The Daily Review t JOSH. T. JAMES. Editor Prop vrnjvnNGTON. k c SATURDAY. JANUARY 17. 1885. Entered at the Postoffice -at Wilmington, N. C. as second-class matter. Tbe New York Sun hns something more tb say in its yesterday's issue rela tive to tbe Sherman-Davis controversy. Its remarks are exceedingly terse and to the point and not very much to Gen. Sherman's credit. We print the article herewith: Gen. Sherman's statement now on file in tbe War Department does not possess historical yalue proportionate to its length find its discursiveness. Bat it sheds some light on the workings of 1 he General's mind. The exact words used by Gen. Sher man at the Grand Army meetingjn St. Louis are not on record. lie says tbat the newspaper reports. da wbieh Mr. Jefferson Davit's card of denial was based, misrepresented his 1 actual re marks. What he did affirm, according to his present recollection, was that he "had seen papers which convinced him that even Mr. Davis, the President of the Southern Confederacy, bad daring tbe progress of the war changed his States rights doctrines, and had threat ened to use force even Lee's army should any State of lhe Confederacy at tempt to secede from that Govern ment." J Until now, the controversy ha3 pro ceeded on the supposition that Gen. Sherman attacked Mr. Dayis because he had seen, and distinctly remember ed seeing, in a particular letter address ed by Mr. Davis to the Governor of a Southern State, a definite threat to coerce the State if it should attempt to secede from the Confederacy. Thi3 is the point against which Mr, Davis' denial was chiefly directed. So with Mr. Lamar s denial in Mr. Davivs be half. "I assert," said Mr. Lamar, 'that no such letter is in existence, and in my opinion no such letter was ever written." So with Mr, Vance's, denial. He says that no'sueh letter ever existed. No letter containing such a threat was ever received by him. Although in Gen. Sherman's present -tatement ot p the original charge, as made at St. Louis, he refers to "papers" which have convinced him, and not to the evidence of any particular letters ot Mr Davis's, ihere are, nevertheless, in other parts of the General's statement vague allusions to a particular letter. He says be "gave it little attention" at the time of its discovery at Raleigh. He does not know whether it was not cor snmed by the great Chicago fire, amorg other documents deposited at Gen. Shoridan's headquarters. The obscurity of the references to this mj-sterious letter, and the uncer tainty bow far Gen. Sherman was in fluenced by its unknown contents in lorming his opinion of Mr. Davis' in tention?, indicate that 'his memory is muddled in regard to the whole busi ness. It is aloibst certain that his ar raignment or Mr. Davis in the St. Louis speech was loosely conceived, and hastily, if not rashly, expressed. It is quite probable that bis understand ing oi JeflersonSDkvls' attitude toward the disaffected Stales is derived not frow nny particular letter of Mr. Davis', but from general recollection of talk ot 'he time, and from such indirect evi dence as is contained in Alexander H. Stephens' epistle l6Her6chel V John son, and in Mr. Davis' habeas corpus message to the Confederate Congress. Now that he is called upon for docu mentary proof, these are the best wit nesses Gen. Sherman is able to offer. All of this goes to show that a man of Gen. Sherman's basty temper and somewhat illogical habits of ratiocina tion is not a valuable assistant in his torical investigations calling for close aud exact thinking and great caution in the statement ol fact. Gen. Sher man's testimony is interesting as a psy chological study, but not otherwise. The subject involved is ttris dispute namely, the strained relations be tween the Davis Administration and some of the State Governments during the last two years of the war is of the very greatest historical interest. The important documents now in the pos session of the Sun. and soon to be pub lished, will throw far more light on this period ot the Confederacy's history than anything that has been produced. Balloon races are about to be started in Paris. The start will take place at some point within the fortifications and the church spire of one ot the neighbor ing villages will be fixed upon as the winning post. It will then be for the jockeys, or rather the captains, to ex plore the different strata ot the atmos phere till they meet with a favorable wind and the more readily and skill fully a balloon is manoeuvred in this preliminary search the better chance, of course, it wiil stand of reaching tbe appointed destination first. Other ex periments in ballooning are to take place in February. Great things are expected of an "'aerial velocipede" just invented by an amateur. The motive power is supplied by wheels worked by pedals, as in an ordinary bicycle or tri cycle. M. Godard will make a trial trip about the same time with his new "a?ria torpedo," a species of military balloon designed to accompany an army on a campaign. M. Godard says that with this balloon it will be possi ble for him to poise over a besiged city and drop into it 2,000 pounds' weight of bombs. Loid Sudeley's fruit plantations at Toddingtoo, England, extend to about 400 acres, and the land was formerly an arable farm rented at 1 per acre, which nobody would take. Tbe past season has not been a good one, but seventy-five tons of fruit have been gathered. There are 50,000 plum trees, 900 pear trees, 9.000 damsons, and 550 cherry trees. Of small fruits there are 223,000 black currant bashes, 120,000 raspberries, 20.000 red currents, 100.006 gooseberries, while 130 acres areentire lj deroled to strawberries. There are a!ao 10,000 roplars, 100 Scotch first ard 100 cob nuts, planted for Welter ing purpose. Lord Sudeley basestab. iisbed a bee tar in ra well, which be finds a valuable aid in his fruit culture. There are 170 hives, and they have proved most profitable. Adjoining the apiary ia a rabbit warren of 200 acres, in which 0,000 rabbits are kiHed every season. Lord Sudeley sells all his fruit to a jam maker of Ealing who haa built a jam factory at Toddington, where 100 tons have been made this season. JANUARY JOKES. Ouida says: "A girl's love must never be begged, but conquered." Trial's all very well, nut how to subdue tbe tbick-soled parent of the period is what's bothering our young men now. San Francisco Post. 'You'll excuse me,'' said Fogg to the milkman, with whom be bad been having a long discussiom. "but 5'our arguments are very unlike your 'milk." "How's that?" "Why, they won't hold water." Boston Transcript. A father-in-law at a wedding attempt ed to chaff tbe groom : "I hope now, sir. tbat you wiil not get into any mo?e scrapes." "No," said the new son-in-law, "I thall not have a chance; 1 shall never get out of this one." Providence News. At an English country huse at luncheon, after morning service, the popular young curate was accosted by a venerable divine. "How long, sir," said he, "did it take you to write that sermon you gave us this morning? ' ' Oh, about a week." "Dear me." re plied tbe other, "it took me four." New York Sun. A woman who had buried three hus bands was inconsolable over the death of tbe fourth.
