Harry Miner's -'Silver King" Co.. will appear at the Opera House in this city next Saturday night and in Matinee in tbe afternoon The coaipany is a strong one, and the play ba3 a world wide reputation. In Bpe&king of the play, the New York Herald says: When the powerful melodrama. The Silver Kinz." was produced at Wallaces Theatrelast winter, it scored an instant success, and for over luu nights tbe theatre was crowded with auditors, anxious to see the strongest play on the stage. The piece has more material, with literary ami aramauo merit, than any play for the last cen tury. Its success was bo great at tne Grand Opera House, New York, tho past two weeks, that Manager Henry E. Abbey ottered $30,000 caan lor tne play, and it was retused : and he then secured the present company lor two weeks return later in the season. Personal. On Saturday night last, Hamlet Holmes, olored, who lives about miles below the city at Town Creek, while laboring under an insane frenzy. set fire to his own house and would have perished in tbe flames had it not been lor the timely interference of a young colored man, who pulled him out of the burning building. Ho mes was badly burned about the head, but his fury bad not abated, for he went to the house o ene of his brothers and set it on fire and then set fire to the house and barn o another brother. At the latter p ace be caught all the geese be could find and threw them into the flames. He next went to the house of another colored man and tried (o gain ad mittance, but the door was barred against him, when he took an axe and burst it open, in doing which he split tbe band of the owner of the house nearly i s entire leagtb. He was finally captured, secured and taken to Smith ville and lodged in jail, where be now remains. Holmes has a wife and family and has heretofore been a quiet, peace able man. DRY GOODS, CARPETS, R. mch 12 Religious. The fervor of religious feeling at the meetings now being held at Fihh Street M. E. Church continues unabated. The church is thronged at each night's service and there is a remarkable ear nestness in the congregations. At the conclusion of the service .ast eight 36 penitents went forward for prayers and quite a number were concerted. Cane Presentation. We understand that Gen. M. P. Tay -lor, of this city, was presented las1 week with a handsome gold-headed cane by the Granville Grays, of Oxford, as a token of their gratitude to him for the services he has rendered the com pany in organising and drilling them. The presentation and reception speeches were very felloitious and the occasion was a pleasant one to all concerned. Fire In The Woods. All day yesterday there was a dense smoke to tbe eastward of the city, and good many oinders moved by tbe easterly winds were lodged in our streets and yards, showing that Ores were raging in the woods, not far from here. We learn to-day that the woods north of tho turnpike have been burned from a point near tbe Mineral bpring clear to tbe Sound. The fire extended in a northerly direction towards the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad .and as night approached the eastern horizon became lighted by the blaze, so that many thought that there was indeed a fire in the northeastern suburbs of the city. This gave rise to a false alarm when the bell of St. Mark's Church truck tor the regular night service, and for a few moments there was all the uproar and confusion incident to a re gular alarm of fire in the night time.
