Editor & Prop WIIJrilNGTON. N. C FRIDAY. JAN I AUY 23. 1885. 1 cteted at the Postoffice at Wilmington, M. C. as second-class matter. The folly ot continued litigation over mall amounts was rarely better illn t rated tban in a case between a Pitt bo re dry goods firai and a Rochester tradesman. The latter bought a bill of goods from the forme , t- be sent in a small baK on which th a expressage was twenty-five cenis The Pittsburg merchant, however, boxed up the package and the express charge wa? thirty five cents. The Rochester man refused to pay the unauthorized ten cents extra, and the Piftsburg firm sued him for it. Tiiey won the case, but the Rochester man thinks ot taking an appeal to the Supreme Court, so there is no knowing wjiere the fool litigation will end or bow much that paltry dime will coat both parties. The New York Sun is authority for the following: '"The Japanese dentist does not frighten bis patients with an array ot steel instruments. All of his operations in tooth-drawing are per formed by the thumb and forefinger of one hand. The skill necessary to do this is only acquired after long practice, but once it is obtained the operator is able to extract half a dozen teeth in about thirty seconds without once re moving fcis lingers from the patient's mouth. The dentist's education com mences with the pulling out of pegs which have been pressed int soft wood ; it ends with the drawing of hard pegs which have been driven into an oak plank with a mallet. A vrit3r in tae Union Medicate says that no hu man jaw can resist the delicate but po werful manipulation of the Japanese dentist." Mr. Collins, who ha9 ; chari of the Senate Bankruptcy b 1', does not at all despair of still getting it bet'on; the House and securing its passage. He will now be forced tj put off any fur ther action till the third JM nday in February. If the interval is w,;ll em ployed by tbese business men and r ganizuions understanding ho imcort ance of the measure, there is every reason to think that it may be carried. Tne Xew York 'limes says: "Mcm 'bcrs of the House, evjeu those who urt1 now a!K)Ut tov leayd ft, have a lively sense ot the force of pdblic opinion when it is cleanly expressed, The mer cantile community is happily well enough organized to give forcible ex tression toils views o;i a subject where opinion is as well settled ami as uni form as it is on this, and a proper effort would do much t secure the passage ef the Senate bill." Sprinklers in a Fall Rivr miil iaved it from destruction by fire the other day, but the water damaged g ods and machinery to the value of a hundred thousand doilais. At first sight ft wuld seem that such a remedy is al. mos as bat as tlrediseasv it cu es: but it is evidently not quite &o bad. The miil itself remains, and in a few weeks, instead of months, can be put in run uing order again. Bt side?, where there were goods and machinery capa ble of sustaining so much datuaee from watt-r, the loss by total destruc- jtion would evidently have been much greater. Extraordinary care is taken against. fire in all Ntw Eng'arid milis. All or nearly all of them belong to mut ual insurance companies, and fr iheir own protection insist upon frequent inspections and the adoption of all approved inventions for the prevention and quenehing of fires, Among these is the sprinkltr, whieh has more than once proved itt efficacy, either in extin guishing incipient fires or in prevent ing their spread, j j m A New Orleans special says: The discontent among the laborers on the ground increases rather than abates. A placard was found pasted in a conspi cuous place yesterday morning, threat ening in the name of the unpaid em ployees to burn the buildings unless back wages were paid at once. A tour among the.men yesterday elicited the information that the dissatisfac ion re sulted from a belief that the! gate re ceipts and other incoming fnnds were being perverted into other channels, while they should be applied to the pay. roll. The incendiary feeling seemed to be confined, however, to a small class of the men. Among the others there is a settled determination to strike out right on Monday morning if they are not paid before that time. Two of the Exposition firemen were arrested yesterday morning for stealing brandy and tobacco from tbe North Carolina exhibit. They were locked up in a down-town station, where they con. fessed the crime. No arrests have been made as yet in the robbery of $1,000 worth of gems in the German section of the main buildlnsr. The weather continues cold and cloudy, and yester day's attendance was very light. We observe quite a fine display oi new Revolvers for very reasonable rices , at Jacobi'a Hardware Depot. t Tbe death cf the Earl of Aylesford among ihe cowboys appears to be an o her argument of tome prominence to the rffett that mere spendthrift"?sm and libertinism will get away wiih the healthiest nd best protected persons in due time. Even among the c6wboys he always opened a fresh bottle when any guest armed and as a natural con sequence died of inflammation of the bovelsatthe ag of thirty-five. On January 10, 1371, h succeeded his fath er ps the eeventh Eirl of Aylesford He was marred In Edith, the third daughter of L:eut. Col Peers lyiUiams, of Temple House Berks, on Januriry 8, 1871. The Prince of Wa!e3 stood sponsor for the latttr He was an intimate satellite of the Prince ot Wales, ncoompansirg his Royal Highness on his India expedi tion and was his companiot in many fa mous frolics. His wife eloped with Lord Blandford, now Duke of Marlborough, and the Qaeen3 Proctor intervenrd to prevent his obtaining a divorce from her. He dropped out of London society and devoted him?eif to a roving exist ence, found his way to Big Springs Texas, bought 27,000 acres of the Texas Pacific land grant .tnd meaut to live a wiid, prodigal life on the plains, per haps sometime to reform, when a caller came that refused the bottle and ended the entire same that is all. hi HURTS. Stockmen in Oregon have lost heavi ly by recent snows arid severe cold. Three men near ihe Dalles have 1 -et 3,600 sheep and 800 head ot cattle, and at last accounts the animals were still raying by tne hundred Ii Josephine and Umatilla counties also cattle and sheep by tbe thousand have perished. A discussion has been going on in one of the Englbh sporting papers on the destruction caused by thoughtless fox hunters. Mr. R, Wright, ot Rich mond, Yorkshire, declares that he has lost $30,000 through fox hunting in eight years, as the hunt destroys bis brond mares and foals, while the neigh boring farmers are still greater suffer ers. Among the bequests made in the Wili of a bachelor who died in Spo'swood, N. J., recently, was one giving $500' to a church, provfned that annually, on the anniversary d his-" death, the bjell be tolUd and the same number of strokes struck as he had attained year? The residue of his estate he bequeathed to another church on condition that the family burial plot be kept in good order. - The Heart Howccl Oovvn by Weight of Woe."
