If anybody ought to feel disgruntled at the appointment of Pearson as Post master at New York it is not the peo ple ot the South. Goodness knows that there has been nothing to complain of thus far South of Mason and D.xon's line. We pin our faith to Grover Cleve land as we have pinned it to no man since the dark days of '63 when Iee surrendered at Appomaltx C. and it wiil take something mora than the appointment of a Republican as post master at New York to shake our faith in the man. We fear that President Cleveland was mistaken in at least one respect, when he authorized tbe remark that "the Democratic party is neither hypo critical, unpatriotic nor ungratelul." There are some in the South who do not fill the bill completely. In tbe ap pointment of Mr. Pearson as Postmaster at New York, a matter In which they can have but a very remote interest, they overlook the fact that lor tbe first tixe in twenty-five years the white peo ple of the South have a representa tion in the Cabinet and in the list of ministerial appointments. They lorget that ot the seven Cabinet offices two are Irom tbe South, while a third was taken from Delaware, a State which, although not 'classed as a Southern State, has always, been Southern in sentiment and leeling. They lorget also that thus far in tbe distribution of ether important offices the South has not only her share, but more than her share. And they forget another thing and a very important fact it is. Mr. Cleveland did not make this appoint ment without the advice and concur rence of his Cabinet, three sevenths of whom are Southern men. . . The retention of any waste matter in tbe system produces injury. Tbe col lection of "phlegm' or disease mucus in time of cold or throat affection should He promptly removed. The ceremonies in observance ol Passion week in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in this city have been very impressive. Since Ash-Wednesday services have been held every Wednes day afternoon at 4 o'clock, up to last Sunday (Palm Sunday) and on that day tbe catechumens, composed of a class of 6 boys and 5 girls, 14 years old and upward, were publicly exam ined in the church preparatory to their confirmation to-morrow night. This class has been thoroughly Instructed by the Pastor. Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, tor a year past, in tbe Cateohlsen and Scriptures touching the doctrines ot the church. During the present week (Passion week) special services have been held in the English language every after noon, at 4 o'clock, and on to morrow (Good Friday) there will be services and communion in German at 11 . . . r. o'clock and at mgbt service in jbnglish and confirmation. The long Lenten fast closes on Satur day and on Sunday the Church will appear in all of the glad rejoicing of happy Easter.
