Rich men are few and far between, tbat is. 8J we estimate rich men, but a man with an income of $1,000 a year is re aruVd as very wealthy. A farmer who has $100 laid by is ranked fore most among the capitalists of bis dis trict. .is charged that the site of "Bob" Ingersoil's modest cabin in New Mexi co was obtained from the Government through fraud, tbe land being taken up in the name, of a fictitious person, and the "proofs'' as to compliance with the law being furnished by Dorsey's cow boys and approved by one of Dorsey's friends in the Land Office. It is said that tbe ordinary conversa tion ol a man for a week would, if printed, fill a volume of 320 pages. It is estimated, on this basis, that the words that fell from Miss Sweet's lips dorins the week following the request fur her resignation of the Chicago Pension- Office would form a library of 781 volumes and they would be highly di verting reading. The story is told of an old colored man. Sam Dickersou, who has been a well-known character in Charleston, S. C, for many years, and who earned a precarious livelihood in tbe courts, that, when asked once to explain what tbe terms de facto and de jure meant, he gravely replied that the counsel must explain "de facts" of a case to the satis faction of "de jury.' --- - Ex President Davis, while owning a great deal of land is, eo far as ready money goe?, a poor man. One of his Mississippi plantations, which in ante bellum days brought him in $30,000 a year, he now rents for $2,000 and an other which formerly brought him in about $10,000 a year, he now rents for $1,000. Thus he has only $3,000 a year upon which to live and pay taxes. A lady not a resident of Lisbon, Da koto, bad a house and lot there, and the city ordered her to build a sidewalk by it. She neglected or refused to build it, and the city build the walk and sent sent her a bill for $100. Her gentle spirit waxed wroth and Bhc went there, tore down the house and took it away on the cars and told them they might have the old lot. "There now." The Government of the United States is about to have a new great seal. Strange as it may seem, it has been dis covered that the seal in use since tbe foundation of the Government is not designed in accordance with the law, which directed its construction. It is faulty in several respects, notably- in the number of arro-s in the claw of tbe eagle, also-in thesheild and in other re spects. The new seal is to. correspond la every particular with the statute. ; Mr. Oscar Wiide has again been writing of young ladies' waists with a ooddeaI of appreciative understand ing. War Rumors. There were rumors in the city this afternoon that hostilities had broken out afresh in Afghanistan between the Russian and Afghan forces, but they need 'confirmation. In tbe present con dition of relations between England and Russia upon the Afghan question, a declaration of war would not -be a surprise, and in tact we can hardly see how it can be prevented. Both Russia and England have gone too far to re treat gracefully and with honor. Two Attempts.. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning an unsuccessful attempt was made to rob tbe premises of Mr. Ana moos residing on Front, between Dawson and Wooster el reels. The rascal, was seen and heard as he entered the yard and was fired on by Mr. J. P. Quinn. a printer in this office, who was there in attendance on Mr- Ammoos, who was sick. A li-tie later, between 4 and 5 o'clock, some one entered tbe back door of the kitchen of Mr. Amos Perry's residence on Eighth, between Dock and Orange streets, but did not succeed in getting anything he having been beard and frightened off.
