THEBUKIALOF OUKOEAD
BY COLONEL O'nARA, OF KENTUCKY. !
The muilled dram's sod roli shall beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No jjinre on life's parade shall meet
The brave and daring few ;
On Fame's eternal cainping ground,
1 heir silent tents are spread.
And glory guards with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.
No answer of the foe's advance,
Now swell9 upon the wind;
No troubled thoughts at midnight
haunts,
Ot loved ones left behind;
No visions of the morrow's trite,
The warrior's dreams alarms
No braying horn or screaming fife
At dawn shall eall to arms.
Theii shivered swords are red with
rust.
Their plumed bats are bowed.
Their haughty banner, trailed in dust,
Is now their martial shrcud.
Ant! plenteous funeral tears have
washed
The red stains from each brow,
And their proud forms in battle gashed,
Are free Irom anguish now.
The neighing steed, the flashing blade,.
The trumpet's stirring blast
The charge, the dreadful cannonade.
The din and shout are past;
Nor war's wild note, nor glory's peal.
Shull turn with fierce delight
Those breasts that never more shall
feel
The rapture of the fight.
Like the dread Northern hurricane
That sweeps his broad plateau ;
Flushed with the triumph yet to gain,
Came down the serried foe.
Our heroes felt the shock, and leapt
To meet them on the plain;
And long, the pitying sky hath wept
Above our callant slein.
Sons x)f our consecrated ground,
Ye must not slumber there,
Where stranger step and tongue re
sound Along th - heedless air;
Your own proud land's heroic soil
Shall be your fitter grave;
She claims Irom war hi3 richest spoil
The ashes of her brave !
So 'neath their parent turf they rest,
Far Irom the gory field ;
Borne to a Spartan mother's breast,
On many a bloody shield ;
The sunshine of her native sky
Smiles sadly on them here.
And kindred hearts and eyes watch by
The hero's sepulchre.
Rest cn, embalmed and sainted dead!
Dear as the bloody grave;
No impious footstep here shall tread
The herbage of your grave ;
Nor shall your glory ba forgot,
Whi.e lame her record keeps.
Or honor points the haliow'd spot,
Where valor proudly sleeps.
Yon marble minstrel's voiceless tone.
In deathless songs shall tell.
When many a vanished age hath flown.
The story how ye fell;
Nor wreck, nor change, nor Winter's
blight.
Nor Time's rnmorseless doom,
Shall dim the ray of holy light
1 hat gilds your glorious tomb.
Thirty Years In a Chair.
There died recently in Boston a crip
ple whose case attracted the attention
of physicians, scientists and specialists,
all over the country. Thi3 man for
twenty-nine years had not moved from
his chair by day or night. WThen he
was six years old his spine was injured
by an accident, and his neck, body
and limbs became paralyzed. He
could not move a joint in them- All
his fingers became disjointed, and the
only moveable joint in his frame was
one thumb. He could not turn his
head a hairsbreadth. He sat in his
chair near a window, and by an in
genious contrivance of mirrors he was
enabled to see what was going on out
ol doors and in the room.
At night his chair was tipped back a
little, and in this position he got his
sleep. Any attempt on his part to
move his limbs caused him the great
est agony. He suffered pain nearly all
the time, and everybody wonders he
lived so long in this horrible condition.
Many prominent physicians studied
his case and gave it up as unaccounta
ble. He was so remarkably patient and
devout in the midst ot his sufferings
that he won notice by serving as a text
irom which a large number of sermons
have been preached by different clergy
men who had visited him. fe was
forty-seven years old. A young sister
of his devoted her hie to taking care ol
him.
Origin ot Carriages.
The oldest carriages, used by the
ladiesot England, were called whirli
cotes These became unfashionable after
Ann, the daughter of Charles IV., and
quecu of Richard II., about the end ot
the lourteenth century, showed the
ladies how .gracefully they could ride
on a side saddle. Coaches were first
known in England in the year 1530.
They were introduced from Germany
by the Earl ot Arundel. They came
into general use among the nobility in
the year 1G05. The celebrated Duke ol
Buckingham was the first who rode in
a coach and six horses ; to ridicule this
pomp, the Earl of Northumberland put
eight horses to his carriage. Coaches
let to hire were first established in
London in 1625. There were only
twenty of them kept at the principal
inns. In the year 1637 there wee filty
hackney-coaches; in 1654 thero were
two hundred; in 1694 thev were limited
to seven hundred; and in 1755 to eight
hundred; there are now eleveu hundred
