The deiondants pleaded guilty, and ex pressed their willingness to pay any fine, bat were determined not to have tbo operation performed, because it wa9 useless lor protection and very dangerous. Each parent was ordered to have the operation performed in a month. Tnese prosecutions are excit ing a very bitter feeling. We learn of the destruction by fire on Monday night of the store and stock of goods of Mr. G. H. Bryant. at Long Creek, in Pender county. No ! other damage was done, but the larpe , resiucuue oi mr. uruce w uiiams, omy a tow feet distant, narrowly escaped, ; The store and goods were fully insured ; yuhe North Carolina Home Insurance Company, represented in this city, by Messrs. Atkinson & Manning. The Origin ot the fire is a mystery. Poor and Needy. There are a great number of men out of employment in the city. Many of these have families depending upon i them for support, but as they cn get nothing to do in the present depressed condition of nearly all kinds of business there must necessarily bo a large f amount ot suffering which calls for the pity and assistance of our more favored people. We hope tor a change for the better in business matters within a short time, or the suffering will become very hard to bear. State Encampment. The annual eneaupnient of the North Carolina State Guard will be held this year at Asheville. It will beheld some time durins the month of July, and every company in the State will be or dered out. It is expected that the en campmenf will be a grand affair, and that the different military orani?:a tions in the State will prepare them selves for the occasion by faithful drill and will make every effort to turn cut with full ranks. We hope that our Wilmington boys will not be caught napping and we don't believe that they will. Bold Burglary. Mr. David J. Jenkins, who keeps a shooting galieiy on Front street, near the market, closed his place of business a little before 12 o'clock on Saturday night and wenf to his home on the corner of Wooster and Ninth streets. As ho is kept up by his business until a late hour on Saturday night, a young lady goes to his house to keep his wife company. This young lady, with a little daughter of Mr. Jenkins, occupied a room just across the passage from the room occupied by htm and his wife. He was arousd af.er having been asleep awhile by hearing the young lady in the adjoining room scream, and at once caught his pistol and ran to the door, but found it fast ened upon the inside. He then went for the key of his own room, and when he returned the intruder had fled. An investigation and the statement of the young lady show that the burglar effected an entrance through a rear window, and after taking a couple of dresses into the passgae and leaving them there, he re turned, when the lady awoke and screamed. The light which had been left burning in the room, had been ex tinguished and when she screamed tbe ruffian seized her with both hands by the throat and threatened to kill her if she made any more noise. She caught his hands and pulled them from her throat far enough to allow of another scream when the efforts of Mr. Jenk ins to enter the room alarmed the bur glar and he fled. It is not known whether the villain was a white or col ored man, but his feet made very large tracks. He succeeded in takinar noth ing from the house. Last night a thief broke into Mr. Jenkins1 gallery on Front Street and rummaged the place thoroughly, but succeeded in getting nothing. Ap pleton & Co.. we have received, through Mr. P. Heinsberger, of this city, who has tho work for sale, a copy ot "Roslyn's Fortune." a new novel by the North Carolina authoress whose nommc deplume is Christian Reid. We have read all of Miss Fisher's works but not one with more pleasure than this. It is not a great work, not one showing any particular profundity or research, but it is a light, simple, plcag ing iovo idyll, ono which was doubtless intended merely to charm away a few idlu hours and which has certainly proved a success in that re spect. Few readers who take it up will willingly consent to lay it aside until the end is reached. It is a Southern tale. The plot is pleas ing, the incidents picturesque and graphically portrayed and the book throughout is charmingly written, few novelists in this country having a more perfect acquaintance with or a more thorough command of Lhe English lan guage, in all its purity and beauty, than has tho author of "Roslyn's Fortune." Death of a Good Man. We are pained to announce the death ot Mr. John D. Carroll, which occur red at his late residence in Kenansville township, Duolin county, on tho even ing of the 93rd inst. Mr. Carroll had been for more than halt a century a member of the Baptist church and his heart, his purse and the open-handed hospitality of his house were always promptly and cheer fully responsive to the calls ot religfous duties.
