Senator Kdrannds new house on Massachusetts avenue. Washineton. is to be wholly above ground. The first story contains little except the stairway, hall, kitchen and household oQices. The entrance from the street is through a low, round, central arch. There is a magnificent double bay window in the southwest corner, running up through two stories. The Senator paid $2 a foot for the land, which he bought from Mr. Frelinehuysen, who had paid only $1 50 for it a few weeks before. In the United States some 150.000 miles of railroad track are now laid' and this rest on 3,6.000,000 ties, the product of 3,960,000 acres, an area larger than the States of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Thirty years are required to grow trte3 of suitable nze, and the average life of a tie is seveu years ; therefore 16.971, 420 acres of grow ing forest are needed to supply the an nual demands of tbe roads that now exist. This forest area is larger than New Hampshire, Vermont and Massa cbusetts Did you ever see a toad catch a fly ? There is nothing neater or more dex terous in the art off legerdemain. His toadship sits apparently asleep, but looking carefully from under his drawn down eyelids, until his prey alights within reaching distance Then his red tongue is darted out like a flash and the fly is captured. The toad never misses his aim. lie is an invaluable insect exterminator, tho friend and helpmate of the gardener. It is now found that tho toad is as useful in tbe kitchen as in the garden. He will ex terminate roaches, and, it he is treated with a proper degree of consideration, makes no objection to living in the house. Now is the season for painting your houses. Warren brought to our office to-day a peach which was grown on a tree only two years old in the garden of Miss Kate Stewart at Smithville. The fruit was remarkably fair and rich in color and very luscious to the taste. Don't forget the entertainment at the Opera House to-night. It will ba an enjoy a de affair, and the price of ad mission is very small. There ought to be a crowded house and we hope that it will be filled to overflowing. The excursion to Lake Waocamaw yesterday was a very pleasant affair. There was a slight sprinkle of rain, but not enough to mar Jthe pleasures of the day. It was in all respects a pro nounced success and the excursionists returned safe and sound in due season. To-day is known in the calendar as St. John, the Baptist's Day. In many places it is celebrated by the Masonic fraternity, but here it is sot, as the masons of this city bave a custom of celebrating St. John tbe Evangelist's Day, which occurs on the 19th of December. The excursion party gotten up by the Hornet Fire Company, of Charlotte, will leave that city to-night and arrive here to-morrow morning, instead of this morning, as we were led to infer from a statement in the Charlotte Ob server. There will be a large party, as we learn that a good many tickets have already been sold. Indications For the South Atlantic States, lair weather, winds generally Easterly with stationary temperature. Postponed. The moonlight excursion oo tbe Pass port, which was to have been made last night, has been postponed uutil next Tuesday, when it will certainly take place if it don't rain. Call at Jacobi's Hardware Depot and examine bis fine assortment of fishiog poles and lines. t The Acme. Mr. J. G. L. Geischen has had his store on the Northeast, corner of Front and Dock streets, entirely remodelled, repainted and refurnished so that it is now a first clas3 saloon in every res pect. It w as opened to the public to day for the first time, and a free lunch was served to ail of those who called. Fair Weather. Notwithstanding the unfavorable ap pearance of the weather thi3 morning, there was a large party went down the river with the German family excur sion on the Passport. The day has proved pleasant with just enough of cloudiness to keep off the scorching ray3 of the sun. and we trust that the excursionists have had a good time. To-morrow's Kxeursion. This is the season of excursion parties and Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1. uot to b3 behind their fellows, will mako an excursion to Smithville and the Forts oa the Passport to-morrow. They have made every arrangement for the comfort and pleasure ot the ex cursionists and a first rate time may be expected. A go id dinner and other re freshments, vvtiich will be under the supervision of a committer ot ladies ap pointed for the purpose, will be seived to ail who may desire at reasonable prices. Wc bespeak for the manage ment a large and select party. Personal Col. L. A. Powell, of Sampson coun ty, is in the city to day. Dr. B. F. Arrington, of Goldsboro, arrived in the city last night and regis tered at the Purcell House. The wife and family of Mr. C. W. Yates are rusticating at Lake Wacca maw. and he is now a bachelor "all forlorn." Too Late. The labors of taking the tax lists closed at 6 o'clock last night, and those who are now delinquents, of whom there are about 300, will have to pay a double tax for their neglect. For this extra expense the delinquents can just ly blame none but themselves, as am ple information has been given of tbe matter, both through official advertise ments and by the local columns of the press. City Court. Rena Pearsall, colored, was brought before the Mayor this morning charged with disorderly conduct last night on Front street a short distanco South of the Market. It seems that she and the girl known as "Long Nine," had a dis pute and Rena began to shout murder when officer Latham arrested her and locked her up. She was required to pay a fine of $20 or go below for 30 days She went below. Literary. The ylr Amateur tor July contains designs for two panels (bird, fruit and flowers), a dessert plate (roses) and a plaque (geraniums), besides several for embroidery and repousse wOrk. There is an interesting notice of the Paris Salon with illustrations, and a timely article on Da Neuviile, a French mili tary painter, who recently died. Other articles of interest are those on "Mont St. Michel," "Art Life in Rome," "The Hotel Drouot," "Japanese Swords" and "Oriental Musical Instruments." Wall and csiling decoration, amateur photography, scene painting and frame embroidery are topics receiving atten tion. Price 35 cents. Montague Marks, Publisher. 23 Union Square, New York. Base Ball. Sold wholesale and retail at the factory agency, Jacobi's Hardware Depot t Lightning's Freaks. During the shower yesterday after noon the lightning descended the chim ney of a house on Front street, between Queen . and Wooster. occupied by a colored woman came i Patience Mer rick, and smashed her stove to pieces tore up the zinc on tbe floor under the stove and killed a dog wh:ch was lying under the house. Fortunately no iciury was sustained by any ot the occupants of the house. Sudden Ieath. Fannie Williams, the cook at the High School of Messrs. W. M. & D S. Kennedy, at Warsaw, Duplin county, dropped dead in the t ook room at about 10 o'clock yesterday morning. She was a faithful servant and was much loved by the young ladies of the tcbool for her motherly conduct towards them. Dr. Kennedy was present and did all in his power to revive her, but she only breathed twice after she fell. She died of apoplexy. She was a true Christian and has doubtless gone to rest. Runaway Accident. At about 1 o'clock this afternoon as the grocery wagon ot Mr. J. C. Steven son, driven by Frank Perry, colored, was proceeding up North Water street between Market and Princess, and when uearly opposite the store of Messrs. B. F, Mitchell &Son, it came in contact with a dray which was being driven in an opposite direction. In trying to get clear the horse driven by Perry became frightened and ran away smashing the wagon badly, besides bruising severely both the horse and the.driver Last Night's Concert. On account ot the storm yesterday afternoon and tbe threatening aspect of the weather last night there was u t so large an attendance at the Soiree Concert giyen under the direction of Prof. E.
