FRID4Y. JANUARY 30. 1885. LDtCTed at the Postofllce at Wilmington, N. C, as second-class matter. A society has been formed in Boston to help its members purchase a home or commence business when they are married. Eligibility to membership consists simply in being unmarried. This surprising scheme provides that a member need have paid in only $250 to become entitled lo the lull benefit of $1,000 at the end of eighteen months. As the association has just begun operation, no benefit will become due until 1880. The Secretary claims a membership of 100 already, and hope fully predicts eqeo! 12,000 within five years. j Gam bet la's cottage at Ville d'Avray, to which he loved to retire from the worry and turmoil of political life, has been restored to the condition in which it was during Gaoibetta's lifetime, and will heccclorth bo preserved from all interference. The articles of furniture, pictures, and ornaments are again in the old co refers and hang on the wall?, and the admirers of the departed statesman are allowed access to the p ace where they may see how the man who was accused by his adver saries of indulging in every kind of ex travagance really lived in great sim plicity. MaTk Twain is an inveterate smoker. He smokes constantly while at h's work, and. indeed, all the time, trom halt past 8 in the morning to hal. past 10 at night, stopping only when at his meals. A cigar lasts him about forty minhtes. now that he ba3 reduced to an exact science the art of reducing the weed to ashes. So he smokes trom fifteen to twenty cigars every day. Some time ago he was persuaded to stop the practice, and went a year and more without tobacco; but he found himself unable to carry along impor tant work which he undertook, and it was not until he resumed smoking that he could do it. Since then his faith in his cigar has not wavered. The Sacramento River, says the Co lusa (Cal ) Sim. ha for a few weeks past been a puzzle to many people. Sometimes it will reach the higb-wat r mark at Grimes when it lacks several feet of that point at Colusa. Once Inst year it passed the high-water mack of any previous j ear at Colusa, but no great flood was seen further down. At that rise it lacked a little of being up to high water at Butte City, and a couple of miles above Butte City it lacked a Icol of high water. Oaring the late flood the river lacked some two feet of high water at Butte City, and it came within five inches of the extreme high water at Colusa, and higher than ever before, except a few hours last year. The London Lancet is glad to be able to give a satisfactory account ot" ihe healtn ol Mr. Gladstone "The disor der of his health," it says, "consifeting chiefly of" slight catarrh and lumbago, with sleeplessness, is only too easily explained by the late prevalence of east winds, following the exhausting work ot the summer holidays and the au tumn session, and coinciding with an anxious and complicated state of public afTiirs. It is not the first time that such attacks, occurring iu similar cir cumstances, have shown that even Mr. Gladstone's powers have their limits. Happily, his ailments have promptly yielded to apt remedaea and to compar ative rest, and.there is a fair prospect that, without public inconvenience, bis health may be scon fully restored." Recent facts and figures in tho Tims-Democrat concerning the popu lation of New Orleans will create con siderable surprise, Ip a population of 230,000 there are seven white women to every six white men, and four femaie to throe male negroes. This is the largest excess of female .population ot any city in the Union, not excepting Boston. The death rate is very favor able to the gentler sex. For the first half of January the deaths were, males 1SG; females, 103. So it seems that in this remarkable city nine males die for every two females, and the death rate for the men is forty-six per thousand and for the women twenty-one. If nothing occurs to disturb this propor tion in twenty years New Orleans will have two women for every man, acd in a generation men will be so scarce that they will be too highly prized as orna ments to be of much service in the use ful walus of life. The religious condition of Harvard College is under discussion in Boston. Since the eoerable Dr. Peabody re tired irom the preacher's cnair, three years ago. it has been vacant. It is not the policy of the college to elect a successor. Morning prayers have been conducted by various clergymen, and the regular Sunday evening service in the chapel has been maintained ia the same way. Beyond tho perfunctory services it is impossible to discover the least effort on the part oi the college athorities to minister to the spiritual needs of the students. The college seems content to develop the mind and (he body of the students, and leave their spiritual needs out oi the problem of education. Charles Gayarre is a New Orleans Cre ole. He writes that such Creoles asCable has described are creatures of his own imagination. The character of amia ble idiocy with which he has invested most of his personages, Mr. Gayarre says, may have been k ndly intended by bim as a harmless, if not a charit. able conceDtion. to be acceotid with a sort-of gratitude, because it might have been much worse. But the Creoles ot Louisiana canuot admit that they have had any kinship with th se effeto and imbecile creatures who figure in Mr. Cable's books. They never had the manners, the feelings,, and the language attributed to them, and an educated gentleman of the depoch epicted never addressed his wife and daughter, or any one of his equals, in the jargon of the negro. Gayarre declares that he challenged Cable to name two Creole families with whem he was intimately acquainted. He could not. JAN UAKV JOKES. "Don't talk to me about Wagner.
