Peanuts. By an enactment of the last legisla ture the weight of a bushel of peanut3 was fixed at 22 pounds. The standard weight was formerly 28 pounds to the bushel, and as tbe change in weight is not perhaps fully understood it would be well tor buyers to be careful and not make themselve liable to the penalty of the law. Southern Baptist Convention. The Southern Baptist Conyention will meet at Augusta, Georgia,on Wed nesday, May 6th, 1855. Tho conven tion sermon will be preached by Rev. J. L. M.Ccrry, D. D., LL. D.. of Vir ginia. We learn that Rev. Dr. Pritchard will attend the Convention, although the First Baptist Church has not yet selected any delegates for the occasion. They may be selected, however, at to morrow night's meeting or even on Sunday and then be in season for at tendance. The convention was organized at Augusta, Ga., in 1845, and at this meet ing, its fortieth anniversary, an histor ical sermon will be preached by Rev J. L. Burrows, D. D., of Virginia Before tbe organization of this body all the Baptists of the United States conducted their missionary operations through tbe agency of the Baptist Tri ennial Convention. The agitation o' the salary question and the decision of the northern brethren not to appoint a slaveholder to the office of a foreign missionary, led to the withdrawal of the help of southern churches. The delegates appointed by the southern churches met in Au gusta in May, 1885. and form ed the Southern Baptist Convention The convention is a missionary body composed of delegates from Alabama, Arkansas. Florida, Georgia. Kentucky. Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Mis souri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the Indian territory, and represents a constituency of 552 district associations, 13,573 churches, 7.432 ministers and 948.184 members. These are exclusive ly whites. The colored Baptists in these Siates number 832.250. There wiil be more than 500 delegates. The Southern Baptist convention bas two boards the Foreign Mission board, located in Richmond, Va , and tbe Home Mission board, located in At lanta, Ga. It bas under ita care, also, tbe Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky.. and tbe Sunday School raper. Kind Words, published at Macon, Ga. The Foreign Mission Board has 95 missionaries in China, Africa, Italy, Mexico and Bra zil. For sometime past some of the dry- goods dealers in this citv have been ; nil96ing articles from their stores which COuld ot be accounted Icr in any legiti- mate Way. Some ot the articles missed were valuable and costly siiks, satins and laces. It is now ascertained that they were stolen by a party of colored shoplifters who have been plying their oration successfully fur several weeks. Strong suspicion points io the guilty parties and steps have been taken to have the thieves bivught to justice. The early morning hours have generally been selected as the time for their work and this fact has pointed strongly to four or fhfei colored women who have made a practice recently ot visiting tbe ! stores from which the goods have been stolen at that time or the cay. Lateu. Since the above was writ. ten and in type, officer C. H. Strcde. armed with a search warrant, made a raid upon the premises occupied by M.tg Fisher, colored, on Eighth street, between Brunswick and Hanover, where he found large quantities of stolen goods. He arrested Mag Fisher and her daughter Sophy Fisher and took them to the Sheriff's office, with as much ot the pluoder as he could carry. These he left in charge of an officer and returned with a dray to re ceive the rest of tbe stolen property, In the meantime many of the mtr. chants and clerks in the dry goods trade had assembled at the sheriff's of fice and a large portion of the first lot of good- were identified. When the dray returned with the second load there was considerable excitement and when the large bundle in which the goods were wrapped was opened there was an immediate identification Of property by many of those present The goods were of ail kinds and quali tie?, from the most coinmou calico to the finest silks and satios. Some ol the property had the cost marks on so that they were easily identified, while other poitions were in such shape that it was impossible to identify them. The property and marks showed that tbe houses of Messrs. M. M. Katz, John Taylor, J. Samsou. A. Shrier, B. Solomon. R. M. Mclntire, II. II. Munson and Brown & Roddick had been made to suffer by these shop lifters These robberies have been commit ted by a party of six colored women, who have made a practice of visiting the different stores in the morning hour?, when only one o two clerks were in attendance, so that they had a. better opportunity for committing thei" depredations, with much less liability of detection. The women invariably wore ebawls and carried baskets into which they could deposit their plunder where it could be concealed by the shawls. There are others of the gang who will probably be arretted to-day and whose residences wiil probably when searched, show a much larger amount of plunder than has already been secured.
