Personal. Col. C. Goddard.of New York, repre senting the minority interest in the Carolina Central R. R., was her yester day and this morniu2, in company with Maj. J. C. Winder, the General Mana ger, lelt for a tour of inspection on the line of the road. Quick Work. It took the Wilmington & Weldon foce of hands just four hours Wednes day to change the entire guage of the road from Goldsboro to Smithfield twenty-three miles. The work of chang ing the guage commenced at 6 o'clock, a. m., and at 10 o'clock was finished. Capt. Divine has returned to the city and he tells us that the trains are now running regularly over the road, mak ing connection with trains on tho Wil mington & Weldon R. R. Opera House. "Black Diamonds" was presented at the Opera House last Saturday night to a small, but appreciative audience. To night Bartley Campbell's American drama entitled "Divorce," will be pre sented when it is hoped that a full house may be present as the troupe is deserv ing of patronage and the price of ad mission is placed within the reach of all. . The company will remain here a few days longer and will present new at tractions at each night's entertainment. The first case for tbe Mayor's con sideration this morning was that ot A. Schriver, charged with disorderly con duct. He was discharged. Cad Lowery, colored, charged with disorderly conduct, was fined $5. Mar garet Davis, colored, for disorderly con duct, was fined $10. One married colored couple, for in dulging in a little domestic infelicity in the streets, were fined $5. Educational. At the recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest College, it was yoted unanimously to receive -as students all sons of ministers, of what ever denomination, freo of charge. The Endowment Fund of the College, amounting to $102,000, is all invested in first mortgage bonds on real estate, and no money is loaned for more than cue half of the taxable value of the property given in mortgage. Nearly all of the money thus invested draws interest at the rate of 8 per cent, per annum. For JLake Waccamaw. The Sunday School connected with the Second Presbyterian Church will make an excursion to Lake Waccamaw to-morrow. If the weather should prove favorable there will undoubtedly be a large party who wiil avail them selves of the opportunity to spend the day in the country getting rid for the time of the heal and dust of the city to ramble upon the shores of the bcati ful Waccamaw. The management are making every effort looking to the com fort and pleasure of the excursionists. Ou Friday Next. The excursion gjtten up by the ladies ot Front Street M. E. Church, which was postponed last week on account o tho unfavorable weather, will tnke place ou Friday, the 19th inst. The Passport has been chartered for the oc casion, and she will take the excursion ists to the Rocks, to Smithville. to the forts and to sea a short distsnee should the waves not be too rough. A good dinner will be be served on the boat, and the management will do rill in their power to insure a good time. Fare for the round trip 50 cents; dinner 50 cents, and five dollars' worth of fun gratis. lo-Morrow's ICxcursion. On Tuesday, the 10th inst.,whicti wfll be to-morrow, according to Turner's Almanac, the Cornet Concert Club will give their second excursion of the season on the steamer Passport, and will visit the Rocks. Smithville and the Forts. The club have made every pre paration necessary for a good time and to give their guests a day of real pleas ure. The music both vocal and instru mental, will be excellent, the selections having been made with extreme care so as to render nothing but the very best. Theciub deserve the most liberal patron age as they are doing everything possi ble to make the day pleasant and agree able. The Obsequies. Tbe funeral ot Mrs. A. Weill, whose decease we chronicled on Saturday last, took place at the late residence of the deceased, on South Front street, at 10 o'clock this forenoon Rev. .S. Men delsohn officiated and the obsequies were conducted in accordance with the rules of ths Hebrew Church. Thence the remains were conveyed to Oakdale Cemetery for interment, followed by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends in a procession consisting ot 27 carriages. The pall bearers were Messrs. Sol. Bear, A. Lehman, ot Goldsboro, S. Blumenthal. G. Rosen thal, M. M. Katz, A. Shrier, S. H. Fishblate, S Solomon, I. Greenewald, T. M. Emerson, T. C. James. F. W. Kerchner and H. Brunhild, of Rich mond. Va. A Nice Trick At the house of Hook & Ladder Com pany, No. 1, the gates ot the stalls for tbe horses have been fixed so as to be opened by electricity. By this means the alarm coming over the wire from the City Hall opens the gates so that tbe horses may run out and take their rej spective positions by the side of the pole ot thp track, and immediately un der the drop harness. S Collins, son of Air. James W. Collins, figures very highly. Mr. Collins was award ed the first medal, for declamation. We copy from the Democrat the para graph relative to this : On Thursday night the prominen feature was tho contest for a Koda offered for the beat declaimer. The exercises of this evening were opened by a Grand March by Misses Mamie Perry and Bettie Hill. Mr. Paul Randolph was the first declaim er, and righf nobly did ho render 'Soc rates Snooks.' The young men will excuse me it I do not mention all. Those meat applauded were Messrs R. B. Peters. L. M. Pittmau, A. L. Bur rington, H. D. Sheppard, Z. J. Whit field, J. E. Hancock, J. B.
