' i H A gentleman of this city who witness ed the performance of the Bijou Opera Company at Sumter a few nights ago tells us that they give a really delight ful entertainment. The troupe is a rather email one, it is true, but some of the voices are very line indeed, especially those of the sophrano and the baritone. Our people may expect a genuinely gojd entertainment to-night and to-morrow night. Nor. barque Mindet, Abraham sen hence, arrived at London May 25th. The Bijou Opera Troupe arrived this morning and will give "Mascot" at the Opera House to night. Base Ball, and Summer underwear go together. Get the latter from Dyer, who has a Gnc line. f The thermometer in this office regis tered 84 degrees to-day at 3 o'clock, same as yesterday. There were two cases for trial before the City Court this morning but they were continued until to-morrow. Sunday's News and Observer reached us safely this morning. Where it has spent the interval it would be hard to say. New Hanover Superior Court, Judge Gudger presiding, will convene at the Court House in this city on Monday next. There is a terrible disease prevailing at Langworlhy, Jones County, Iowa, which causes death in a few minutes. The patient is taken with a slight sore throat, the soreness then goes to the lungs and from there to the spine, when death follows. It entirely baffles the physicians, some calling it a sort of "ship" fever, caused by impure water. . "John A. Logan, Senator Iroai Illi nois, will be the Republican candidate for the Presidency four years hence," Jas. G. Blaine is reported to have said, when he heard of the victory of the Re publicans at Springfield. He was un affectedly delighted at the news of Logan's success. The pay of a Russian army officer is very small. A full general gets from SI, 500 to $2,000 a year in our money, according to length of service; a lieutenant-general from $1,172 to $1,750; a major-general from $780 to $1,390, and a colonel-commanding a three bat talion regiment. 2.400 strong, gets $504. The Madagascar Government has passed laws prohibiting the manufac ture or sale ot rum in the district of Imerina. under a penalty for each of fense of ten oxen and $10. We hear of a coap'e of gentlemen who hired a horse and buggy lasSun day with which they took a ride to the Sound. While there, enjoying the pleasures of the sea breeze, some wag quietly changed the wheels, putting the rear wheels on the forward axle and vice versa. When ready to return the gentlemen started for home, not notic ing what had been done, but as there was considerable laughter among the bystanders, they became convinced that something was the matter and after driving a short distance they alighted and thoroughly examined the buggy to see what was amiss, but as they could discover nothing out of the way, they got into the buggy and drove home. The proceedings ot this body since our last report have not been of interest to the general public, although of im portauce to the order and as such of value to the cause of temperauce. Sev eral changes in the constitution have been proposed, but these will have to be submitted to tbe future considera tion of the High Tent before their adop tion. The Tent has held three sessions daily since it convened on luesday morning and has accomplished a large amount of important work. The dele gates are working men and havu their business systematized so that their labors are com paratively easy, and the work has been performed without any annoying delay. It is now thought thai they may conclude their labors by a session to- niorrow night, after returning from the excursion down the river on tbe Pass- pint during the day. in which case they will adjourn and return to their re spective homes Friday morning. A Full Baud. The Wilmington Cornet Concert Club has received lately several addi tions to its membership and is now the largest in point of numbers as well as best in musical ability in the State. Ex-Governor Jams, in company with Mayor Hall, rode out to Oakdale Cemetery this morning, to visit the last resting place ot Capt. Guilford L. Dudley, who was private secretary to the Governor when our distinguished visitor occupied the gubernatorial chair. Thence they returned and the ex-Governor, with a party composed of eome of our most-prominent citizens, embark ed on board the si earner Louise, which had been chartered for the purpose, and visited the creosote works some of the distilleries, the dry duck and other places of interest and impor tance along our river front. This occu pied the morning bouts and at a little afternoon they steamed down the river to iuspect the improvements on the lower Cape Fear and the dredging op eratious, and thence to Smithville where a banquet was provided for them at the Hotel Brunswick.
