The two new cruisers, the building ol which Congress authorized last winter, are to be named Neiv Jersey and Baltimore, in honor of Congress men McAdoo, of New Jersey, and Talbott, of Maryland, wh put through Lhe appropriation lor the new boats. Miss Cleveland has sent to her pub lishers in New York the title of her furthcoming hook. It is ''George Eliot and other Studies," and is taken in part from the lirst, chapter, which is a paper on "George Eiiot's roetry." The book is expected to be given to tho public in about a fortnight. - Mrs. Ohm, who professes to cast out devils and perform other feals com- niuuly regarded as superhuman, resides near Lacketon, Ind., and is regularly consulted by persons who believe them selves under thj influence of a malign spirit. If there is any doubt as to whether or not the secretary was justified io hid 'act it will doubtless be dispelled by the knowledge that the Chinese ambassador was ill at the time and that Mr. Bayard called for the pur pose of expressing his regret. It is eighteen years since Nilsson has been heard on the boards of a French opera house. Managers there will not pay the prices which the stars of opera can get in New York and London. They set their faces against the system. and strive more for good average exe cution than for the glitter and glamor of one-part opera. Patti, too, goes elsewhere, and gets in one week half as much as she could earn in the Paris opera in a wholes twelvemonth. Now is the season for painting your houses. On Friday night last Mr. Jerry Hewlett, at Greenville Sound, was sprinkling powder on a board and flashing it for the purpose of killing flies when, unfortunately, a spark of fire got into the powder horn and exploded it, by which ho was burned quite severely about the face and hands. Powder is dangerous stuff to handle. The Leading Clothier. Wc do and can afford to sell cheaper than any other house in the city, and we make the same liberal offer to every body ; it any article bought of us is not. exactly as represented, or is in any re spect unsatisfactory it may be exchange ed or we will promptly refund in cash the price paid for it. Examine our goods at your homes, compare their quality and pries withgoods from other stores and you will see why our trade continues to grow and prosper. Shriek, the Old Reliable Clothier, 114 Market street. t Base Call. The match game of base ball between the Seasides, of thecity, and the Nation als, of Goldsboro, which was played on Saturday afternoon at tho grounds oj the former club, resulted in a victory for the latter nine, if we may call that a victory in winch the winners had four professions while the vanquished play ed with an entirely home team. Kooch ogay and Kurtz, tho professionals of the Seasides, were both unable to play ; the former on account ot a lamo finger andthe latter in consequence of a sprain ed ankle, while the Nationals had Latouche, Frank, Wiiliams and Chap man as professionals. Besides these they also had one player who was not an actual resident of Goldsboro, which was a violation of the League rules. It seems that the game was played, so tar as the Nationals were concerned, in direct violation of three of the pro visions of the State League, as follows: They have played with four profession als, when entitled to only two; they haye played with men not actual resi dents of the place, aud they have hired men who were in the employ of other nines in the State. Of course the game Saturday, as well as that of Friday, was played by the Seasides under pro test, and their defeat in the last game will not count against them in the count for the championship. There was some good playing on both sides, but the Seasides made a number of almost inexcusable errors, which were more tho cause of defeat than through any remarkably good playing of their opponents The playing was rather loose ou both sides. We do not believe in hiring profes sionals at all, and hope that in the next season's games tho different clubs com posing the State League will play with their own talent. In connection with this matter nnd as embodying our ideas ot tho question we give the following, which we clip from the Goldsboro Ar gus: "It seems to us that the "profession al battery" business is an innovation, anyway, upon the true spirit of base ball in our State; for it is tantamount to the clubs of the various cities and towns of our State saying to one an other. "We can hire a professional 'battery' that can beat any profession! a: battery1 that you can hire." We would glady welcome a return to the old way of playing ball; when Goldsboro and afterwards Newbern had the leading of the State. In lho?c days we hired no professional 'batteries' and we had a heap more real fun and glory, too real State glory. Another extract, taken from the same paper, says : The games between the Nationals-so-called and tho Seasides at Wil mington on Friday and yesterday are not looked upon in this city as State League games; nor do our citizens con sider that the Nationals proper played the beasiues, nor do the Nationals, not one ot them, approve of the games as playett ; nence they have concluded to public! v exonerate themselves and re deem the honor ot their club at once by taking such step's as they may con sider necessary at their next meeting. The club that plaved Wilmington un der the name ot National was made up of six arrangers and only three of our boys, and those three played merely to protect the finances ot the club.
