The following is the official report of the judges in the engine contest of yesterday morning: - Steam ek Passport, Wilmington. N. C. July 15. '85. At tbe contest this morn in 2 between the Newbern. Ad rain and Little Giant engines, the first test was as to the first stream of water, through 50 feet ot hose, thrown 50 feet. "This was won by the Newbern Company in 3 minutes 39 seconds, and they are awarded first prize. . The second contest was for farthest stream of water through 500' feet ot hose. A majority of the committer cn contest award this prize to the Newbern Company also. J - A claim was made that the Adrian Company played through 20 Icet more of hose than the Newbern. and that their hose was so laid, or curved, as to prevent their giving tto fnli force from the engine. On tho other hand, a member of the Newbern certifies to the fact that the Adrian's nozzle was fully 10 feet in front of the New bern's. They also claim that they had 5 sections of linen hose 55 feet each in length in their lineot 500 feet, which would' make them play through 515 tcet of hose. Your judges measured 3 sections of the Newborn's linen hoso and found them to be each 53 feet in length. Ciias! D. Myeks, Chief Fire Department, Wilmington. Wm. Ei.lis, Chief Fire Department, Newbern. J. B. Magi r.i., Chief Fire Department, Charlotte. The supper at the City Hall, last night was gotten up by Mr. R. The Hall was beautifully decorated with flags and floral wreaths and the tables, formed in The shape of a cross, were laden with the most temptings viands while cham pagne and other wines sparkled an in vitation for the thirsty to imbibe Capt. C. D. Myers. Chiet of the Wil m 'melon Fire Department, presided, and the duty devolved upon him of presenting the prizes to the victors in the morning's contest, which be did in graceful and appropriate language. Several toasts were drunk and ap propriately responded to, Mr. S. B. Watters, assistant Foreman of the Newbern company, Mr. II . G. Mc Queen, Capt. Edgar Parmelee, of W. S. F. E. Co., No. 1, Col. Roger Moore and Capt. John 11. Daniel, ot Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, being the principal speakers. Capt, Wm. Ellis.Chief of the Newbern Fire Department, spoke as follows: Gentlemen: In bebalt of the New bern Company I extend to you their sincere thanks for your hearty welcome. May the tie which cements us togeth er in a common brotherhood, and which has been tried by fire and stood the test, be greatly strenghened by di rect personal intercourse, and a more intimate personal association. May Wilmington, renowned for her wealth, her enterprise, her intellect, 1 and Newbern. the old City of Elms, the home of Gaston and Stanly, go on ward arm in arm, in the race for every material improvement, and in the achievement of ronewned victories. And while it is our common object to quench the devouring flame, a com mon enemy, let it be our present pur pose, by a well seasoned, rational inter change of courtesies and sentiments, to add more fuel to the flame which should bnrn brightly in the breasts ot all pa triotic citizens Standing to-day. gentlemen, on the banks of the noble Cape Fear, its many, many, hallowed reminiscences, which inspire alike the patriotic pride of Wilmington and Newbern, recalls to us all the brilliant history of the Neuse and reminds us all to revere tbe mem ory, and emulate the example, of an illustrious ancestry, who were ever ready to sacrifice life and property in the establishment as well as tbe main tenance of constitutional liberty. Again, I extend, to you our sincere thanks. Howard Relief, Steam Fire Engine Co. Nch 1, was not represented at the banquet, neither by its oflicers or men. but they sent a protest to the decision of the committee in regard to the awarding of the second prize, although it was not read publicly. This morning, when the hour arrived tor leaving, the Newbera visitors were escorted to the depot by the Little Giant S. F. E. Co. No. 1 and nook & Ladder Co. No. 1, the music being iurnished by the Cornet Concert Club. The New berriians were soon on board the Northern bound train and on their homeward journey, bearing with them the be3t wishes and sincere respect ot our citizens. During their brief stay in oar midst they have borne themsel ves with decorum, and in all" the hilar ity and convivaiity incident to their visit here we have not heard of a single instance where-they forgot r that they were gentlemen and representatives of the people ot a sister city. They ex pressed themselves as delighted with the cordial reception that had been ac corded them and at the open hearted hospitality with which .they had in every instance been received. 1 The Ouardsman for July is oa our table.
