by our citizens suitable to the hap

business should be suspended for, at

here at home in a suitable manner.
Somehow there ought to be something
done, it no more than to wake the

City Court.
Spencer Stanford, colored, was the
first case which was brought before the
Mayor this morning. He was charged
with being drunk and disorderly and a
fine of $5 was imposed for the offense.

The South Carolina Volunteers, a

passed through this city at about half
past 1 o'clock this morning, en route
for Washington, D. C. where they
will participate in the parade incident
to President Cleveland's inauguration.
It is a fine body of men and is the
only military organization from- that
citv. We understand that all the ex
pcnses.ot ,tteir. trip 'will. be. paid by the
white citizens of Charleston,1 who nave
contributed the necessary funds for
travel, food, lodgings and other heces
sary' incidentals.
To-lay'ri Fire.
At ai'opVnopn to-day the two stoty
frame dwelling on the corner of Bladen
and Third streets, owned and occupied
by Eyander McBrydc, colored, was
discovered to be on tire in the second
story. The alarm was at once given
and the firemen were quickly present,
bat owing in a great measure to the
strong breeze that was blowing at the
time the flames had gotten under sbch
headway that the roof and upper story
of the house were consumed. The
lower story and nearjy ail of t Tie furni
ture were saved. The flames ignited
and somewhat damaged an adjoining
j one story frame dwelliug. also the prop
erty of McBryde, and it was saved only,
by the best exertions of the firemen
The entire loss was ab ut $300, upon
which there was no insurance.

Prof. E. Van Laer lias had another
