The girl who might say yes when asked to marry, with the mental reser vation that if anything better comes along she will contrive not to keep her word, will think twice about it if she has to go through with such a form. Marriaie engagements are frequently too lightly entered into and too lightly set aside. The engagement should be nearly as sacred a contract as the mar riage itself and it should be such an en gagement that both parties would be proud to have it known among all their common acquaintances. In reality, the girls cojuDrising a company of the spectacu'ar order are a quiet and sedate collection of women ol all ages. Young girls are also found among t4iem ; occasionally there is one who imagines that tights are the first steps to theatrical fame, so, though much against their inclinations, and of ten against their parents1 advice, they join a, company and fondly imagine that in a year or so their names, in large type, will adorn the great posters on the wall. It is unnecessary to state that in ninety-nine cases out of 100 they are doomed to disappointment. They join one company after anoth er, grow less attractive as they become older, and they finally bring up as dan Gers of serio-comic vocalists iu variety theatres. Occasionally they manage to work their way up to the top round of the ladder as premiere danseuses or members of opera companies, but these instances arc quite rare. The first-nighters and front row pat rous mentioned above will probably be pained at the disclosure that probably three-fourths ot the ballet girls are mar ried. They are often accompanied by their husbauds, who travel with the company, and occasionally they leaye their better halves in the Old World. Off the stage the average ballet g rl is a plain, matronly woman, possibly the mother of two or three children. She dresses plainly, and on the street would be taken for anything but the gay and handsome lairy, all bedecked with sprangles and winning smiles. A manager of one of these companies in conversation recently said: "These girls are paid all sorts of salaries from $6 per week to about and some times $10. We generally furnish them with their travelling expenses, and hotel nccommodations, and they manage to save a little something, provided they are not too extravagant. I know of one case where a girl who travels in my company supports her husband and three children, who are in Italy. Her salary is only $10, and somehow she manages to save 89 every week, which she sends to Italy with great regularity. Other women in my company are ob liged to draw their salaries ahead, and when the week is over they have noth ing left. They spend ali their money in jewelry and gew-gaws; but very little of it goes for extravagant dress ing. We furnish them with their stage wardrobe, but as a rule they furnish themselves with tights out of their own earnings Ctevcland Herald. The Godfather of the Camel lias. Ferdinand VI. of Spain, while suffer ing under the hereditary melancholy from which ho subsequently died, was pacmg to and fro one December day in the year 1739 in- his bed-room in the Palace lloyal of Madrid. He was in terrupted by the entrance of Maria Theresa, his queen, who bounded gayly into the room. In her hand she held a flower of dazzling whitenes?, which she presented to her husband. "A beauti ful flower, but scentless," exclaimed the kin?, folding in his arms the wife whom he passionately loved. "It is the new flower ol the Philippines." said the queen. I The flower which Maria Themsa ro ught to her husband a century and a ball ago had been presented to ner the dav nrevious bv a Jesuit missionary just returned from the Indies. Craving an audience from his sovereign, he brought his offering, a small shrub with glossy green leaves, on which blossomed two magnificent white flow ers, and which be bad brought from the Isle of Luzon, one of the Philippine group. It was about three feet in height and grew in a vase of mother of pearl. The Jesuit donor was named Camellia.
