JAMES, Editor & Pmfc WILMINGTON, N. C. TUESDAY. JANUARY 27. 1885. Entered at the Postoffice at Wilmington. N. C, aa second -class matter. BradstreeVs give3 a very interesting summary of commercial matters fur tbe week which ended with last Sat urday. It says: m , The severity of the weather during the past- week has exercised an unfav orable influence on general trade, as ho,w i by special telegrams from cen ters West and Northwest. DradstrccCs advices from Ciocionatti, Omaha, and Indianapolis emphasize this point. At New Orleans the course of general trade is discouraging: at Chicago there has been a decrease in the volume of transactions, except in a tew lines; at St. Louis there is not much commer cial activity ; at Savannah business is fairly satisfactory, while at Charleston, S. C. Des Moines, Iowa, and at Tope ka and Lawrence, Kans., the reverse is true. Kansas City reports the custo mary amount of business at this season of the year; Pittsburgh admits arsome what belter demand for groceries and dry goods. Detroit's commerce at this time compares favorably with last year at the corresponding period, while trade at Philadelphia is said to be im proving with the influx of small orders. At Boston no branch ot business is re ported to be specially active except that of cotton goods. The widely published reports of an improvement in the iron trade appear to be confined to the West, and even there to some gain as to in quiry. Season delivery contracts are not specified in announcements. At Philadelphia some merchant steel and sheet orders are mentioned. At Pittsburg the iron trade is the reverseof encouraging, and east ot Ohio and north ot Maryland two-thirds ot the entire output of crude iron is being made at present. Tbe only change in the iron market reported is an advance at Pitts burgh in tbe price of nails of 10c. per keg. The condition ot tbe anthracite coal trade is about what has been fore shadowed in these columns. The Penn sylvania Railroad Company would not join. Coal has been selling at $3 along side at New York (steam sizes) against an average of $3.60 in 1884. and there is already talk of the disposal of up wards ot 50,000 tons ot coal at auction, as-in 1876 and in 1879. The New York dry goods market is fairly firm. Com mission houses report tbe demand from wholesale buyers to be, steady and to have extended over a wide range. Cot ton continued to decline during the ear ly portion of the week, but the decreas iug receipts finally stiffened prices. Kentucky tobacco is strong and active. Petroleum is dragging along at figures which are generally admitted to be low when all the features of the situa tion are considered. The interior de mand lor grocery staple? has sustained a slight improvement, but is still be hind tbe expectations of dealers. Sugar is higher, and closes firm for raws. Coffee closes lower, and is weak. The consumptive demond for wool has been a little more active, and the maiket generally is firm at unchanged prices. Cash wheat closes where it did a week ago at i5c, after having lost lie. per bushel. The principal cause of the de cline was falling away in the export and speculative demands. Cash corn loses 3c., closing at 53c. against 563 c. a week ago. Indian corn bas been in much better demand within aday or two, and. visible supplies are small. The forward movement of wheat and corn from the northwest and .west is heavier and promises to continue so. Provisions and hog products are weaker. The latter have dtclincd in sympathy with grain and a light home and foreign de mand. Hog receipts west have been smaller aud prices therefore higher. There were 386 failures in the United Sta'es during the past week reported to BradstreeCs, as c mi pared with 445 in the preceding week, and with 310, 289 and 205 respectively in the correspond ing weeks of 1884, 1883 and 1882 About 85 per cent were those of small traders whose capital was less than $5,000. Canada bad 30, a decrease ot 7. The New York Herald is very posi tive and very emphatic in its denuncia tion of the miserable wretches, who un der cover of the protection afforded them in this country, hatch their schemes to destroy innocent people. We copy here i portion of its article on the subject : America has the utmost contempt for the dynamiters It knows them to be scoundrels. It knows them to be byprocrites. It knows them to be re pudiated by the opinion of decent Irishmen domiciled among us. It knows that murder is as far from tbe thoughts of Irishmen in America as it is from the thoughts of all other classes of American citizens. Americans loathe these blackguards. They have long concealed their loathing from motives of international comity. They have not wished to express a per sonal reeling on matters which touch tbe weli being of a friendly nation like Englacd. If England misgoverns Ireland, we hint at the palpable points of tuisgov ernment. If the Saxon cannot live with the Celt, we mark their ethnologi cal differences. If a law of repression is passed, we show where it might have been mitigated by an absence of preju dice. Bnt werrit comes to murder, we take another point of view. Murder? Ay, the murder of inno cent travellers Tbe murder of Ameri cans enjoying their holiday abroad. The murder ot tourists who have read of the Tower and of the Houses of Par liament, and who, on a Saturday, visit those monuments of English history. The murder of men who, taking their pleasure, become the victims of vile schemers making a pecuniary profit out of the ignorance of tbe lowest, class of their countrymen and countrywo men. Do not let us mince matters. Let ns admit right here that tbe brawl in Chambers street shows clearly enough where the headquarters of these base conspirators lie. And let us say that, as they live here, here in the midst of us, in the foremost city of the United States, we express the opinion of tbe people of New York and of the United States id booing that such cowardly scoundrels may be broneht to justice It is no question of Irish independ ence. On that theme we are never wearied of giving our views. It is a question of dastardly assassination, and it a moral law exists, if society is bound together by any other code than that of accident, we declare that this lepro sy must be stamped out, now and forever. Socialism and anarchy have been rampant abroad. The news of every day recounts their victims. From czars to ministers of police, from rnlers on the throne to the meanest spies their, bloody Htt is constantly unfolded. But we do not propose that socialists and anarchists shall live and thrive and batch their plots amon us; and they shall not take as their rea-on of exis tence the troubles of any nation with which we may profoundly sympathize. let this be understood. Let all scoun drels domiciled in America understand that we will no loDger make terms with tbem. Let them see that our public opinion is willing to exterminate them like rats. Then their absurd vanity, their craving tor notoriety, their belief that an explosion in London makes heroes and martyis out of their. miserable self- conceit, will vanish like a noisome vapor dispelled by tbe rays of the morning eun. JANUARY JOKES. A little "boy's grief upon being refused permission to attend a circus, was in part sssua:ed by the assurance from his mother that if he would dry his tears, he miglr go and see his father have a tooth extracted. A widow, intending to succeed her husband in the management of a hotel, advertised that "The hotel will be kept by the widow of tbe former landlord, Mr. Brown, who died last Summer on a new and improved plan." Why is this butter JiKe Ssamson asked tbe spruce young man who tends the ribbon counter, but the landlady looked sternly at him, remarking: "You'd better settle last week's bill." and tbe cream of the joke was lost . Tve said often that I would take means to prevent yonng men from comingaround my house," said a father the other day, "and I've done it. My daughter is too young to think of mar riage." "What have you done?" asked a neighbor; "bought a dog?" "No, I've bought my daughter a piano." "Did you writ up this local for Snooks, the grocer?' asked tbe city ed itor of a contemporary of bis assistant "Yes, sir.'.' "Well, do you consider it just the thing to announce that his fresh eggs can't be beat; his cheese goes off ot its own accord, and his butter occu pie9 a strong place in the regard ot the public?" Postal Cards will bo Made no Longer! That is because tbey are just long enough now, being exactly nve inches long. Brown's Iron Bitters will not be made in any respect different from what it now is. Because experience has shown that it is exactly suited to the needs ot sick people, and that it con quers thspepsia and a whole lot of other troubiesomecomplaints. Dr. N. S. Ruggles. Marion, Mass.. says, "I recommend Brown's Iron Bitters as a valued tonic for enriching the blood and removing all dyepeptic symptoms.' Quarterly Meeting:.
