controversy will be remains;to be seen. The as sistant bishp at present is down in Florid, probably all unconscious of the storm he has raised. JANUARY JOKES. i A new opera is called "The Oranjr Girl." It is expected to provoke "peels" of laughter. Powerful steel knives which will cut cold iron have been invented. They will be useful in Western restaurants. A Georgia man has paid for a farm with the melons off it. to say nothing oi' the struggling young doctors he has firmly established in t usiness.
