The London Times recently spoke of the black houses of the natives on the Scotch Islands of Syke and the Western Ulands as conflned, dark, and un healthy. A Highlander in answer writes to that journal tbat he passed his early years in one of these primitive dwellings or hute, and that their venti lation, although draughty, is good, and the inhalation of the peat smoke, with hieh the atmosphere is charged, pro tects the lungs from consumption and wher parasitic germ diseases. When Mr. Fawcett, the late Tost master-General of England, returned to health after lying for a time at death's door, he stated that his illness had at least freed him from the fear of death. In the most serious part of his trouble he felt no anxiety, and did not fear, as he had in health, that the end would be preceded by great pain or a severe struggle. He felt that his heart would slowly and, without his knowl edge, cease to beat. It is interesting to know that one at least of the best traditions of classical Greece has lasted down to these latter days. This is the readiness of rich cit izens to perform public service at their private expense. The University of Athens boasts an endowment at this moment of more than $12,000,000. There is a hospital at Athens, too, en, tertaining more than a hundred aged brothers, which was founded by a sin gle wealthy Greek citizen. LOCAL NEWS. INDEX TO NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. F C Miller A. Lippincott & Co., thepublishers, t hroug h Mr . Heinsberger. of this city, we have received a copy of Vain Forebodings, a German Novci, translated by Mrs. A. L. Wister. The announcement of anything undtr translation by Mrs. Wister always creates a pleasant sense of expectation, and in this instance there is no disap pointment. Vain Forebodings will be foiiBd one of the most exchanting of the series. The interest is caught in the first chapter of the work and is held undiminished until the last page is turned. The book is handsomely bound in cloth and can.be had at Hemsberger's Call at Jacobi's Hardware Depot and examine his fine assortment oi fishing poles and lines. t Yesterday's Excursion. Notwithstanding the threatening as pect of the weather yesterday morning, the excursin on the Passport of the Ger mania Cornet Band came off as adver tised. No doubt that .many were de torred from going on account of the wea'her, but there was a very good party, among whom were many ladies, who concluded to risk it, and we are glad to know that they had a good time. The rain caused some annoyance and discomfort, as a matter ot course, but the most of the party endured the inconvenience like true philosophers and went in for enjoyment despite the rain. The Band.played some of their best music and we are assured by those entirely eompetent to judge that their efforts reflected great credit upon them selves and upon their instructor, Prof. Herndon. They will have another excursion at an early day when we hope that they may be favored with the yery best of weather and a magnificent party. The Germania Cornet Band, . as its name would indicate, is composed exclusive ly of the young German element of our population. They are worthy young men, good natural musicians and are bound to be a credit to our city. Personal. Mr. W. B. Hocut, of Rocky Point, was in the city to-day. Rev. R. T. The Standard Dramatic Company heli the boards of the Opera House last night to a good audience, considering the inclemency of the weather. Under the Gas Light was the piece presented and it was rendered quite creditably. To-ight they will appear in Divorce, when it is hoped they may have the en couragement of a crowded house to greet them. Now is the season for painting your houses. It will be a surprise to all who have not seen them. The arrangement of the articles is very appropriate, giving most beautiful appearance to the Hall. For the Seasides.
