A Phila delphia iron manufacturer, who was present, said the iron was superior to that made at Pittsburg. This is the first ever made in' the South and will open up an important business for Chattanooga. The iron can be made at several dollars per ton less than the Northern product. Instruction in mechanical trades has been introduced in the Maine State Re form School at Cape Elizabeth, and has enlisted the interest of many of tbe boys, who have made very good pro gress under it. The boys are carefully taught first the names and uees of tools, tod then how to use and keep them in order. Thy are also taught the names of tbe different kinds ot wood used in carpentry and how to distinguish tbem. Whitehead and Dr. Richard H. Lewis, of Raleigh, was e'ected. Dr. J. W. Jones, of Tarborough was unanimously elected President of the Board. The following resolution was ordered on record : Resolved, That the appropriation of $2,000 per annum, by tho State, for the benefit of this Board be drawn quarterly upon a requisition of the President of ihe Board 'in favor of the Treasurer.
