A correspondent wants to know what we think of President Ciereland's ac tion in appointing two Senators from New York State and the possibility that he will carry out his ideas as to Civil Service reh rru in a way which will not be agreeable to many office seekers. Our reply is a very simple one. We voted for G rover Cleveland for President of the United States with the understanding and with the expec tation that he would exercise bis own good judgment, fearlessly and serenely, and therefore we have no criticisms to make on his action. We are so well satisfied with the fact that Graver Cleveland u President of the United States and that the Cabinet he bas se lected are all true and tried men, and honest, upright and unimpeachable Democrats, that we really care but lit tle from what section they came, whether from the Noith, the South, the East or the -Vest. Furthermore, and we say this for the future as well as for the present, we are willing to trust the judgment of President Cleveland and hi3 cabinet in all matters pertaining to public affairs, satisfied as we are that they will be actuated in all things by the highest and purest motives in any thing and everything that they may do Any body can catch a cold now- The troub e is to ict g . like the man who caught the bear. Gumming has been suffering from hav- inS bs chickens stolen from at Greenville Sound lie I his place has ha 1 in his employ at that place a colored man in whom be reposed great confidence. I short time since the colored man ! came t the city, when CapL Gumming, in the t'oursc of "versaiion. tld him that another colroJ man was coming i , to town m a tew dajs and would tell j isril about who stole the chickens. The a,.!, wii mn said hr?t ISttifl in renlv. . . - - r j 1 and shortly started on hU return to tic Sound, and that night he stole a saddle from Mr. George U. French, a mu'.e ffrom Mr. II . Northrop, and cleared out. It is supposed that lie went in the di rection of Onslow coittPty, though as yet nothing baa been beard from bim. Whether there will be any diminution in Capt. Cu m tiling's loss of chickens or not remains to be seen. Daily Another Railroad. We learn from the Norfolk Virainvw that Hon. R. R. Bridgers, President of i the Wilrmnirtnn Sr. WpMnn Rnil mad. " ' t has made a proposition to the aulhori- ties of Northampton and Bertie coun- j ties, in this State, to run a branch road from (iarysburg to Salmon Creek, up-n condition that the counties named will j subscribe onc-fonrth of the cost of con- ! structioo. or about 140.000. This j road has been one of the contemplated improvements of Eastern North Caro lina for a long time and a charter for Its construction was secured several years ago. Fifth Street HI. E. Church Tbe meeting at this church continue in undiminished interest and fervor. Since they commenced there haye been 57 accessions to the church and 67 con versions. There were about 20 went forward for prayers at last night's ser vice, and the church is thronged at each night meeting to such an extent tha it has become necessary to close and lock the doors before the service begins. If this precaution were not taken the building would be crowded to suffoca tion and a confusion would prevail which would greatly disturb the relig ious exercises. The meetings will bs continued throughout the remainder of this week and probably longer. A New Firm. The interest of Capt. R M. Mclntire. of this city, in the business ol Messrs R M. Mclntire & Co., of Durham, has been disposed of to a new firm, to be known as Ellis & Muse, consisting of two Wilmingtonians, Mr. W. F. Ellis and Mr. W. H. Muse, the latter, who is the eon of Mr. J. H. Muse, of the Star. baviDg been located at Durham, for some years a3 a partner In the old firm Mr. Ellis has for several years past been in the employ of Col. Jno. J. Hedrick, of this city, and is a young gentleman of good business habits and qualifications and one who staDds very high in the estimation of all who know bim. We wish these young gentlemen much success io their new venture. The Kiver. The improvements upon the river between this city and tbe ocean are progressing as favorably as could rea sonably be expected. There are two contracts which are now being filled. One of these, which is for stone, with Mr. George Z. French, if filled to the letter would be completed by the 15th of May next. In the completion of this contract there will be some delay, but there is every reason to believe that it will be completed by or before the 30ih ot June next The contract with Mr. Moore for digging, which was to have been completed by June 30th next, will bo somewhat delayed and will not be finished until later. When the dredging is completed there will be a channel of about 135 feet ;n width the plan proposed was to have the channel 270 feet wide over the shoalf. which will give a depth of 16 feet at dead low water. That th'13 channel, when com pleted, will be permanent and not lia b e to fill up again, Is manifest from the tact that the channels which have herc fore been cut in some of tbe most difij cult places in the river still retain their depth'. In the completion of these con tracts the appropriation lor the ini provement of the Cape Fear will be nearly exhausted. Personal Mr. Bruce Williams, of Pender county, was in the city this morning. Ex Mayor Fishblate has returned to the city Irom an extended visit to the Northern markets in the interest of his house. Mr. A B. Cook, who for a number ot iears has been in business in this city, will leave on tonight's train for Charlotte, N. C. where he will engage in business and make his future home. His family will accompany him to night. Senator W. H. Chadbourn and Mr. C..P. Lackey, Representative from this county, both returned to the city last night from Raleiuh. The session virtually- clo?cd yesterday, although ihcadj mrnment was not made until 19 oV.;ock to.day. Lu Goy Stednlan will probabiy arrive here lc.Dghtorllo mor. row morning. A Fine Effort. Our young townsman, Mr. Sol. C. Weill, delivered the oration on tbe an uiveraary of Washington's Birthday at Chapel Hill, and it was a marked success, which brought the young ora tor many congratulations from the iac ulty and students. The University Magazine, in speaking of Mr. Weill's effort, says: Mr. Weill spoke thirty minutes in a most forcible and impressive manner. His subject was "Individual Independ ence." the legacy bequathed us by Washington. Although he mentioned the name of Washington only once or twice, he could not have paid a higher tribute to his memory. No eulogy could have awakened greater lovo for the "father of our country;1' no speech could have .-howed more effectively our indebtedness to him. We cannot re frain from giving one or two thoughts as they impressed themselves upon our memory. All governments are subject to dissolution and de cay. No governments are powerful enough to supply the necessities of man for a long period of time. All govern ments have their ideal. The ideal of the Spartan was devotion; of the Atheuian, beauty. Tbe Greeks aspired to mental and physical, but not moral perfection. Tbe ideal of the Romans was war and bravery, but they were deficient in virtue. The ideal of the English is rank. The ideal of the American is the individual. This is a race of individuals, a nation of individ uals, a government of individuals. This is a part ol the legacy bequeathed us by Washington This is our crowning glory. To every Housekeeper a good substantial cook stove is an important necessity and our readers will find the best at Factory prices at Jacobi's Hardware Depot. t MARRIED.
