Of this number five arc barques and one is a brig. There were an unusual number of flat loads of wood in the docks to-day and it sold slowly at very reasonable prices. The girls in their white dresses and the trees in their green leaves make up a very pleasant summer to look at here abouts. The city cart was out this morning gothering up stray hogs that have been permitted to roam the streets, and quite a number were captured. This cooler condition of the atmos phere should have its effect in making up a good audience at the Opera House to-night. A good play will be presented. Those two excellent Raleigh papers, the Farmer and Methanic and the Stale Chronicle, have been consolidated and will appear in the new form at an early day. At 3 o'clock this afternoon the ther mometer in this office registered 81 de gress, five degrees aboye summer heat and seven degrees lower than at the same hour yesterday. The rains which fell yesterday and last night seem iu have been pretty general in this section. The Signal Office in this city reports U inches of rainfall between 5:55 o'clock yesterday afternoon and 2 o'clock this afternoon. At a very small cost, you can get your old shirts repaired, and made as well as new again at the Wilmington Shirt Factory, No. 27 Market street, J. Elsbach. Prop. tf In consequence ot the storm there was no performance at the Opera House last night. The company will play to-night, however, when the drama of "th Two Orphans," wh'ich was an nounced for last night, will be presented. The Mexican Government has set our own Government a good example in holding Citizen Jay Gould strictly to the terms of his contract. A concession - valuable railway privileges has been declared forfeited becauseMr. Gould did lot build the specified length of road per 5ear he agreed to do. There were huayy showers of rain last night, accompanied by frequent peals of thunder) and flashes of lights ning, but we have not heard of any damage being done. It rained nearly ail night and the weather was agreea bly cooler after the intense heat of yes terday. The Young Catholics, Society made an excursion down the river on the Passport this morning. They had quite a large party and have had the most pleasant day for an excursion there has been this week thus far. A nice day, -a nice party and without donbt a nice time has made the excursion all that could be desired. Indications. For the South Atlantic States, local rains, followed by fair weather, winds generally shitting to Easterly with slight changes in temperature. The Boy Clipper Plow has earned a reputation of being the best ever used and are pronounced perfect by the best farmers. Sold wholesale and retail at the factory agency, Jacobi's Hardware Depot. t Sorely we must not forget our "Ameri can Blotter Tablet." we could bardfy do without it, as we will write often daring our travels. je 1 d& w 1m The Crops. The reports from all the sections of the country round abont Wilmington are that the crops are growing finely. In some localities there has been 30 much rain as to retard working the crops and the grass in consequenee has almost gained the mastery, bnt the farmers are working like beavers and hope to have their crops cleared out in a short time. Base Ball. New nines are springing up daily in tbecity, thc last of which we have heard being the ' Insurance Club" and the "Printer's Club." The latter, we learn, propose to challenge the former for a match game to be played within a short time. A Horned Frojr. All those who are anxious for a day's pleasure will bear in mind that the ex cursion on the Passport gotten up by the ladies ot Front Street M. E. Church will take place to-morrow. Their ex cursions are always pleasant occasions, as hundreds who have attended them can cheerfully testify. If the weather should prove favorable and we hope tbat it will there will undoubtedly be a large party, and we predict for them a day of genuine njoytuent. Yesterday's Game. The match game of base ball yester day afternoon between the "Sea Gull" and the "Benevolent" nine, was cut short at the expiration of the fourth inning in consequence of the rain, the score then standing at 16 for the former to 11 for the latter. The game was gotten up for the benefit of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, and there was a very good attendance, although it was not so large as could be wished It is probable that the game will be com pleted at some future time. Musical, p The concert of vocal and instrumen tal music to be given under the direc tion of Prof. E. Van Lear, which has been heretofore spoken of in these col umns, will come off sometime during next week. The entertainment wiil be tor tho benefit of the Cornet Concert Club, and the best amateur talent of the city has been engaged tor the occasion. Prof. G M. Ilobbs, of Clinton, whose arrival is announced in our personal column, will remain here and take a part in the concert. It is intended that this shall be the musical event of the season and no pains will be spared to mako it a success. Merited Praise. We gladly copy from the Goldsboro Argus the following words of praise for our young townsman, Prof. E. A. Alderman : On all sides we hear nothing but cx pressions ot pleasure and satisfaction over the action of our excellent board of Graded School directors in electing Prof. Edwin A. Alderman, late 1st assistant, to the position of principal of our Graded School, recently made vacant by the resignation of Pro fessor E. P. Moses. Mr. Aldermau has for three years filled the position of 1st assistant in our school with much crerlit to himself and to the entire satis faction ot the board of directors and the patrons of the school. With our knowledge of his ability, and supported as he is by such a capable corps of teachers, we feel satisfied that the school will hold its own and progress. Citv Court. There was only one case for the Mayor's consideration thi3 morning, bnt it was one of much importance. Rev. Edward Merrick, colored, who is not a D. D.. but claims to be an M. D., was arrested yesterday for being drunk and disorderly, and the evidence was so strong that he was sent below for 30 days. Merrick claims to be a preacher and has two two churches in Bladen county and one in the neighbor hood of Rocky Point. When in the city he invariably makes his home in the Hollow and keeps drunk nearly all the time he remains here. He has been arrested many time? Mr. Gaston M Ilobbs, of Clinton, Sampson county, who will be remem bered by many of our citizens as a fine violinist, arrived in the city last night and registered at the Purcell House. We had the pleasure to-day ot meet ing with our friend. Dr. E A. Gasque, ot Marion, S. C, who is in the city with the Pitlmclto Base Ball Club, ot which he is a member. Dr. Gasque was formerly connected with the Marion Index, of which his brother is the editor and proprietor, but he has forsaken journalism and established himself in dentistry at Marion, having recently graduated at the dental department of the University of Pennsylvania. Pt. Caswell Higrh School. A friend, who was present on the oc casion, writes us that the closing exer cises of the Point Caswell High School took place on last Friday evening, June 12th, and it was a very creditab'e affair to both teacher and scholars. The ex aminations were highly satisfactory in every particular. The exercises con sisted of spaeches. dialogues and essays, the rendition of which -proved both progress and training. The representa tion of "Faith, Hope and Charity" was unexceptionally good. The "Curfew," by Miss Katie Paddison, and the dialogue, "Masterpiece1 by Miss Minnie Newbury Mis3 Howard Paddison and Master Willie Vollers were received with repeated applause aud showed plainly tho appreciation of the audience, who feel indebted to the principal, Miss Wren, for the great proficiency shown by her pupils. After the exercises closed there was a dance given in honor of Misses. Katie Vollers and Lillie Rulfs, ot Wilming ton. The committee, Messrs. W. E. Black, R. J. Jeffords, J. H. Vollers and Jas. Hollingsworth, d:d all in their power to make the affair pleasant to all and it suffices to say that their efforts were crowned with an absolute success. Now is the "eason tor painting your houses.
