Yesterday's New York Herald cable grams from Europe contained the fd lowing relative to Mrs. Dudley, the young woman who shot O'Donovan li'Ssa: The officials at the Cliehia- Hospital, where soldiers' widows are trained as curses, express surprise at the state ments cabled from New York that Mrs. Dudley, who shot O'Donovan Kossa, claimed to have graduated as a nurse at that institution. They say no woman ol her name or description was ever trained there. The only nurse iiiaduated at the hospital who has letc England for Americarso ar a8 the offi cials know, went a year and a half ago. Examination of the police reports in the Worship Street Police Court re veals tho following Lucilia Dudley, a ladylike looking person, aged about twenty-four years, who described herself as a governess, charged with attempting suicide. A porter on the Great Eastern Railway deposed that on the arrival 61 his train at Liverpool street, London, he saw tbe prisoner, Mrs. Dudley, iu a first class carriage apparently asleep, with a handkerchief over her face; removing the handkerchief, the witness found her to be insensible ; she wa3 holding a bottle labled "Poison;" Sirs Dudley was removed to a hospital; witness stated tbat nobody else wasin the rail way carriage. The surgeon who attended Mrs. Duds .ey at the hospital deposed that she was suffering lrom theeffects of chloroform. Witness said she became sensible after remaining unconscious eight hours. Mrs. Dudley denied that she had taken anything of a poisonous nature. When taken into custody Mrs. Dudley was detected in the act af trying to swallow a white powder. A jailer at the police station where Mrs. Dudley was imprisoned deposed thai she expressed regret at having failed to accomplish her purpose. The magistrate ordered Mrs. Dudley to be remanded to allw an examina tion of the powder. When the exami lion of the prisoner was resumed an analyst deposed that the white powder Mrs Dudley attempted to swallow was opium. Another packet c f opium was found sewn in her clothes. Mrs. Dudley stated in court that she had no relatives iiviug, and that she had been a gover ness. She also described herself as a hospital nurse, but her appearance seemed to contradict this statement. She refused to give an account of her self Five letters were found in her possession, but they furnished no clew to ber idtntity. She said she was driven to attempt suicide by the loss of her child, which was one year old. A pair of child's shoes and gloves found in her possession tended to corroborate this assertion. The magistrate said thkit in vi w of the fact that the chaplaiu of the Hot so ol Detention siaied ihat the prisoner r-fued to promise not to repeat the offence he was unable j.o set her at lib erty without tvVo sureties of 25 sterl ing each lor her good behavior for ihr a i months. Mrs. Dudley smited at t.hU anr.onnceme.U. Sic" left the court room quietly. The chaplain of the prison in which she was confined has oecn advised of Mrs. Dudley's attempt to kill Rossa, and has taken passage on one of the outgoing steamers for New York. Much sympathy is expressed for Airs Dudley and many subscriptions are off-red to a fund to aid in defending her. The Irish nationalists are circulating a report here to the effect that Mrs. Dudley was in the pay of the Engosh srovernment. and that she was sent to New York -by the Loodon police. The Iondon News, in it3 evening edition of to dav. contains the following .statements about Lucilia Dudley, in a letter signed 'One Who Knows": l have known Lucilia Dudley tor some time. She was born October 1, 1360. She is of medium height and she has a full nursemaid-like face and dark brown hair. She wor b!ue spectacles. I can't say that I know her character very weli. It would be difficult to give a decided opinio. thereon. Some per sons who know her assert that she is insane. They say this beeause she once attempted suicide, and was ar raigned therefor before a magistrate. I never noticed any signs of insanity in ber. I should rather say that she is eccentric, owing to her wonderful sensibility of feeling and the intensity of her nature, than ius.'ine in the true sense of the word inane.v The New promises to make public to-morrow some further details of the woman's history.
