The D aili KEYIEW. VOL. IX. WILMINGTON. N. C. TUESDAY. JUNE 23. 1885. NO. 145. Mr. Fronde, the historian, recently addressed to Dr. Newman a letter in which he says that "the principle ot gravitation is only looked upon now as a hypothesis by all careful minds." and further, that it would be far better if all mankind could agree "to hold their opinions as mere hypotheses." We fully agree with Mr. Fronde in this re gard If most people would keep their "opinions" to themselves the world would be the better for it. Since that lime there have been light showers all the afternoon, but the weather has not grown percep tibly cooler. There was a large party of excursion ists went to Lake Waccamaw on the Sunday School picnic of the First Baptist Church to day. Too Wet. Some ol the farmers in this immedi ate vicinity claim that there has been too much rain lately for the growing crops. They say that, in consequence of the cold and backward Spring, when warm weather did come the corn grew with amazing rapidity and that the heavy rains have caused it to tassel so early that the corn will be very small. We hope, however, that these fears may prove unfounded and that the far mers may reap a rich return in the har vest for their toil and care in preparing and attending to the crops. Sailor lrovvnecl. A sailor by the name of Ole Sorensen, belonging to the Nor wegian barque Insula Capri, Cap tain Danielsen, now lying at Sprunt's wharf, was drowned this morning under the following circumstance : He had been at work in one of the ves sel's boats, and had started to get upon the wharf to go on board the barque for bis breakfast, when a plank gave way from under him and he was pre cipitated into the water. He sunk im mediately and did not rise again until his body was recovered about half an hour afterwards, when life was found to be extinct. He was about 25 years of age, was unmarried and had the credit of being an excellent sailor. We noticed quite a fine display of dog collars at Jacobi's Hardware De pot. Cape Fear Academy. For the past week the pupils of the Cape Fear Academy have been closely engaged in their examination. This morning was spent in very pleasant closing exercises consisting of elocutionary drill in prose and poetry ; after which the principal, Capt. W a&h ington Catlelt, delivered a practical and stirring address to the pupils, and announced the result of the examina tion. Then came the awarding of Certificates of Distinction to those who bad proven themselves proOcien in their various examinations. The following is a list ot the young gentlemen who have distinguished themselves in the various branches, the excellence in class being in order of their names: SENIOR CLASS. VV. Harriss Northrop, H. Editk Review: As the Oxford Base Ball Club will rlay in Wilming ton on the 26th and 27th insts.,$Idesire to bring to your notice an article in the News and Observer, of Raleigh, of the 20ih inst , relative to the game played on the 10th between Raleigh ana Ox lord. The article is headed "Baseball. The Oxford Club Defeats that of Ral eigh." Tlr's was the first day's play ing. The News and Observer surely must have had his eyes shut, or he could not have failed to see. that by the score ot that game, it proved to have been one of the very best that has been played during this base ball season. A score of 7 to 6 with 4 earned runs on each side, with only 6 errors for Raleigh, and 5 for Oxford, and only one passed ball to each side, is very conclusive evidence ot a hotly contested game. No one can dany the fact that Oxford has beaten Raleigh on her own field, yet the News and Ob server is unwilling to accord the victory where it belongs,. The charge against Ryan is unjust in the extreme, in say ing, he i.-charged in the third inning with contributing to the defeat '" There is no foundation whatever for such an assertion, and the News and Observer cannot substantiate this from the score. Let the News and Observer be magnanimous, and not de tract from Oxford simply because they were playing against Raleigh. Other people know something about baseball playing, and from their own record of ihe game, Oxford beat Raleigh a fair and Lotly contested game, and why not in all fairness and frankness say so? However much the News arid Observer may dislike to have it said that the Raleigh club was fairly beaten, it is true, nevertheless. T. Masonboro, N. C. Juno, 23, lbS5.
